Very nice! I do this with my s2s poncho tarp. I do a kinda modified holden/half pyramid that gives longer head to toe coverage

For the first pitch there is a tie out that you use about 3/4 of the way down the ridgeline. Is that on the Poncho by default or was it a later add? (I can't see it on the MLD site photos). Really enjoyed this video - thanks for posting.

I reached out to Ron at MLD and the tie out was deleted in the latest version (2021/2022).

Are you still using your poncho tarp as your 3 season shelter? I wonder if using mini-carabiners for attachment of your lines to the tarp would be more versatile? Yes, a little weight would be added but setup in bad conditions would be much quicker and easier to manage in colder temperatures.

I am! I considered this when first setting everything up, but ultimately landed on the knot system shown in the video for a few reasons: (i) mini-carabiners tend to fail if you don't baby them, knots do not (ii) to your point, there's a weight penalty (iii) although if I'm correctly picturing what you're describing, they should stay anchored onto your guylines when not in use, it's still several more little things to keep track of All that said, definitely a viable option, and pitching / takedown when it's actively raining with this setup is not fun... I've gotten pretty quick with the knots, but it'd probably always be faster to use 'biners. Happy trails!

@@willmarshall3245thanks for the reply. You’re right, knots won’t fail. I’ll have to try both methods and see which one I prefer. For a tarp only, definitely the Skurka method of knots makes more sense without question. Thanks again.

How did the poncho tarp serve you on the AT hike

It was great! I got really lucky with the weather in 2021 (with a stretch in Vermont and New Hampshire aside), so it made for the perfect shelter on a trail with plenty of shelters to bail to if things got too hairy!
