There was sorta-kinda a 'genre' that predates Factorio, made up largely of Zachtronics games, styled as 'games for engineers'. They tend to be more puzzle-based rather than open-ended, but old flash games like the Codex of Alchemical Engineering (since remade, polished, and improved upon as Magnum Opus) involved smashing bits together to make more complicated bits in increasingly complex production chains, etc. I played me a whole lot of SpaceChem back in the day.

Love my factorio, artillery is supremely satisfying, after defending wave after wave and constantly stressing, finally getting artillery and just fuckin bombing biters from half a mile away and watching the shell slowly travel and just gib ten worms is just... chefs kiss. But Mindustry is also a super addicting game. I think it would be interesting to have a 2D factory builder where the goal is to get to the core of alien planets, constantly digging down, needing new tech to get deeper and unlocking new upgrades like thermal power but also constantly having to expand towards the top to get more low tier material to continue the grind

I do recommend the game to all.

Nice video, didn't know about shapes.io before now. My personal somewhat factorio like game ranking would be: 1. Factorio 2. Factory Town (fantasy setting and 3D make this pretty interesting also I kind of like not having an avatar to control, not needing to walk around the map gives just building stuff more focus) 3. Mindustry 4. Production Line (about building a car factory, surprisingly enjoyable) 5. Automachef (about automated cooking, was surprised by how well suited the theme of cooking stuff is to automation and it's optimization, food spoilage and rush hours in particular make things pretty neat) 6. Autonauts (all about programming bots instead of using conveyor belts or such) 7. Blueprint Tycoon (you build a town but each production building has a blueprint that would have been like a mini Zachtronics game puzzle if they were implemented slightly differently but as is I found the way it works too simple) 8. Some Ludum Dare game from at least a year ago that I forgot the name of (it was about magic in some form) 9. Survival Vacancy (Terraria like, not super interesting to me and pretty far from finished) 10. Automation Empire (Would be awesome if it didn't have ton of stupid limitations, just one example would be that pipes used to deliver resources to nearby structures connect only in a straight line and come only in lengths of 1 and 3 which means lots of time spent figuring out the exact spacing your structures should have and/or doing some silly workarounds just to get resources across a 2 or 4 tile gap) Anyway when Satisfactorio first came out I quickly noted that my PC probably can't run it very well but it's performance might have been optimized since then so maybe I should look into it again.

Anyway some other factorio like games I've played since my first comment are * Dream Engines Nomad Cities a cool game kind of similar to Warptorio mod(also reminds me of Eggoria which is a lovely nomadic city builder) * Satisfactory, it was nice and worked decently on my old PC. * Dyson Sphere Program which I played for quite a while despite getting abysmal FPS, liked how jetpack worked in that so much that decided to add a jetpack mod to Factorio though obviously that wasn't quite the same thing. * ReFactory, still early in Early Access so didn't play much but it's seemingly trying to feel less exploitative with more focus on green energy and such and in general trying to be more appealing to people who would be passionate about that. * InfraSpace, much more of a city builder, I feel like most of my time was spent building and adjusting roads but it's still pretty factorio like overall.

Yeah its kinda hard to understand why mindustry would be the best if these 3. But it is. At least for me. You have to play for a stupidly long time to fully understand it. To know that you have created schematics that you couldnt possibly explain to very many people. That only a select few can even fathon how you make every single resource from scrap. Or how you create power seemingly out of thin air. Even people who have played for a hundred ours are still in their beginning stages. THEEEEN, you get to multiplayer. Where nothing you learned as of tactics or space management applies. Where itll only take the opponent a few minutes to find out how to completely eradicate you. Even though you have 5 layers of thorium walls 2 layers of mend projectors and an american shit ton of foreshadows. Love this game and i will play it until the very very bitter end

I'm not sure if this is common for people like me, but I have actually owned and played all the games mentioned in this video, so I kinda wanna give my opinion. - Factorio factorio is one of those games that I have always been obsessed with but I never actually got to buy it, so when I remembered this classic from my childhood it just had to be the next game I buy, and to this day I don't regret my decision at all. Being a very fun game to sink your time into and also a great game for exploding tons of enemies with your automatic grenade factory, the only real downside to it is that for more casual players it could be a bit overwhelming and not so fun to play if you're not into the combat being basically forced upon you. After all a great game if you're looking for a more complicated and thurough factory game. - Satisfactory what can I say, this is probably the best factory game I have ever played. It has awesome grafics, sound design, research mechanics, factory building, actually some really creative and allowing building for all your architectual needs. It is basically a 1up to the games it took inspiration from, which doesn't mean that the other games like factorio haven't done certain things better, what I'm saying is that with a bit more work and the game coming out of early access, this is and is always going to be a masterpiece in the industry by coffee stain If you love being satisfied by nicely lined up factories and also love the though of exploring an alien planet, then this game is worth every penny. - Mindustry even with my limited experience with this game I can tell that it's a treat to anyone who loves tower defense and factory building. I could find myself coming up with creative sollutions to problems I would never think I'd have to face in a game like this. It has a very unique idea and a great execution, I think it's really underappreciated and deserves more love than it gets. I'm not too much into the combat focused games but I still very much enjoyed it and would recommend at the very least trying out the itch.io version. overall, an awesome game with an awesome idea and a really cool artstyle as well. - Shapez.io now, this game may seem a little barebones at first, but it is a favourite of mine and if you give it a try you'll soon understand why. Having a very simple idea while having the game be so much fun to play, this game can get really fun, really fast. At the start I saw it through a youtube video and it really grew on me when I tried out the browser version. I bought it as soon as I could just so I could experience the full version for myself. If I'm going to be honest it did get a bit boring later on but I managed to keep myself going with just starting another save and trying different methods of planning out my factory and after all, the game gets really frequent updates from (I think) the one passionate developer that works on this game and it also has a puzzle DLC so now you have a whole plethera of things you can use to motivate yourself to play. Great game to play for relaxation on your free time. And that probably concludes this. I just want to say that this is all my opinion and if you disagree you can CALMLY respond and propose your opinions and experiences with any of these games. Also props to whoever actually reads this, I apreciate you very much and also thanks to Ingeniouseclown for making this very entertaining video, so entertaining in fact, that I wasted at least an hour on this comment. :)

I'd like a 2D factorio with way more exploration and some impactful decisions. For instance a snowy biome could have no enemies, but once you get pollution it melts snow which floods your base and also invites enemies. Or you could have desert where you need water to cool down your factory. And the incentive to go there is that these are the only places where specific resources are common, you can of course tap into tiny patches in safe areas but you will feel how you starve for resources. If the game invited you to explore distant lands with diverse biomes, mechanics, risks and payoffs then it would be great. How about delinearizing gameplay? Maybe an alternate route to get something? How about more hostile fauna, maybe some infighting we can use thanks to careful wipe out of a few key nests? You know factorion, but on drugs. I didn’t really touch the mods that much, I got quickly overwhelmed by Pyandon’s, which is probably natural, but still I doubt there’s that level of mods out there. Anyway, anyone else get feelings factorio is just perfect base that needs more development?

Actually started with Satisfactory, and only recently tried Factorio. There's something about Factorio that just doesn't quite hit the same notes for me though. I think it has a lot to do with the fact Satisfactory focuses not just on the factory, but on the world, exploration and building. There's so much more room for player expression in Satisfactory as well. My factory is now a huge structure with some thought to outward aesthetic design, even if on the inside it's sometimes still a mess of conveyor belt spaghetti monster.

It requires the least amount of brainpower to design and it doubles as transportation! Slide jumping on T5 belts gives you some insane speed. Admittedly there was that one time when I passed through an area where the collision was really fucked up and fell through the floor multipple times, but it was worth it in the end because I didn't have to think.

I played factorio and then satisfactory and honestly after 50 hours of satisfactory I really can't say I enjoyed much of it, yeah sure there's exploration but it's almost all barren, few little secrets here and there, factorio's gameplay loop is just so much more addicting and rewarding, satisfactory has no sense of urgency, you don't need to optimize other than your own will, factorio makes you want to optimize otherwise biters will come and break your shit. While satisfactory has ok exploration, the game severely lacks in the factory aspect, for me it's not rewarding at all, it's faster to craft heavy reinforce structures by hand than setting up a machinery for it, with sluts takes around 30 seconds and 250Mw why do that if I can craft quickly in 5 seconds or so? 1 body slot sucks as well, it's not like you'd be overpowered being that the rebar gun can kill things in 2 to 3 shots, so they have a lot of ironing to do I could explain my points better but it doesn't matter no one will read this anyway a

oh, another nice game in the same 'factory builder' realm that started early access since this video came out is Dyson Sphere Program, wherein your goal is to create dyson spheres around various stars by setting up logistics networks between their planets. Due to how dyson spheres work with energy generation, it gets exponentially easier to add more to a sphere as it is built, and once you have one fully constructed it makes it immensely easy to build another

While Satisfactory is in some ways a more chill game than Factorio, it does provide slightly other type of challenges and the size of the factory can be felt more. A relatively new entry to this genre is "Learning Factory" with a little bit different approach, and a big huge shout out for Dyson Sphere Program. I love this Interstellar logistics game almost more than Factorio and Satisfactory. I don't know which one I like best, so to me it is a shared 1st place between Factorio, Satisfactory and DSP for now. Not mentioned games are also Early Access, but especially DSP has quite a high level of polish and quality comparable to Satisfactory EA. PS(edit) : I saw you covered both in separate videos. Great work! 😉

Myself, I think TerraTech deserves an honorable mention. Granted, the game only has some elements of a factory game as most of the focus is on other things like exploration, building vehicles and completing missions and race tracks with them. While the factory elements are not as sophisticated, it actually does have some factory elements.

Kinda missing two games in this list. Not sure they are too far off of the factorio theme, but honorable mentions nonetheless. Also nearly 2 years too late, but hey, youtube algorithm, what can I say? - Astroneer: Super fun more exploration focussed game but has a lot of the same gameplay loops as the mentioned 3 games aside from factorio. There is a lot of room for automating a lot of things and definitely has my recommendations. - Screeps: Yes it's more focussed towards actual programmers and it's kinda annoying (perhaps even P2W-esque) to have to buy CPU cycles and server time for real, but it is also very fun and interesting. Also a great way or motivator to learn programming.

I personalny think that satisfactory is a masterpiece on itself, however the grindy part of unlocking things through the space elevator is really tiring and kind of ruins the experience for me. But the mix of genres is ideal, I mean it's one of the few 9/10 games that I enjoyed playing... The logistics based, gameplay had me engaged for hours, and at some point I just couldn't wait to get home from school to design a new piece of the spaghetti looking conveyor amalgamation. And then I stopped playing it because the various resources were too much of a hassle to get. It just was too much, you need like 400 modular frames made from thousands if other ingredients, It just felt like a chore. and everything I tried to make to run my factory faster resulted in a fail, because I somehow always lacked the materials, and even if I could make the upgrade it still was way to inefficient. It was a great game however I lacked the skills to make the factory good. Also thanks for reminding me of it, and how great it actually was. I'll make sure to take a second attempt at it and this time try my best to make it as efficient as possible.

Satisfactory with mods is endlessly more fun. I have a wireless power plant that runs unattended across the map. I never have to worry about fighting the native fauna to get resources for my power plant. I don't have to hundreds of powerlines strung across the planet. I also use a mod which lets me have "underground" conveyor belts. Within my factory, I have so many things going on at once that two many conveyor belts would just get in the way. I don't recall where I found the mod launcher, but if you can find, get it as it makes the game sooooo much better.
