I've been on keto for about a year now and it has helped me so much. Before I could easily eat 4000 calories a day, now I have to find ways to eat over 1500 calories. Lost over 100 pounds and I have never felt better and my mind has never felt as clear like you mentioned.

Been on keto for about 6 months, lost 40 pounds. I've lost this amount of weight before but it wasn't this fast nor this easy. I personally haven't noticed a different feeling of energy, but as thoorin mentioned, you feel less cravings and more thirsty if you stay true to it.

Yeah I find that you get a lot of cravings during the 1st few weeks but after a while it goes away. As for energy I feel like I have more energy and I don't get a bad feeling if I don't eat after waking up or at noon like I would if I was on a normal diet.

I think the mechanisms that regulate appetite are greatly underappreciated when it comes to weight loss. Our bodies and brains dont measure calories and then tell us when we have had enough, but instead there are multiple systems that give suggestions on when to stop eating. The food we eat nowadays is way denser in calories than the stuff we evolved to eat. Feeling full is partially caused by the amount of food we eat, and thus you are very likely to overeat if you eat stuff with a lot of calories in small amounts. The easiest way to feel less hungry and lose weight is to find enjoyable ways to eat food with few calories. The more you eat stuff like vegetables the less you will automatically gorge on other food. Brute forcing with calories in/out restrictions work, but its not a very enjoyable or natural feeling way to lose weight. Finding a diet which allows you to eat as much as you want and maintain your weight is much easier to sustain in the long run.

The only thing about Keto I'll say is that it isn't a health diet to maintain on. It is very effective to lose weight with, but carbs are good for you in general. It's just important to remember to limit them. Portion control is a key part of health that most people suck at.

Fascinating listen, for I myself lost 25 kilo over one year, with 15 more in the following three using very similar methods. For the first year I just counted calories religiously and went from 112 kg to ~88, after which I hit somewhat of a plateau. Afterwards for the remaining 15 kilos, I tried many different methods but the one I found working out was the very same method of eating about 65-70% of my calories during one big meal in the evening. I kept kidding myself for ages, even after hundreds of failures that I would buy a bag of candy or large amounts of chocolate, and I'd regulate eating it over multiple days. Never worked out. Afterwards, I'd start buying only small chocolate bars and stuff, and I'd make myself go get it from the store that was far away from my apartment, I'd ride my bike 10 times further than my trip to the local store just to get that one candy bar. I don't think Thorin himself was as fat as myself, but I can attest that the methods work just as well when you are close to morbid obesity just as well if you just have some few extra kilos and need just a slight dietary change.

I agree with basically everything here, except the points about cutting out desserts, and fruits. You can make lots of sweet tasting desserts that aren't very calorie-dense, but still satisfy your sweet-tooth. With fruits, no one ever got fat by eating too many apples or strawberries. They have a lot of volume, and not many calories, so make you feel fuller compared to something more dense.

i really like the point of dieting being a skill that can be applied on many goals in life. that step by step approach. that approach of not being perfekt right from the start but rather better yourself every day a little and maybe have some stepbacks but over all getting somewere, losing weight over month is extremly valuable. in a society were instant gratification is so dominant and popular and available, dieting shows you that really valuable things in life need hard day by day grind not one time efforts and some kind of magical luck or talent.

I have much personal experience with weight loss and could honestly write a thesis but I'll try and cut to the heart of it. One thing matters: motivation. A whole multitude of diets will work if you actually follow them but you don't, because you are not motivated. That is all it's about, stop searching for the 'diet that works' and figure out how to motivate yourself to get the job done. For me I get annoyed with my weight, go cold turkey and absolutely HAM for 4 months and it works, for other people that would be a terrible plan and they need to build up gradually. Spend your time figuring out what works for you, and how you can nurture your own willpower. You cannot overcome the laws of thermodynamics, losing weight IS about eating less, it's just that that requires a lot of effort. Counting calories is really the best advice and there is a good reason for it being so unfashionable at the moment, because it's hard, because it exposes you for the liar that you are and forces you to confront the only real cause of your weight, your lack of effort.

If the aim is to lose weight doing exercise will make that seem worse. Fat is lighter than muscle so the more exercise you do you may not lose or actually gain weight. Weight in itself is not bad its just a measure. If you solely want to lose weight then bear in mind exercise will build muscle which has a weight.

Ketonic diets aren't that good Thorin, It essentially kills your neurons, they need the fat to function. Carbs counting + healthy eating (a balance, with protein, mineral, vitamins, fat and carbs) + exercise AND most of all a good nights sleep. This is the key to success. I've tried all diets, tho i've lost weight on all of diets, i've got BAD symptoms from keto, lfhc, lchf etc. One thing to try is intermittent fasting.

Thorin, how do you track calories when you travel for events? Do you just count all the time your traveling as "semi-cheat"? Seems like it'd be almost impossible to keep track if you're eating at non-chain restaurants (and thus no nutrition info). I imagine it's the same for alcohol? I find it very difficult to try to remember how many drinks I've had the morning after. Love to hear everyone else's thoughts on these two topics as well!
@littleclatchy

Download myfitnesspal (or similar app) mate, has a barcode scanner and a huge accurate database, only takes a few minutes to track a full days food if you do it before every meal/before you eat snack. In terms of eating out, skip breakfast/small lunch and eat a good meal or attempt to track it semi-accurately by entering the cooked ingredients into the app, after a while of doing this it gets easy to get a semi-accurate count. It's not impossible if you know how to eyeball grams, the impossible part is you can't see the oil used. In terms of alcohol, you can look at it 2 ways. It's pretty much the worst thing on a diet, I'd cut it out completely, however we are all human and need a social life and drink every now and then. Measure one is eat a lot less on the day you drink, measure two is to look at the weekly, not daily calorie count to still achieve a deficit. A good tip for alcohol is to not drink much beer and try things like vodka with diet soda, as it has 110 calories compared to 300+ found in a pint of beer. I still lost 70/80 pounds while drinking every weekend. Try your best not to get a pizza when your drunk too. I've stopped drinking now as I've started to work out more and I find it makes me feel like absolute shit, once you get healthy, you get used to feeling great all the time, and a binge on sugar, alcohol etc will throw you off. In terms of the keto diet Thorrin talks about, I'm not to sure about it, I'm a vegan so I tend to eat more carbs/fibre than the average person (just not a lot of sugar/simple carbs), I've never had a problem losing or putting on weight (I just up the healthy fat intake for this). I've also never had a issue with carbs not filling me up either, although I eat something like 90% wholewheat/complex carbs, the rest fruit and the odd treat. I have a very active lifestyle so at the minute I'm eating around 3500-4000 calories, I feel keto is better for a more sedentary lifestyle because for most people eating 2000 kcals a day or less will leave you fucking ravished, keto helps with that.

I have to say I disagree with 90% of your advice. I thought of you as being analytical logical person, but you seem to have been swayed by this keto thing. I will try keep this brief.. First of all, we are not addicted to sugar, our bodies preferred energy source is just carbohydrates(which we store and burn as glycogen), that is just our biology. Carbs are not bad! Refined sugar is bad obviously but so is any processed food including oil. So now for weight loss you recommend eating calorie dense fatty foods, instead of more calorie dilute carbohydrates based foods... Like you said calories in calories out, so lets do some maths.. 1 gram of carbs = 4cals 1 gram of fat = 9cals, that is more than double the density of calories. Finally you said the secret to losing weight or being successful is being able to make it a lifestyle to stay consistent. The problem with the a fat based diet is that you will end up with the diseases which come along with it, mainly being heart disease from all the saturated fat and cholesterol. You can lose weight on any diet, but whats the point in being slim if your overall health is destroyed and having a heart attack at 60. You seem interested in nutrition though so maybe you should check out 'Nutrition Facts' on youtube where where Dr. Gregor presents studies that have not been funded by industry! Love everything else you talk about though, peace :)
