An eye-opener of a video! Now, with these suggestions, I feel more than ready to trying my first machine quilting. I'm starting a quilt as you go set of blocks for a large tote bag. I'll search your channel for that topic; but if you haven't posted anything on it I would love to see a new video on joining the blocks (once they are quilted) in as painless way as possible.

That's terrific! I'm so glad you're giving machine quilting a try. Yes, I've taught connecting quilted blocks many times - that technique is called Quilt-As-You-Go. You can find the latest tutorial here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/2niElqKQmGOcepg&list=PLNkZhEjxH0nLPavmvPhd27EqzQh2a-Fee

Thank you, Leah! Doing the loops is great practice for NOT getting "eye lashes" on the back of your quilt! (I used to get them all the time, but with practice - a LOT of it - I don't see them anymore!!) Keeping your hands & feet going at the same speed is a learned art!!

Thank you for the site to get the cheater cloth. It will be a great way to practice and not worry about messing up a quilt top you made.

Hi Leah, I have just finished a quilt that I made with Kimberley Einmo (its taken ages) and everything that could go wrong did go wrong. I have a Bernina sit down longarm and thought stippling would be a doddle, not so it didn't look anything like yours it just looked like a lot of 'U' shapes but I will not be perturbed. You are costing me a fortune, I saw the quilt you are making and although I have the real pattern and the material to get started, after this last quilt I thought it might be a good idea to get one of the cheater quilts so I have. How do you get your quilts to look so puffy the one I just finished looked like I had quilted a piece of kitchen roll instead of batting it had no fill whatsoever and it was Hobbs. There are so many battings out there it is always difficult to know what one to get as the pattern generally just says batting. I want to quilt 3 baby quilts for around Christmas and would love for them to be puffy like yours so what one would you recommend? Thank you for your inspiration Leah, you have helped me no end. I wish I could buy from your website but I got stung quite badly by customs charges last time. I am just going through all your free motion videos starting in 2012 and they have been a real help. Sorry this is a bit long but I had to ask about the batting. All the best Laura (UK)

I'm so happy you're enjoying the videos and learning more about quilting Laura! This quilt is basted with Quilters Dream Puff, which is a super puffy polyester batting, and it also has thick Minky fabric on the back. Just a warning - minky really likes to "stick" to the machine so it feels hard to move. Just be ready for that if you decide to try it. I would look for higher loft poly batting or double layer the batting you have now. It may feel different to quilt over it because it's so thick, but it should give you the look you're after. Watching the videos, liking, sharing with your friends, and sharing a comment all helps me out. I understand with the extra customs it's hard to buy from the US. Just keep watching the videos and commenting! That'll work for me!

I have an old Kenmore from 1976, model 1760. It uses the extra tall shank foot. I can't find a darning foot to try the machine quilting. Can I use a regular straight stitch foot or zigzag foot?
@LeahDay
6 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately no, for free motion quilting you really need a darning foot that's designed to hover over the quilt so you can move it in all directions. I would advise looking online for an extra tall adapter or a foot specifically designed for your machine.

You said in the video that you were feeling lazy and didn't change the ruler foot. What foot would you normally use?
@LeahDay
6 жыл бұрын
I normally use the open toe foot so I can easily see the needle. The ruler foot is also easy to see because it's open, but I always have to mentally adjust a bit to the different look and not being able to see the needle quite so clearly.

Hey there? Have you any suggestions for a couching foot for qnique?
@LeahDay

We don't have one yet and unfortunately the different brands are not cross compatible (you can't take a foot from Handy Quilter and put it on a Grace machine). It might be something the're able to offer soon!

Hi Leah, what kind of marking pen do you use. Mine always seem to disappear so fast and yours looks so thin and seemed to last the whole video. Loved it.

For this quilt, this is printed directly onto the fabric from Spoonflower. You can find this panel here: www.spoonflower.com/fabric/3041673-building-blocks-colorful-cheater-cloth-on-white-by-leah_day For marking pens, I like a ceramic marking pencil and fine line blue pen. You can find them here: leahday.com/products/mark-your-quilt-kit

Hello mam, what is the length n width adjustments of the stitch.
@LeahDay
5 жыл бұрын
This longarm doesn't have that kind of capability. On a home machine, my stitch length is 0, width is 0 so the needle is in the center position.

The way I'm quilting in this video - with the machine as a sit down longarm - will work exactly the same way as your home machine. You can find videos on quilting all of these blocks also quilted on a home machine too. Just check the links at the end of this post: freemotionquilting.blogspot.com/2017/09/three-easy-longarm-quilting-designs.html

Hi Hazel, I follow Leah, and have learned so much from her, and one thing I have learned is that most of her designs, can be done on a domestic machine as I have. The only one I wouldn't try are the more complicated ones. I think I started following her when I started quilting and I still consider myself a beginner she is so good. lol Good luck.

This is the Grace Qnique 14+ set up in a table to be a sit down machine. I've since moved this machine to the Continuum fame, but it also worked great as a sit down too.

Or, you could take plain white or muslim fabric and a quilt marker and make your own. Much cheaper.
