The outstanding composer Thomas Adés’ first work for classical guitar.
Guitar interlude from his opera “The Exterminating Angel”
Last spring I had the big privilege to be a part of Thomas Adés’ fantastic opera “The Exterminating Angel” at the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen.
Its a big scale opera with a full symphony orchestra - including the fantastic instrument Ondes Martinot - and a lot of percussion both in the orchestra and off stage. Then in the third act a musical interlude dominated by a solo classical guitar appears.
it begins with nearly a minute of solo guitar, then accompanies a mezzo soprano and at the end of the aria the Ondes Martinot comes in with this deep, spooky bassline from the keyboard.
The composer told me after the last performence, to my great pleasure, that the guitar part also could be played as a solo guitar piece.
It´s one of the most spectacular pieces I have ever played.
