Imagine if Henry stopping in the tunnel wasn't an actual fear of the rain, but he was trying to stop the shame of being a poor steamer. The dismissal of his issues by the others most likely made him feel ashamed of his design, and he used the vain facade to cover it up. At least he would be controlling the view of him as a vain engine afraid if spoiling his paint, rather than being teased for faults he couldn't control.

The Thomas engines looking back can really help to teach children many things. Henry's sad theme comes up a few different times for different reasons. First he's being punished for being disobedient to the fat controller by not pulling his train. Then he suffers with an invisible condition making it hard for him to work, while the other engine accuse him of being lazy to get out of work. Then he gets into an accident that wasn't his fault. There's comfort knowing he couldn't have prevented the accident, but the pain and hurt is there all the same, even when you do everything right. There's alot of lessons to learn, about expressing our emotions, and the different sources of pain we can feel, from ourselves and our actions, from our peers, and from the world around us.

Honestly the simple and short Henry theme always has been in my mind since 1st hearing it as a child watching episodes like "Flying Kipper" and "The sad story of henry" on VHS. It's been a favorite of mine from the classic series for years. This extended instrumental cover is probably one of the best I've ever heard in years. I'd be lying if I didn't say I was fighting tears. It made my depressed past flash through my mind all throughout this. Absolutely cracking job and I do look forward to using this in future projects. He reminds me of Smudger from the Duke episodes, despite only appearing in one. It may only be a fan theory but the main reason Smudger didn't function properly was because he was rushed in his building process, and there was either no time or parts to get him built the way he was supposed to. The main difference is while Henry was eventually given a proper smoke box, Smudger was turned into a generator. The two weren't built properly from the start, and it led to problems for both them and their respective railways.

James' comeback only proves Henrys point. No one ever stopped to think that there was something wrong with Henry and just assume he's a lazy bum trying to not do anything for the railway and wants him to exercise. He gets sick once in awhile, he produces less steam, and no one cares. No one even bothered to ask Henry how these things kept happening to him and just beat him with insults. The only engines who did care about and respect Henry was Edward and sometimes Thomas.

I love this expanded arrangement of Henry’s Sad Theme. It’s very good!! I particularly like the harp part (I play harp so it’s cool seeing it there), it adds a new layer to Mike & Junior’s already emotional theme. I forget the term for it, but for a while I’ve noticed the melody in the theme are taken from his regular theme but in a different rhythm, B minor (I think) and slower pace. Anyway, that’s all I have to say for this theme, it’s great as always!

It's actually pretty incredible that people can relate to the character of these steam locomotives somehow someway Young children relate to Thomas when he first arrived on Sodor. The young, cheeky engine that's eager to show what he can do and gets a little mischievous in the process Grandparents can relate to Edward. An engine that's old but has years of experience under his buffers. He gets teased for being old once in a while, but he's proven time and time again that he just keeps going and even shares his wisdom with the other engines Those who are going through a rough time can relate to Henry. Being an engine riddled with problems from the start, having the biggest accident he's had and emerging a better and stronger engine from that experience. These people have experienced the sadness that comes with their experience like Henry has with his steaming problems. These people can look up to Henry can give them the hope that they will one day recover fully and emerge a stronger person It's amazing.....

It might be the melodramatic side of me - which is big, with me being an opera geek AND a singer - but this theme definitely crossed the line with the tragic. The quiet kind of tragic, where one is so desperate that one doesn't even have the strength to utter a word while one's world falls apart. I loved how the cellos set the general atmosphere and functioned as kind of foundation for the piece, and then came the harp weeping the middle layer with her ostinato. And then the double basses with their dark, tragic core of impotence while the poor train got walled in (it that even appropriate for children? It's terrible!). I'd say this enhanced interest in string orchestration has born its fruits. Great job, as usual.

George Carlin: Poor Henry had no steam to answer, his fire had gone out, soot and dirt from the tunnel had spoiled his lovely green paint and red stripes anyway, how long do you think Henry will stay in the tunnel before he overcomes his fear of the rain and decides to journey out again? Ringo Starr: But I think he deserved his punishment, don’t you?

Poor Henry had no steam left to answer, his fire had gone out. Soot and dirt from the tunnel had spoiled his lovely green paint with red stripes. He wondered if he would ever be allowed to pull trains again. But I think he deserved his punishment…don’t you?

Great job with this one! It not only captures the depressing feel, but it also feels cinematic, like if somebody made a movie adapting the books again, this is probably what it would sound like! The Bass Flute even helped too, which now that I think of it, if you did a variation of Harvey or Arthur’s themes, the flute itself would be perfect! Can’t wait too see the next one.

Ahhh thanks Mike! I hope some day we do get an updated adaptation of Awdrys stories with the care & love that Allcroft took in the 80s - 00s. Those are both great themes! Working my way towards the themes of the later seasons so stay tuned :)

InstrumentManiac That wouldn’t be to hard ti wait for, seeing that practically the entire Thomas the Tank Engine community, the ones that make music that is, have done their own variations of these themes.

A really great cover, man. I love your creative additions to this theme. Apologies if this is already been commented, but the melancholic sequence of music before we hear the familiar sound of Henry's theme, reminds me of the music from the sequence of Snape's past in the last Harry Potter film
