Tritium in MSRs:
- Tritium produced from neutron irradiatior of Li, Be, and F, and ternary fission.
- FLiBe (2LiF-BeF2) best for thermal-hydraulic and neutronic properties
- Tritium production rates estimated to be similar to CANDU reactors
- Enrichment in 7Li to limit tritium production (small thermal neutron cross section)
- Natural 6Li (7.5%) to produce tritium (large neutron cross section)
- Needed for 3He, security, and fusion plant start-up inventories
Tritium Release Pathways: Tritium is highly mobile and diffuses throughout system - major issue for safety and licensing.

1. Tritium production (neutrons + Li)
2. Speciation/corrosion (TF vs T2)
3. Graphite interaction
4. Evolution into plenum/off-gas system
5. Diffusion through primary system structural materials
6. Diffusion into secondary coolant
7. Diffusion through secondary system structural materials
8. Release from secondary system plenum/off-gas system
9. Onwards into ternary system
