Walter J McCarthy Jr departing 4/7/24 in strong winds and some fairly nice waves! She was loaded with over 70 thousand tons of iron ore pellets.
Built in 1977 as the Belle River and first ship of her design, the McCarthy is one of the largest and heaviest freshwater vessels in the world at exactly 1000ft in length and over 100ft wide. She is a regular visitor here in Duluth, and was here on her second visit of the season. Cargo and ship combined, she weighs in at roughly 200 million pounds, thus why you don’t see the ship moving up and down at all in these waves! She has the capacity to carry 80,900 tons, however she has never actually been loaded that full, as the Great Lakes’ current cargo record is 77,500 tons, set by her twin sister ship Indiana Harbor in 1997. This is due to several factors, most importantly the water and sand levels in the St Mary’s, St Clair and Detroit Rivers, which constantly shift and can easy ground large ships like this if they’re overloaded. Other conditions include forecasted weather and condition of the cargo holds. All together it means this ship (and her four sisters) have never actually been fully loaded in their over 40 years of sailing.
