My impression is that many engineers and academic in the natural sciences has shallow understanding of history. I once heard (in a video) the famed Stephen Hawking reiterate the common myth about Galileo Galilei and the Church. I had investigated it myself and found the myth to be far from accurate. This showed to me that expertise in one field is not transferable to others. I would regard Hawking's writings on theoretical astrophysics as credible, but his opinions about history or philosophy is just as good as anybody else's opinion.
@franciscodanconia3551

I would argue that his opinions on history and philosophy are less relevant than the average person's on the grounds that his entire professional life was dedicated to one subject to the exclusion of all others. I would also posit that there is a dearth of scientists and engineers who even have a cursory knowledge of the philosophy of science, so while they might be qualified for the data acquisition portion of science, they are incapable of evaluating the quality of their hypothesis or rigorously testing their theories.

It is design that enables the interaction of matter and energy to be consistent under various sets of physical conditions. Consider the structure: The properties and behavior of all forms of matter result from their subatomic structure. The properties and behavior of all the various forms of energy results from even deeper levels of structure. The properties of matter and energy present in each instant of space/time dictate the physical conditions and interaction of forces. Now consider: What intent decided the structures at each level? What foresight enabled the precise ordering of physical events in space-time to produce what we now continue to observe? What information was formulated and used to precisely order and combine each level of structural elements to produce the initial singularity? Without a Supreme Being you end up with infinite regression that leads nowhere 😀

Aristotle's 'Physics' points out that the Earth is round based on the nature of falling objects. Copernicus was inspired by a disciple of Pythagorus 2,000 years earlier. Having appreciated this channel for rational discussion surrounding science, truth be told, Al Einstein has been seriously scrutinized lately on the topic of relativity putting the spherical geocentric Earth back in perspective. Many scientists "in reality" including Einstein made reference to the fact that the geocentric "spherical" Earth is still on the table for discussion if his theory of relativity were disproved. Wolfgang Smith is one such a physicist still alive today who makes all of this very clear.

Everyone has a worldview based upon their beliefs derived by the evidence they acknowledge to be true. The problem with naturalism is that it is based on a vast amount of unproven non-science. As defined that a God is just something that is highly esteemed, naturalism by definition is religion. Buddhism defined no central deity, and it’s a religion. In fact it is him can put the universe and nature as it’s deity. God’s best

I was always taught that the reason the church leaders condemned galileos’ discovery was because they believed that that heavens were perfect, and the earth was profane. Not exactly a view that is biblical, and it certainly doesn’t jive with the notion that his discovery was some kind of ‘demotion.’ Bottom line is that the Catholic Church had embraced traditions that weren’t scientific or biblical, yet they treated them as such for various reasons. It was the fathers of science that used actual scripture as their motivation for scientific discoveries. Something that is conveniently omitted from modern explanations of ‘the history of science.’

I do not believe in religion or any biblical God but how we define "intelligence" makes all the difference. Semantics limits the entire process. For me the main question remains why would the primordial matter of the known universe, regardless of wether you postulate that it may or may not be conscious or intelligent, need, want or even be able to organize itself into complex organs like a brain for instance capable of consciousness and thus intelligence if not without some predetermined impetus that would want and need it to be so? From a purely logical perspective you can't get a "Something" from a "No" "Thing". To simply invoke "Natural" forces also means absolutely nothing. We could debate ad nauseam how you define "natural" as well. When "Consciousness" is really understood then we might have the answers to the existential questions that are presently not available regardless of how they are summarily dismissed by orthodox scientists.

Given house arrest in his own cushy villa, able to write and publish his books on mechanics the rest of his life, not execution. The copernican demotion myth is mostly unrelated to the galileo affair. The science warfare myth says that Copernicus's discovery that the earth was a planet not the center of Aristotle's universe is suppose to "prove" to later 19-20th century humanists that God did not exit. But in medieval thought divinity the sphere of God was at the top of the universe, and the world of change and suffering was at the sinner, so in fact center wasn't the best place to be. There were copernicans in the church, and theologians who agreed with galileo's approach to scripture and science. No one objected to Copernicus book de Revolutionibus for 70 years after he published. Lots of current astronomers believed in it, but they discussed it as a "theoretical" hypothesis they could argue about and publish, but not claim to be a proven fact. There was no proof of the earth's movement until early 18nth -middle 19nth century. Galileo was a catholic who wanted to convert to the church to copernicanism that the earth revolved around the sun in fact. His arrogance in trying to beard his ex-friend the current pope as a retarded character who believed in geocentrism in his popular science book in Italian fried his potatoes.

As Michael pointed out in the last video the early Church fathers had adopted the Greek sciences and cosmology and (not mentioned) calendar . " It was declared to be particularly unworthy for this , the holiest of festivals ( Easter) to follow the customs ( the calculation ) of the Jews ........ but also it is right to demand what our reason (Greek calculation) approves , and that we should have nothing to do with the Jews . " Emperor Constantine to the council at Nicea in AD 325 . Historically and Scripturally Gods People have a calendar that was understood to be a flat earth under a doom . Daniel warned that the Babylonian anti Messiah system would change the laws (Torah) and times (calendar) and Feasts . Copernicus was working on how to fix the calendar (Justinian ) with it's "Easter" problem when he came across the likes of Hermes Trismagis with the sun god at the center And this Copernican Revolution did indeed set the world in a spin . " " Where has God gone ? " he said . " I shall tell you . We have killed Him - you and I . We are His murderers . But how have we done this ? How were we able to drink up the sea ? Who gave us the sponge to wipe away the entire horizon ? What did we do when we unchained the earth from the sun ? Whither it is moving now ? Whither we are moving now ? Away from all suns ? Are we not perpetually falling ? Backward , sideward , forward , in all directions ? Is there any up or down left ? Are we not straying through an infinite nothing ? Do we not feel the breath of empty space ? Is it not colder ? ...... "" The Parable of the Madman by Nietzsche . Thus says YHWH " Stand in the ways and see , And ask (seek) for the ancient paths ( ways ) , where the good way is ; Then you will find rest for your souls . But they said " WE WILL NOT WALK IN IN ! Dirty politicking and showing his arse to the pope. His theory was very much appreciated by the religious establishment (Pope Urban even offered his own little explanation for why Galileo was correct; which Galileo put in the mouth of the fool in his Dialogo); but they continually reminded him it was a theory (they were right, because he was wrong: he kept trying to work out circular orbits) so he invented various pointless controversies as distractions from his theory development hell. It eventually caught up to him.

Galileo's patron was Pope Urban. His "heresy" was that he dared challenge the Roman Catholic Church's interpretation of certain Biblical passages (which the Church believed supported Aristotle's pagan belief that the earth is the center of the universe). Given that the pope was literally at war with Protestant rebels who were defying the Council of Trent's edict that only the RCC had the authority to interpret Scripture, he could hardly allow a guy on his payroll to defy the dictates of the Church. Johannes Kepler (a Lutheran) received no such rebuke from his church for his more accurate and comprehensive claim that the Earth not only orbited the Sun, but it did so along an elliptical path at varying velocity.

I agree that educated men of the middle ages would better argue for the spherical earth then their modern counterparts. But the example highlighted about the position of polaris in regards to the equator is not a strong argument alone, unless you presume that the distance to the sun and stars to be closer to the upper limit of what Eratosthenes estimated with 150 milion kilometers, or what we presume today, 93 milion miles.
