Honestly, just read the Jason Aaron run. The God Butcher Saga is a 10/10, and while the rest of the run is not fully consistent in quality, when it hits, it really hits good. Also I’ve always hated the idea of making Thor, Odin, and Loki basically just powerful aliens worshipped as gods. It took away the air of magic and mysticism these characters had that made them stand out from the rest. But boy I hate how it’s implemented here in the movie.

I disagree about Gorr origin being cause by just the death his daughter. The whole opening let clear that Gorr's people are dead, that his daughter is all he has left and, despite all that, he keeps praying for gods, asking for help (which I pretty sure might not be the first time he does this) and how things ended? With his daughter dying and Gorr discovering that the god who he put all his faith in it is a jerk who doesn't care for him or his people despite all the devotion. His rage was all in him and the necroblade just brought up to the surface. It's basically a drug that is pushing him even futher into this abyss, blinding him to his true desire and connection with people he cares about (his daughter) This motivations fits with theme present not only in this movie but in most of Thor films (except DW): To not judge book by it's cover nor to put people in unrealistic pedestal, otherwise it might result in huge disappoiment depending on the level person expectations. The best exemple is Ragnarok where Thor learns about Hela and Odin past, that his father who always look up was not this noble king he always belived to be, but a tyrant who ensalve many realms to created Asgard. In this film this is reflect both in Gorr origin as well Thor meeting with Zeus. Much like the villain, Thor sees that Zeus and I guess all this gods are just arrogant jerks (showing that Gorr has point) but he doesn't waste time seeking revenge. He takes Zeus lightning bolt and move on to save asgardian kids and stop Gorr, showing the difference between the hero and the villain
@noahc9090
2 жыл бұрын
But did they state all those reasons in the movie?
@d_fendr6222
2 жыл бұрын
It never was theme to not judge a book by its cover in the Thor films. Odin being revealed as a tyrant wasn't a part of any theme, it was just lore to explain why Hela is evil. And if Gorr being corrupted by the Necro Sword is supposed to show this theme, then the film doesn't do a good job with presenting it. There's no conflict in him between his corrupted urges and his wants until the tail end- that would've brought such a theme to light if it was better presented. Also Thor did take revenge by throwing the lightning bolt into Zeus, presumably killing him.
@alexandrefrauches132
2 жыл бұрын
@@d_fendr6222 It wasn't just explanation for Hela origin. The revelation of Odin past play role in Thor arc in Ragnarok, which involves him not only dealing with loss of his father, his hammer and his freedom, but also the grief caused by Odin death combine with the fact he discover that his father wasn't the big hero he always belived. The fact that in the end Thor defeats Hela by allowing Ragnarok from happening symbolizing Thor choosing to let this kingdom made of sins burn to the ground and save the people who will give Asgard a new bright future. As I said, the Necrosword didn't made Gorr, it just feed the evil that was already in him: His rage against the gods for their arrogance and for allowing his people and his daughter to die, which is why, even after Thor and Jane broke the sword he still goes after Eternity. It's Thor and Jane's words that make him realize his true desire was to bring his daughter back (a event he kept bring in durign the film) rather than revenge against the gods. Speaking on revenge, while I agree that Thor tried to kill Zeus, my point is that he still went after Gorr and tried to stop his plan, despite seeing how Zeus and the other gods were the selfish arrogant pricks Gorr said they were
@nutellaninja4667
2 жыл бұрын
It was so rushed though. I know the adaptation doesn't have to be 1:1, but the comic was far more well-done in showing Gorr's descent. The movie went from his daughter's death to finding the oasis in like 10 seconds. I also think that the god being a jerk kind of took away from Gorr's origin in a way. Considering that the god nearly killed him in an act of petty cruelty, Gorr was totally justified in decapitating him. In the comics, Gorr's fury came from discovering that gods simply *existed.* Worship of them leaves his people and family in an endless clinging to hope that will never be fulfilled by beings who have the power to save them and yet sit idly by, which Gorr saw as a display of infinite cruelty and wickedness. He didn't change over one event; it was a buildup of the loss of his wife, his children, being exiled from his community as a blasphemer, and then discovering that gods existed all along. His feelings were understandable, but the existence of someone like Thor proves that not everyone will take the faith put in them for granted. Thor meeting Zeus and finding out he was a douchebag was alright, but it was severely undercut by Thor flinging his lightning bolt right through Zeus' chest. Zeus may have survived, but Thor had presumably just killed him.

To adress certain things you said. 1.Valhalla. In the comics it is established that people who die as warriors in battle go to Valhalla. and people who dont they go to Hela's realm aka hell for the gods. That being said they never established Valhalla or Hela's realm in the mcu. Sure Hela was the big bad in Ragnarok and for plot reasons Thor's sister. But they never had a scene of her realm overseeing 100 to 10000 domed souls aka introducing hell for the gods in MCU. 2.Jane getting sicker is from Jason Aarons run in the comics where the more she use it the faster she is going to die in her human form. But that not necerely means if other people use the hammer that they will get sicker. So that is more a nitpick than a problem in your review. That being said i don't plan to see Love & Thunder, was not a fan of his take on Thor in Ragnarok, and you just listed all the reasons(most of them) why i dont want to see it.

The status quo of the MCU so far is introducing new characters to take the mantles of their counterparts. So the fact that they brought Jane back just to kill her off was a waste. ie: she hulk, Natasha’s sister, the girl archer, and now Jane. I know they’re all women and I have nothing against that. Jane was always on Thor's mind, just that epic events preoccupied him until it's too late. Thor was an emotional wreck throughout Endgame. Even towards the end, he NEVER recovered even though he picked himself up a bit while with the Guardians but deep down he's still a wreck. But now he has a daughter, he's going to be a father figure. There is character development, just not as epic as viewers would like. But who ever says life's fair? Destiny works differently for everybody.

She is laying playing dead, she doesn't understand how Valhalla works, her injury is casually dismissed, then they establish she would have to die in battle to go to Valhalla and not after the battle is over...but it's a bullshit throwaway line that doesn't even matter because the movie goes against its own rules. The movie really couldn't figure out how to match tone and themes. The themes are coping with death/loss, finding value in yourself, the death of faith, valuing life over pursuing vengeance...but the movie seems scared to take any of it seriously.

Eh, I feel like I saw a different movie, I really loved it. I liked the comedy, I don't feel like it really detracted from or degraded the characters. Korg telling the sad bits of the story in a comedic way was fine for me, because it's been years and years for them since it happened and you do find the humor in those things. Plus it's Korg, not Thor, it's not like he had any connection to those characters I feel like Thor was actually shown to be quite competent. He instantly recognized the necrosword and shadowrealm, piecing things together very quickly. He knew he couldn't just rush in to fight Gorr on home turf, because he's smarter than that. He helped Heimdall's kid use his powers, he fought just as well as Jane or Valkyrie, he didn't want to bum rush Zeus and just take the Thunderbolt. He wasn't a complete bumbling idiot like some people like to think. Most of the times he does something silly, like use the bifrost indoors, is when he is around Jane, which makes sense to me. He's overcompensating to try and impress her, especially since she is now also Thor. His regression at the beginning of the movie makes sense because yes, he has moved a bit backwards from where he was. He's lost

Korg is one of the best examples of a directors out of control ego. Taika wacktiti voices him so he must be the center of attention at all times. Marvel needs to let him go or reign him in a lot. And yeah, I thought it was probably gonna be lame having Jane be lady Thor but she was easily one of the best parts of the film. And now he's regressed into the God of Hammers again with Mjolnir despite, in the context of the MCU, having upgraded to what Eitri called 'The King's Weapon' and for a 2nd movie ends just fucking around, first with the Guardians and now with...Gorr's daughter of all random people? Absolutely horrific movie. The worst in the MCU by a mile stretch. The fact that people are angrily defending this crap by insulting people is a joke. Thor has been truly character assassinated and his arc driven straight into the ground. He is now a one note, bumbling, stuttering, walking, talking catastrophe, the biggest case of flanderisation the MCU has ever seen, a God who acts like he has brain damage compared to when we last saw him. They just refuse to make him King unlike in the current comics in favour 'King Valkryie', they've now turned him back into the God of Hammers and he's now in permanent character development limbo where, instead of a proper, respectful arc resolution like Steve or Tony, he ends another movie just pissing around rather than taking up the mantle. First with the Guardians now with Gorr's daughter of all people in the most random move ever? Just pointlessly ending the movie doing absolutely nothing of note but raising a kid he doesn't know and fighting unnamed CGI bad guys? Waititi went full lazy hack on this one, copied what everyone liked and disliked with Ragnarok, rehashed it, copy and pasted it into this movie and then turned the goofy, kiddy humour up to 11 and made a sloppy, tonal mess. The worst MCU movie by a mile stretch and a sign this franchise, creatively, is on it's knees. I'd rather see Thor killed off than character assassinated and humiliated like this. 0/10, dreadful movie. Thank you very much for warning more and more people so these hacks are rewarded with as little money as possible. Money speaks. Taika 'I'll ruin your mythos in a minute, baby' Waititi was determined. He did exactly what he set out to do.

I do really wish Taika would consider having more serious flashbacks to the past and then to the present in Love and Thunder! Like they had an opportunity to see the Snap and the resulting five years from the perspective of the surviving Asgardians! For me, Gorr’s people lost a good number of their population before and during the snap, their starvation didn’t help matters leading to him and his daughter in them being two of a now very small dwindling surviving group! Darcy Lewis would’ve lived a difficult five years without Erik Selvig and Jane Foster having seen them both vanish while Foster was undergoing treatments! Richard Madison would at first struggle with the first several months after the snap, but would then mellow over the next five years by attending therapy groups! Thor, would be informed by someone that Sif was among the vanished further increasing his self-guilt and hatred towards Thanos! Kraglin Obfonteri, who although not Asgardian would spend the five years trying to find fellow surviving Ravagers and Xandarians who survived the snap! Valkyrie, Korg, Miek and the Asgardians who didn’t vanish would be finding ways in trying to cope with not just the Statesman Massacre but also the Snap while heading for Norway! Hildegund, having lost her husband, home and then twice half of her people would be struggling with her grief as her kids were among the snapped! Tyr and a good number of Einherjar were off world when the events of Thor Ragnarok and Infinity War occurred, when the Snap occurred; Tyr witnessed half his men vanish and would have his surviving warriors carry their ashes as they would go to Earth to find Thor! As for Zeus, he would in my mind continue his air of Boastfulness but would learn of the emotional pain Thor had undergone through losing his mother, Volstagg, Fandral, Hogun, his father Odin, having to kill his sister, home, half of his people then another half and then five miserable years causing the Olympian God to have some amount of Good Sympathy for the Asgardian God and would then ask who was alarming Thor; then the following would occur but differently; with Zeus replying that he will send a good number of Olympian Warriors along with Ares to provide help for Thor; and before they left, Zeus would inform Thor “As We Both Share the Power of Thunder and Lightning, the Nine Realms are in our Hands… people might’ve forgotten about us, but you’ve given me the knowledge that their are mortal humans who haven’t forgotten our history… for this, I will aid you from my Palace on Omnipotence City and you will always have allies here….” and hence this is how I will depict Zeus while maintaining his boastfulness as I said before, but would also have a willing ear for those with genuine concerns and sympathy for those who undergo agony and pain!

So, so true. I loved Ragnarok too. Absolute trash movie. The worst in the MCU by a mile stretch. The character assassination of Thor is complete. Please do not pay for this garbage, stream it online but do not give them your money for entirely butchering Thor. So sick of them keeping Thor imprisoned in a character limbo where they refuse to allow him to be King in favour of 'King' Valkryie the enslaver who twice refused him helping their people in favour of keeping him a prisoner for the Grandmaster. And now he's regressed into the God of Hammers again with Mjolnir despite, in the context of the MCU, having upgraded to what Eitri called 'The King's Weapon' and for a 2nd movie ends just fucking around, first with the Guardians and now with...Gorr's daughter of all random people? What the hell are they doing to Thor instead of giving him a respectful arc ending like Cap and Tony?

I really don't want to blame taiki for this horrible movie... but somthing inside me feels like disney kind of gave him a little to much free rain with the dialogue, and screen writing.. Its one joke after another... AM i wrong for thinking that? What the hell were they thinking? Does noone else want to see some contenuity? OK OK the multiverse is messed up.. loki made that a staple point.. But... thats about it !!! so far Black Widow falls flat on its expensive face... dr strange went all over the multiverse and yet went nowhere with the story arc of the mcu... This Thor movie also did nothing for the story of the mcu.. I want to go off on this movie but I just wanted to sort of get my point across about that because I feel like thats the biggest let down.

When you realize you've become the thing you've been fighting... Honestly though, at least be consistent or intellectually honest. 6:02 "A straight up regression of his character" is exactly what they said about Luke in the ST, which you repeatedly refuted. Why can't Thor be traumatized & have to go through the stages of grief multiple times in his multi-millennium lifespan if Luke can do it twice in 30 years? Answer: he can. Thor thought joining the Guardians would be enough to help him recover from the effects of his Thanos trauma. He had flings with other women in his adventures with the Guardians, but none of them lasted. So he still has the need to find his other half, but hanging out with his bros is not fulfilling him in the meantime nor is it helping him get where he knows he needs to go. He's holding onto the past he likes remembering while avoiding the past he needs to face. Enter Sif, his old female friend who sets him on his quest to defeat Gorr who is coming after Asgard next, where he finds Jane, who 1. has never stopped being the love of his life because he bonded Mjolnir to her just like Odin did for him, and 2. has literally become his other half. Gorr is the perfect villain to reflect Thor's arc in this movie because it's Thor's acceptance of his role in his breakup with Jane that gives him authority to tell Gorr to use his wish to save his daughter instead of seeking vengeance. Thor had to humble himself instead of holding onto bitterness & playing the blame game, just like Gorr. Thor answered why he never granted anyone else his powers before in Age of Ultron: "You're all not worthy." So what if Jane's not mentioned in every Thor appearance? He still thinks about her after they break up, but then he has to save Asgard, then he has to save the universe, including Jane. He had bigger fish to fry, he reached a low point in his life, then he picked himself up from it with the help of friends, and now he's ready to revisit the problem of Jane. There's no massive failure in this movie warranting the death by a thousand cuts you're giving it. I've questioned the volume of humor since Ragnarok, but why shouldn't he still be able to use humor as a defense or coping mechanism? He's still dealing with a lot of personal issues, which he overcomes by accepting the role of Mr. Mom. Let Thor have his friends around him, if for nothing else than moral support. Quit being one of Rian's manbabies.
