Around 1989, at my Goodwill, there seemed to be a never-endin' supply of tube clock radios. I bought and repaired a few.

I always loved vintage electronics. Starting at the age of probably 12 or maybe 13. Growing up very poor my brother and I are going around picking old TVs radios and stuff out of the garbage bringing them home taking out the tubes to the drugstore to test them on the machine. We did get lucky with a couple of pieces I got a couple of televisions to work fairly well. Then I started working part-time in a television radio TV and repair shop while I was in high school at the age of 16. There I learned a lot. And my electronics career escalated from there. I do remember every well the first two radio that I got working needing a tube was a philco Transit tone that was pre-war. And that was back in 1971. Now here I am a senior citizen with over 1000 radios and about 300 record players. Just thought I would share my story

I just got one from my local antique store. 20 bucks so i didnt think it was a bad price overall. The only thing is the volume nob is a little wonky. Only certain turns will actually have it audible.

Buy yourself a decent used car stereo from the 80s/90s with the same form factor cassette tape mechanism and then transport it into this machine. You'll have a decent cassette player in it. The form is everything here. It's (Cathedral) a great form factor. So why not make what is in it good? You could even replace the AM/FM tuner. You have the sentimental attachment, why not make it better than your memories.

There was one at our vendor mall going for $29 labeled 'vintage cathedral radio' i ended up buying the 5-tube GE next to it that was priced for $9. Its my work radio and even at half volume you can hear its tiny single speaker 50ft away. Its also the only one that can pick up our local rock station. None of the modern ones can.

I have my Dad's Philco from 1972. We listened to it for hours on FM. He grew up in the 30's and 40's. It's a replica of a Cathedral Radio. It's not bad. The tuner slips. I just don't want to take it apart unless I have to. That one you have there is ok. Thanks for another video!!

I remember getting a little cassette tape recorder for Christmas one year, and being disappointed because it seemed so random and I had no idea what I was going to do with it. After goofing around recording myself and my siblings, I finally discovered the "killer app" for that machine, which was recording music off the radio. Boy, did I use the helloutta that machine until it wouldn't work any more! I still have all the cassettes I recorded, which are, of course very low quality (we're talking late 1960s early 1970s AM radio in Los Angeles: 93 KHJ with The Real Don Steele and Boss Weekend!), but I'm in the process of digitizing and cataloging them because I played some songs so much, I remember every glitch, the DJ chatter, and even the spots where the tape was "eaten" and repaired with Scotch tape. All that was part of the sound track of my childhood!

Still have the tape player but not the mount for it.

I too was a “tube-a-haulic “ and can relate to your story. Thank you for sharing your childhood experience. In my youth,1970’s, I felt like that kid in that Christmas movie who wanted that BB gun but in my case, I wanted anything with tubes. Now I own two sets with tubes, both in storage and one transformer pocket radio from 1962 in its mint case. It takes some weird shorter battery that’s “un obtainium”. That’s shoved in my closet somewhere too. My health is failing real fast so nowadays I watch you and Shango066 on yuck tube. I keep a close watch for your videos and really enjoy them very much.

Is that an old RCA record player sitting on top of that blanket? I found an old cathedral Philco radio on top of a trash can one day back when I was in my early 20's (many decades ago!) and took it home. The speaker was totally shot but I managed to get the radio to work by mounting a new 8" speaker in it and using the voice coil of the old speaker to drive it. The radio had pretty good sound and would pull in quite a few stations. When my foster parents divorced my radio got sh--canned by him and no reason given for it. I wish I could have gotten to it before that happened but I was overseas and that ended that.

My parents were great. I couldn't have asked for more support. I wish I knew what I know now about capacitor failure modes and different test procedures. Funny how they all swing the ohmmeter on high scale.... I have one with the phono on the top. Absolutely no luck selling it. It's great to audit unknown records and such. My mom's friend gave it to me and he's gone quite awhile now. I'm going to put a Bluetooth module in it and just keep it. It's not too bad and has a small personal connection. Tape player has allot of flutter, but everything absolutely works. Maybe I can make it better. When I was a kid I hated all of the compact stereos. Now I appreciate that all things are made to fulfill a purpose. And some items do really well and would be considered a good value. I appreciate these design considerations much more as an adult.

I won a Grundig 960 reproduction radio in a contest from a radio store in the late 90s. At the time I wasn't too thrilled about it and asked if I could trade it for something else. They told me either take it or leave it so I said OK and they shipped it to me. It had problems with distortion and when I opened it up to look at it someone before I got it had tried to fix it. Probably the radio store couldn't fix it so they got rid of it as a contest prize. I was able to fix it temporarily and gave it to my brother who left it behind when he moved out of his apartment.

i have a 'similar but different' steepletone branded one, model nr301c, also with cassette player (was available without) and has a '1929' badge on it 😁 , i had it about 1989/1990 (as a christmas present), it worked ok for what it is, although the tape part was bit of a chewer, take up tension far too high, it has now failed, the TA7640 IF chip has popped , i've had quite a few Tosh chips like this go bad...so modern technology isnt as good as many think 😜 i have a 1932 pye battery set, i just shoved 90v and 2v in it and it worked pretty good as is , all 'virgin' unrecapped .... i do have a 'thomas' branded plastic cased 'retro repro' thing also with cassette, i've seen pics of the original it was based on but cant remember offhand what it was , its left side rounded with louvres, white pushbuttons down right side, 2 main controls under right side dial ...

there were repros of the philips 'ovaltiney' 634A , made about the same time, plus earlier ones 70s/80s, made by philips themselves, which are very acceptable, i have one, 2 variants of those, one with innards from one of their far eastern made pocket radios(all discrete, no ICs), adapted for it, i have on of those, plus one with 'unique' innards not used in anything else, that uses at least one IC
@andygozzo72

these far eastern repros could now be classes as 'vintage' if at least 20 years old, and you never know, may become collectable or even 'rare' in the future ... need to stock up on TA7640 IF chips as i think most used these, they were probably 'old' types at the time they were made so maybe got a batch cheap from Toshiba or a surplus wholesaler , theres a newer KA equivalent commonly available luckily

Very soon FM will go down to 82.1 MHz 82.1 -91.9 will be low power translators, part 15 transmitters, non commercial religious stations such as K-Love, school & college stations. 92.1 -107.9 will be high powered commercial stations still. No dates set yet but i would imagine they will go down further to 76 MHz like Brazil (76-108 MHz) & Japan (76-96 MHz) uses.

I made new rubber drive tires out of a rubber equipment foot of about the right diameter you have to drill the hole out and stick a bolt through the hole and chuck it in a drill and shape the edge that goes into the dial drum with a slight chamfer to fit, you'll probably have to work it and try it a few times till it fits right but it is do able, on mine the rubber was lumpy and distorted/cracking.

Take the speaker out, the board it's mounted on has a column almost covering the speaker up. Cut it out and make the opening a proper circle, put it all back together and the fidelity and volume will be greatly improved. Big time.
