A family member felt bad for how messy my room was and how I never really had time to clean it so she cleaned it for me. I’ve kept my room clean, like no rubbish or clothes on the floor for a week now! I know I shouldn’t be proud, it’s the bare minimum, but I struggle to take care of myself so this is a huge win for me. Creating new habits for a better life.

Kudos to everyone who has gone through this and gotten themselves out of it. Even if it takes multiple tries and it becomes repetitive keep going! Disclaimer/Edit: I understand the underlying issues behind hoarding! This comment isn't to criticise hoarders and try to one up them. So there are different stages, you could just have clutter and not a hoard. I think there are certain criteria having to do with how full the space is and how well you can use it for what it’s meant for. I think trash is part of defining it, but I’m not sure and haven’t looked it up in awhile. It’s good that you’re able to get the trash out! You’re saving yourself from a lot of health hazards in that regard :)

my mother is a horder of old books and i have 6 siblings, so imagine the years of studyings, times 6 and multiple subjects per year... Then, add in old clothing my mom doesnt wanna throw away and says keep for her grandkids and the fact we used to travel alot, so souveniers are piling... All of that... And to be completely honest, hoarders have a hard time throwing away things. Thus, they make it more clean by setting them nicely in containers (boxes) and moving them to a courner of the house (eg; attic or storeroom) and leave it tere to collect dust. This is genuinely what most hoarders I know do and while mysiblings and I try to throw away whatever we can or donate the extra, it still is a mess. Atleast its not messy and filled with trash

Im a bit of a clean freak, but had it extra rough for a couple of months and my house really started to look like a hoarders house, had to step over things to get anywhere. And severe depression too. That sht creeps up fast... Took me letting support workers help me clean my house and hauling a** for a whole week and lots of full trash bags out to make it normal again. And threw out expired cupboard food from 2017+!! Phew. Makes me easier understand how it gets like that, let alone years without help/support. :/ Lesson: If you need help, get it. Done be shy and try to keep people from seeing you being weak or untidy. Dont let untidyness pile up, your floor becoming a narrow walkway or having to step over things is the point where you definitly need to get help and/or have a big clean! * strong garbage bags and moving boxessss. * scrubdaddy and warm soapy watererrrr.

I'd always known that my Aunt and Uncle were hoarders. I had a couple encounters that were just a dead giveaway. Several years ago, when I was in college, I was making a few extra bucks helping them with outdoor work. I was using an electric hedger and accidentally cut through the extension cord. I said "sorry... i'll trash this" The reply: "No, that's okay I'll find a use for it" When they either move into an assisted living home or pass away from old age, and we have to throw most of the stuff in the house in a dumpster - I fully expect to find two sides of an extension cord that are still separated, and in no way usable. We've tried helping them downsize, but it's no use. It only makes room for more shit to get packed in. I guarantee there's parts of that house that haven't been seen or set foot in in years because you simply cannot access them.

@@NotOnDrugs Many people who hoard have mental illness, and it's a big step for them to both admit they have a problem and ask for outside help. Many clients in Aurikatariina's videos suffered from some sort of debilitating injury or personal loss that led to severe depression, and cleaning just wasn't a priority for someone in that state. Once they started to receive treatment and their life circumstances improved, they realized how much their unhealthy environment also made their mental health suffer. It is very hard to be kind to those to create their own terrible states sometimes, but everyone is going through something. Nobody who is doing fantastic wants a space like the one in this video. There is almost always some deeper issue at play.

@@NotOnDrugs I'm very sorry to hear that. The videos I'm talking about are usually not lifelong situations or ones like this, where some feels a compulsive need to buy a lot of things and hoard them. The situations I'm discussing are ones with clear indicators of mental distress with a clear starting point, where people are going through far bigger and overwhelming problems than cleaning their room, as silly as that may seem to someone who has good coping skills. Again, it is sometimes difficult to empathize with someone who created their own distressing situation, but it should be recognized that these people, both in this video and those featured on Aurikatariina's channel realized they had issues and couldn't tackle them alone. It can be very frightening for someone with a stigmatized issue to seek help even when they're ready to accept it, and I commend the clients in Aurikatariina's videos for doing so.

I cleaned a hoarders house before with one other person. Garbage is the easiest shit to clean. Pet damage is another story… We cleaned a small room that was used by several cats for a decade as a litter box. The entire room. The biggest thing that surprised me was how many garbage bags you need to fill to get rid of everything. I lost track at 200 or so. Dumpster wasn’t an option due to street restrictions. The memory of it clean afterwards was a feeling I’ll never forget. Also my uncle’s house, which had floor to ceiling containers in his bedroom with my deceased aunt’s clothing. After we removed everything, he was surprised that a window existed in the room. Help a hoarder if you can. The pushback will be fierce but be kind and persistent and they’ll be so happy when it’s done.

Lol my boyfriend tries to save EVERY paper bag and cardboard box! He's got so much stuff, it's crazy to me. I'm a minimalist, mostly due to my lifestyle. I have my makeup, my clothes, and my laptop pretty much. Those are the only things I really need. When I first moved into his apartment, I cleaned his whole kitchen for him. Had to throw away a whole bag of silverware that was in the sink hah. Unfortunately, he still has a lot of stuff, but it's not useless stuff either. He has a ton of tools, accessories for different devices and whatever other guy stuff he has. Problem is, we are building a TINY house right now, and I have no clue if he can truly part ways with a lot of it. He's not a certifiable hoarder, but he lets certain things pile up to the point it takes away from the serenity of the room, and he buys a lot of stuff. Our house is _really_ tiny, too lol. the trash is the kicker. cleaning gurus will tell you the first step you can do when overwhelmed that will make any room look 80% cleaner is to take the trash out of it. it's the least difficult step, one of the least boring, and yet you can wind up in such a situation mentally that even that is too taxing for a while. getting rid of the shame is a big first step. the world is actually pretty damn hard despite what your parents might have told you. it may very well be because you were hearing 'clean your room' while you were struggling with other major anxieties that is the same reason you actually feel more relief from NOT cleaning now. but it only works short term, and you might have figured that out. don't feel ashamed, but if you're miserable and tired of it, find someone you trust and confide in them, or tell someone on the internet, and think about something small you could do ASAP to make it better. here's a guide for quickly doing the bare minimum on any room. try doing 5-10 mins on just step 1: 1. get rid of all the obvious trash 2. collect laundry or dishes and put where they belong (don't do them) 3. starting with the largest flat surface, clear it off and wipe/dust/clean if needed -- put those items away 4. repeat on all flat surfaces 5. pick up everything off the floor 6. now put the items from #5 away you can dust and vacuum if you wanna be fancy about it. the key is that the largest amount of difference is made with the earliest, simplest steps. gl

That's not a hoarder though, a hoarder is someone who doesn't want to throw stuff away and items just collect in their houses until there is just too much. Dead animals and garbage isn't a hoarder, that's just lazy, most real hoarders houses are clean, just cluttered.
@Creepley

Please note: Hoarding is a serious mental illness and ties in with OCD. If you want to know what it's like, imagine every item, be it a piece of trash, an empty box or anything else, has the same sentimental value as a beloved childhood toy or maybe even a pet. Some hoarders feel a need to collect more stuff, while others just have trouble throwing things out. The reason people let it get bad isn't because they're lazy or stupid, it's because throwing things out causes real emotional distress.

My sister did this for me for my birthday, I've been rough this year - people say you can't buy happiness and they're right, I work sporadically - ie when I want to because I work pretty much for the social/enjoyment/structural aspects of having a job, I don't need the money and won't ever. I volenteer for kids cancer charities and stuff since I can afford to be unpaid. But when I'm doing nothing I sorta fall apart. I made sure I got stuck in with cleaning my apartment with my sister (took us 7 hours) and honestly, I've been far better since and it was probs the best bday present of all time. It was less laziness, clearly, because I wouldn't have been up for it let alone helping PROPERLY when it was suggested, but sometimes you just stop giving a shit. You can now cross my room easily and my drum kit doesn't requiring folding (it's electric) to actually get into my room anymore, since we also restructured the layout.
