My dad took me, and my best girlfriends, to see the Thompson Twins on this tour. I was 15, in junior high, and my friends’ and my parents took turns driving and chaperoning us, and it was our turn. Dad was and is an old school rock and blues fan, and I didn’t know if he would like them or not; in fact, I was almost certain he wouldn’t like them. I was totally wrong. We had a blast (total 80s lingo there). The whole arena was on its feet the whole time. We danced our asses off, and my dad still talks about that show. You can see how infectious their energy was. It’s still fun to watch them after all these years.

There was so much great music coming out of Britain in the 80s. The best way I can explain it is the Thompson Twins. They wrote quality pop tunes that ordinarily would have made them the biggest band in the World at the time, but they weren't the most successful commercially simply because of the competition. Smart, well written, excellently produced pop that is woefully not as respected as it should be.

Going by other interviews I've seen, they just weren't really into being pop/rock stars and they were bored by it all. One would have thought the reaction they got from live audiences and fans outside whilst on tour etc, would have made up for all the bad interviews etc. Seems not, plus I've heard them say that they didn't want to end up a boring old rock band on stage. I doubt that would have happened with all the material they have that most people hadn't heard. Strange how back in the '80s some media thought so literally and wondered why on earth they were called The Thompson Twins, when there were three of them and none of them were related. They didn't get the irony of it all and made a big deal of it at the time.

They used a lot of synth bass on the albums. I'm pretty sure they used an Oberheim on Hold Me Now, at least that's what I've heard.
@GroovyDoom
5 жыл бұрын
The Oberheim was used for all the bass parts on "Quick Step and Side Kick" and "Into the Gap". Tom Bailey mentioned this in an issue of "Keyboard" magazine, that other musicians and producers would ask him who played bass on the albums because they wanted to hire them. TT did use a live bassist for the tours, here it's Mark Heyward Chaplin, who played bass for Lene Lovich, Kim Wilde and Thomas Dolby.

When I saw them in 1987 it was Alannah's bracelet getting too close to the microphone that kept causing feedback. I was on the front row so she winked at me when our eyes locked and we both realized her bracelet was the culprit.
