Three Dog Night is a great rock band from the 60's-70's. This band had a lot of energy. They had 3 guys with great voices that could all sing lead vocals. You've done a few of their songs already. Some of their hits are "Just An Old fashioned Love Song", "Eli's Coming", "Never Been To Spain", "Easy To Be Hard", "The Show Must Go On" etc.

Would be cool to hear your take on the Otis Redding version. This must be a very early 3 Dog Night performance. The lead singer, Cory Wells in this case, looks so young here. It seems kind of strange having him handle 100% of the vocals; vocal harmonies are a 3 Dog Night staple..

"try a little tenderness" was recorded well before Otis Redding did it...but he certainly added a nice touch to the composition! The Ray Noble Orchestra with vocals by Val Rosing first recorded "Try a Little Tenderness" on December 8, 1932. Charlie Palloy and his Orchestra also recorded a version of the song in 1932. Other artists who recorded the song in 1933 include Ted Lewis, Ruth Etting, and Bing Crosby. Bob and Alf Pearson also released a version in 1933, and Frank Sinatra included it on his debut album, The Voice of Frank Sinatra, in 1946.

This song goes back to 1932. Bing Crosby recorded it in early 1933. Frank Sinatra had it on an album in 1946. Otis Redding version has been the most popular. I thought Three Dog Night's version is a little too much like Otis Redding's version.

If you're interested in continuing to discover more country music, then I'd suggest checking out "Marty Stewart - This One's Going To Hurt You (For A Long, Long Time) ft. Travis Tritt" Marty Stewart is an American country and bluegrass music singer, songwriter, and musician. Active since 1968, Stewart initially toured with Lester Flatt, and then with Johnny Cash's Road band before beginning work as a solo artist in the early 1980's. Stewart has recorded over 20 studio albums and has charted over 30 times on the Billboard Hot Country songs chart, and he has also won 5 grammy awards. Travis Tritt (the singer with the beard) Travis Tritt signed with Warner Brothers Records in 1989. He has released 12 studio albums and his songs charted more than 40 times on the Hot Country Songs chart. He also received grammy awards in 1991 and 1998.

Otis rules with his very popular song 💥& Cory Wells was fantastic with his cover, the entire band showed respect to Otis. I have seen a later live performance of Three Dog Night in a smaller venue where the crowd went crazy over Cory Wells performance of Try A Little Tenderness, who was dressed in a dark suit & the video was low lights, you could make out the band but the fans were in the dark during this performance. I think it was probably 5 - 10 yrs after this live performance. Sorry I don’t know the year but it is really worthwhile finding it, if I track it down I’ll let you know, because this performance will totally amaze you & is my fav Cory Wells performance. TDN had many very big hits 🥰🔥☮️💥

Haven't heard this in decades. And the vocals are even better than what I remembered, just absolutely amazing all the way around. But now that I've been around the block for so many years as a musician and playing and fans and recording and stuff like that with people. This song has a lot of really fun things going on with its structure but it's really subtle. But they're all just getting off on it you can tell. They do a pretty good job at the old trick of trying to imply that the beat is changed from the downbeat to the offbeat or vice versa. And that Chris this wonderful tension for a bit as your brain kind of hears it felt ways, and then boom when there ready to go back to the basic original and it has so much impact.

@lindazee I am curious: What songs did they write? I saw 3 the internet says Chuck Negron gave us: "One", "Joy to the World " and "Moma told me not to come". But pulling up the words and music and "one"-Harry Nielson, "joy"--Hoyt Axton and "Moma " by Randy Newman. I am quite willing to be wrong here. It educates me. I certainly don't care if a band never writes anything. 3 Dog Night were amazing performers! They owned their version. You know, Frank Sinatra never wrote anything...still great. Also Nat King Cole! And Barbara Streisand. Gack! I am old!

@daviddragavon7555 Your own words verified what I said, but just to clarify: You stated that they did nothing but covers, and that's simply not correct, as they recorded songs unique to them. By "original," I meant that they were not cover songs, regardless of who wrote the songs. On everything else, I think we agree that great musical artists need not necessarily be songwriters and that Three Dog Night were an excellent group, notably, in my opinion, their vocals and harmonies.
