I am so happy I found your tutorial. I was having a lot of doubt with my ability to make it look "smoothly painted" like I thought they supposed to look. I was worried about the "dimples" in the stitches, but I understand now that it is just going to be there, and it actually looks like brush strokes. As I watched you it just all came together for me. Love the waltz music. Made me relax and not stress over my ability. Oh, and also... the 2 needles for the 2 colors, I hadn't tried that, but will now. Thank you again for sharing.

I use several reference pictures when I'm working silk shading Sandy: I have a colour reference picture (a photo or a painting I have done myself), a black and white copy for tonal reference, a stitch order and a stitch direction! The more you plan silk shading, the better it comes out; I never start a piece without these bits of information

I learned to embroider only about 5 months ago and I’m finding that for me this is the toughest stitch. So you have 2 different threads going at the same time? I’ve never seen it done that way and your finished piece is one of the nicest I’ve seen. Was this hard for you as well when you first started? I really look forward to classes opening some day again so I can get some hands on experience with a teacher
@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery

Long and short can take a while to get the hang of. There are different ways of doing it, some embroiderers work one colour at a time so only ever have one needle on the go, I was taught to do it this way (at the Royal School of Needlework) and therefore sometimes have up to six needles on the go! Both ways work perfectly well it just depends on how you were taught. I suggest just practicing on a simple petal shape with perhaps two colours to start off with until you get the hang of it. It isn't like learning a single stitch, you have to understnad what you are doing then practice it a lot!
