A lot of the sparkles and awesome lighting and floaty glowy things in the opening scene are because when Rocky gets going he feels free to hallucinate a little bit. Same thing happens when he spots the dynamite shack. The boy has a vivid imagination. And just possibly impaired survival instincts. He and Freckle are cousins. Their poor stress management skills, AKA being a bit batshit, may be genetic.

I've been looking forward to this! Also, some fun little details for you: -Freckle's constant battle with Rocky's tail in his face. -Mordecai never misses a shot. He is as meticulous as clockwork, hence the sound design, and his pain at being muddied by water. He never takes a shot he isn't 100% sure he'll hit, or he only misses when he means to or when fate chooses for him. He misses them the first time due to the ball of chaos that is Rocky taking them off-road, and he chooses not to take the shot at Ivy because he used to work for Lackadaisy, hence Serafine worrying he'll be "sentimental about old times," and he wouldn't shoot Ivy, Atlas' god-daughter, out of loyalty for his old boss. The first time he aims at the car, he sees Rocky, not Ivy, and he shows no hesitation. Every other time he goes to shoot, he doesn't waste a bullet, unlike Freckle and Serafine. -Viktor isn't Russian, as the chat thought. He's from Austro-Hungary. A soldier from the Central Powers, who defected to our side and moved to the US after WW1. A good thing this comic does is show the abundance of immigrants forced into a life of crime by Prohibition and The Depression. He used to have the same job as Mordecai in Lackadaisy, being a hatchet-man, before Mordecai put his knee the opposite way than it should be using a crowbar. Now he's the barman, hence the abrasive attitude. He's protective of Ivy, hence stopping her drinking, glaring at Freckle and looking angry when they say they had an "incident" during the pick-up. -To add to my prior point, Rocky and Freckle are Irish and Freckle joined cos the Police Academy rejected him and Rocky was part of a travelling circus and many bands all over due to his idiosyncrasies or possible neurodivergence preventing him from getting stable work until joining the band at Lackadaisy and becoming an errand boy for Mitzi, Serafine and Nicodeme are Creole/Cajun African-American and were orphans with nowhere else to turn, Mordecai is from a Jewish family in NY and needed the money before being saved from many bad choices by Atlas, Viktor is from The Balkans and after being a soldier was assumed to be a commie and nearly arrested, Dorian Zibowski (Zib) has a last name that implies Eastern-European influence in his family and travelled around with Mitzi and their band having never had stable work, and the unseen double-dealing "Funeral Home" suppliers have a Brit in their mix who was a former soldier misplaced by the war and his marriage to an American Nurse. Many of these characters represent the real-life minorities that took to a life of crime when a lawful life failed them. In the story they all have their own reasons for being there, much like real life. Makes it more historically accurate. -The quarry that Rocky wrecks, he wrecked on purpose. You can see his intent when he purposefully crashes through the "Sable" sign with an evil grin. Mr Sedgewick Sable, the top-hat wearing fop at the bar, AKA Wick, is the owner of the Quarry and Rocky has beef with him, hence him messing with him later about the Dynamite and the Heavy Machinery. We see him at the very end of the vid, lamenting the damage done to his quarry. -Rocky is so unstable that no-one allows him to use guns. He still finds ways to cause chaos though. -The obituary Mitzi is reading in her study is a real one from the time period. A famous socialite and actress killed by her scarf getting caught in the wheels of her convertible car. Mitzi in the comics is known to read obituaries, since they're more light-hearted than the reality of her failing speakeasy. -Freckle is so good as to out-manoeuvre a cold-blooded killer like Mordecai because he was in the police academy. He'd have made a great cop if it weren't for his familial history of... instability. We see this whenever he gets his hands on a weapon. The only time he doesn't become a giggling loon like his cousin Rocky is when the gun it so small it'll only distract someone. He's still a stone cold killer up until the point his crush Ivy is in danger, then he forgets his training, wastes his bullets and exposes himself to Mordecai. That says a lot about him right there. -Zib isn't a sloppy drunk. He doesn't drink. He's just sloppy. Consciousness is a continuum for him, not a binary. He's nicknamed Triangle Cat by the fandom, since he's drawn exclusively through triangular shapes. This strange existence is why he hasn't been able to hold any other job besides itinerant musician, he's one of those spacy, artistically minded savant types. Jack Sparrow mixed with Oscar Wilde. -Serafine's weapon is a BAR, not an AK or Tommy. Freckle's gun is a Tommy. Her BAR is custom, with a sawn-off barrel and crocodile engraving on the foregrip. She and her brother Nicodeme are from the Bayous and Swamps of New Orleans, hence the croc and their lack of complaint about water and mud. This also explains their creole/cajun accents and odd Francophone interjections. -My favourite little detail, direct from the comics, Mitzi's little "Pat-Pat" on Viktor's arm when he glares at Freckle and Ivy dancing. She does it a lot in the comics and I'm so glad it was included for no reason other than it's adorable. -Every cat is carefully chosen. While the characters could be human, and the story wouldn't change, their personalities are kind of influenced by their breed; or vice-versa. Best example is Freckle; adorable and such a sweetheart, but also absolutely mental when set off. Big orange cat energy. PLEASE read the comic if you get chance, it is so good and the art is breath-taking. Considering it was beautiful in 2006 when it started, and Tracy's had that long to practice, it's stunning now. My favourite panel is from the page labelled "Voodooienne" on their website.

" Oh that's an AK. " - Good thing her fiance wasn't here. The " villain " woman had a BAR. That thing had two fire modes. Fully automatic and FULLER automatic. ... Your BAR literally had a switch that nearly doubled the fire rate if you were US military at the time. The implication is that the ones chasing the main characters were all veterans or at least had ties to veterans. The woman has a BAR. The buff male has a Mauser C96. I think his name is Mordecai- the uptight marksman cat - is using a Colt1911. The sidearm Americans used for WW1, 2 and that we till use modernized variants of today. I only know WW1 and 2 guns, really. They're neat because it's cool to see all the various workarounds different nations had for accuracy, firepower and rate of fire. Thompsons for example being great accuracy and punching power-wise because of the whole .45 caliber thing, but then you had the fact the Thompson was so heavy and expensive, which is the opposite you want for an SMG - so instead you got cheap grease guns that worked much better and were still accurate / useful for tank crews or other units that were doing things like fighting in the tropical climates around Japan's islands.

The rifle isn't an AK either. AKs weren't a thing at the time of prohibition. Seraphine's gun is a Browning Automatic Rifle, or a BAR for short, one of the primary weapons used by the american troops during WW2. It's a powerful and well-built gun that served the military well enough, but it was also notorious for being overly heavy and not being used as it was intended. It was meant to be used like a mounted machine gun, but most soldiers treated it like a modern assault rifle, much like Seraphine does in this series.

This animation is absolutely outstanding. And since the production of the comic is so glacially slow, I REALLY hope they can get picked up in a format that moves the story along. The literal fat cat Mordecai (the cat with the gat) was talking to on the phone is Asa Sweet, a prominent "legitimate local businessman". As you can sort of gather, Lackadaisy USED to do big business back when Atlas (the Tabby in the painting, Mitzi's late husband) was around, but has fallen on much harder times now and is in danger of being forced out of the business entirely by folks like Asa. As for why Mordecai, such a professional and deadly sort, didn't take several shots...notice both times he ended up with Ivy (the young lady) in his sights. Without going into spoilers, it's reasonable to conclude that Mordecai either doesn't like to risk hitting a girl, or given that he apparently recognized the crew as being from Lackadaisy he has history with them in particular...Something to read or watch to find out more about! Regarding firearms, wet powder is rarely a thing with metallic cartridges absent extreme circumstances like leaving them submerged for DAYS. If you ever want to learn more about guns, I highly recommend it, as they're not nearly as complicated as you might think, and can be quite rewarding. Especially if you enjoy media where they're prominently featured.

I discovered Lackadaisy thanks to this pilot, it's really a niche, but a very very cool one. I hope that the series that will result from it (if there is a pilot episode, it means that there will be a series) will live up to the comic and will allow more people to know this work. I also made a shocking discovery: Modecai, the tick-tock gun man, is only 28 years old.
