I like Thomas very much and especially here . He is the BEST Guillaume of all I saw -he united sensivity and sound and created a live and very human image(or character -this may be better to say) The following scene is also superb! Look for the whole perfomance!

Desde que escucho a este hombre me da la ligera impresión que pudiera abordar papaeles de tenor dramático aunque sea barítono, quiza un Otello o los roles de heldentenor de Wagner, no se, quiza. Aqui en este pasaje me gustó mucho.

what you all don't seem to get is that a lot of times, vocal classification is less about range and more about timbre and resonance color. He's not lazy, his voice just isn't the color of a tenor's. And while this is hypocritical, it's really obnoxious when people comment on videos like this and pretend they know what they're talking about.

tenors don't sing baritone roles if they're having a rough day and don't feel like singing high b flats. singers settle into different areas of the voice. Thomas Hampson is without a question a high baritone.

See Sherrill Milnes for someone who is definitively a baritone that also regularly sings high b-flats

The difference between tenor and baritone - or soprano and mezzo - is not how high of a note you can sing. It's more a question of vocal sound and tessitura. I can sing F, G A, B, but not for any length of time. A tenor or soprano role will generally have a lot more singing in that range than will a baritone or mezzo role. Mr. Hampson is most definitely a baritone, one who can sing higher than average, perhaps, but a baritone for sure, and one of my favorites for a long time!

Camp Hill Light Opera Experience - CHLOE In fact this is not a difficult aria for baritone, so this high notes are supposed to be easy to sing. but yes you are correct about vocal ranges and tessitura, for example I am a baritone but I can hit a b flat if is necessary or is written in the score, but I am not a tenor at all, as my singing teacher told me, the opera singers had to have at least two full octaves and a opera star has to be able to sing three octaves with full voice.

I have the record of performance. but I have some difficulties with attempts to make it fit the internet size I'll try to do that scene, but maybe something could be found via Mezzo (French TV)or DVD -it worth it though they cut plenty of chorus music (especially in II act) and sets may be not the best, yet it's a wonderful production first of all because of really good acting (not only Tell and his son - almost everybody in chorus also is living character) and Thomas here is really splendid!

@Vexi56 With humble honesty, dear Vexi56, Thomas Hampson is not at all a tenor. Probably he could do some dramatic tenor roles, but what for? He definitely is one of the finest singers these days, and I bow to his art. So, I think, it'd deem to you too - before calling HIM lazy ;-)

I have Guillaume by Milnes, Pavarotti, Freni. Surely, Milnes' famous "Sogne a ta mere" is incredible. Many tenors fear singing the b flat. It is said he is a dramatic tenor who preferred to major as a baritone.

Wow, Hampson is just incredible at this aria. It really suits him. Do you have the following scene, when Tell shoots the arrow? Because after this utterly incredible aria, I'm desperate to see what follows.

molto bene, mi pare; Hampson migliore qui che in Verdi dove deve forzare un poco la sua bella vocalità, brano ammirevole, cantato molto bene con il giusto pathos mantenendo una linea musicale stilizzata quale si addice a Rossini.

Timurun Fili... common, stop to blaspheme! Thomas Hampson should be consider as a master among (ofcorse other masters! he's not the only one!) , among the baritones... his techinque, his sensibility and musicality... A lot are very good, it's true, and man, Thomas is surely from them... from the bests! (personal taste : for me he's that best!) I'm myself baritone, and he's a real example! It's true althouth that milnes have a real gift for his voice!

@LibbySingsMezzo yeah since Most opera singers have amazing ranges and can hit much lower and much higher notes than they usually sing but they are not comfortable in some ranges and sound much strogner adn much better in their main range. Me for example have very powerful middle-low notes but my upper and lowest doesnt sound as much but i can sing them however im no operasinger ;)

Only 19? Anything can happen. I'm 19 as well. can go to at least a G, if my technique is a little better. But nobody is sure which voicetype I am. Tenor/Baritone.. And which kind of baritone? lyric, martin maybe? My opinion: I don't think it's so black and white... There's ALOT of grey.

A méditer... The great discusses that only the singer (interpret) has the answer and nobody else. Also, whatever his orientation, look at his great career and you will realize that he wasn't completely wrong.
