You'll notice that most of the stories in which these crashes took place were originally written by Wilbert Awdry himself. Being a railway enthusiast, he had most of the events in his stories based on real events that happened on real railways.

I love how many accidents were based on real events
3:15 - This was really inspired by an incident in which GWR 4800/1400 class engine No. 4866 (akin to Oliver, later re-numbered 1466) was in the station throat at Newton Abbot, Devon in 1939. The signal man was unaware of the engine's position and an express train was fast approaching, and narrowly avoided an accident with No. 4866. With this in mind, the driver tried to move the engine, and he and the fireman jumped clear just in time. As a result, No. 4866 ran driver-less for seven miles before it was deliberately de-railed.

It's interesting how several of these real-world railroad incidents were considered basis of Thomas & Friends accident scenes. Fabulous work!

I knew even as a kid watching the old episodes narrated by Ringo Starr that miniature accidents in the TTTE world were actually based on real life train accidents. That one where Gordon angrily steamed off the turntable and down into a river ditch reminds me of a tale my Father always told me that happened in Peterbourgh South Australia where a loco slipped off the turntable up there and actually plowed through the Beer Garden of the Pub opposite. Workers always joked the train wanted a beer before starting work but the actual incident was anything but funny - it was frightening.

You forgot some real life crashes. Donald's signalbox accident was based on an incident that happened in London. The diesel in "Old Stuck-up" who crashed into the back wall of the sheds was based on an accident that happened with an A4 Pacific named Sir Nigel Greslesy. Godred's death was based on a tragic incident that happend in the Snowdon mountain railway with it's No.1 named Ladas.
