The Polo Scene from The Thomas Crown Affair (1968) is wonderful film making with a great cast - few can match Faye Dunaway and Steve McQueen for 60s cool.
Split screen editing is almost a cliché, the fashion of 60s movie directors looking to be hip. However Norman Jewison (Director) and Hal Ashby (Editor) in this scene from The Thomas Crown Affair (1968) used the method of multiple screens within the widescreen picture to capture the frenetic action on the Polo field. The music by Michel Legrand is also perfectly pitched to help give this scene a sense of movement and place it in the 60s.
Alongside the split screen technique is the wonderful screen presence of both Faye Dunaway and Steve McQueen, they eat up the camera with their beauty and charm. They do not speak in the scene because they do not have to, just a few glances give us a glimpse of what they think of one another and where there relationship is destined to proceed.
The costume and setting is also worth a mention, Faye looks as good as any catwalk model in her costume throughout the movie and perched on the top of a 1960s fire red Ferrari she is exquisite. Steve is just the epitome of cool, and he looks better in his polo shirt in this scene than the stuffy wall street suits he occupies in the rest of the film.
I hope you enjoy the scene and movie.
