Great rant and completely agree with you! I’ve been lucky enough to enjoy Cubans from the late 90s through today and I have yet to find that unique Cuban taste profile anywhere else besides tobacco grown in Cuba. People forget to recognize that unique flavor preferences vary from person to person, mine happens to steer me towards true Cuban cigars, there’s just nothing else like them.

US smokers seem to prefer Nicaraguan sticks due to the fact that we really can’t get Cuban cigars here. But when we do they need aged 3-4 years before smoking cause Cuba churns them out so fast which leads to young flavors, horrible burns and an overall bad experience for the chase of them

As a fellow Cigar Aficionado I'm inclined to agree on the point that Cuba makes the finest cigars! However! When it comes to complexity and flavour new world has some of the best in my opinion. If I want some high quality tobacco flavours with notes of earth, grassy hay and pepper Cubans, all day long Cubans. If I want, fire smoke, coffee, chocolate and a really complex mix of naturally aromatic flavours some of the new world methods coming from Deadwood Tobacco, Kentucky fire cured etc. You just can't beat those for that type of experience. BUT I enjoy both and hold both in different categories. Sure they're both cigars but my Cubans are my premium smokes and my every day smokes will be... Ok my go to at the minute is Partagas but the new worlds are just as much a part of my cigar enjoyment as are my Cubans. Definitely a good discussion though and always an interesting point of conversation. Can't wait to see more. Subbed.

Although my favorite cigars are Cubans (as well as Aruban cigars which don't ship internationally so best of luck finding one)... I have never heard a worse argument in my life. * I hope I'm not the only one, but I had to listen to him say that Cubans are at a better priced than premium non-cubans on repeat because I couldn't believe my ears. * Everyone and their mother knows that Davidoff and Gurkha can be highly overpriced but I can literally spend about $11 USD and buy an 8.5 x 60 Double Ligero Digger by La Flor Dominicana, which is a great cigar, for less than any Cuban.. * Every time I went outside of the US and bought Cuban cigars, finding anything cheaper than $11 USD was an absolute challenge and when I did find Cubans that cheap, they were so small that they couldn't last 30 minutes to smoke and I had to scour to just to be able to find one without mold. * If I could buy a Cuban cigar at least as large as a Toro or even a Churchill for under $35 than maybe you would almost be able to have a valid point. But you're not even almost close at making a good point. Your like on Pluto with that take

Totally agree. It’ so funny when Cigar Aficionado claims to make blind tastings of cigars since you can tell which is a cuban one just by the colour of the wrapper and by the cold smell. That unique barnyard, leather, woodiness all wrapped in sweet honey aromas ... I saw many claims of thight draw but bear in mind that this is cuban tradition, cuban cigars have a tighter draw which is absolutelly normal. I guess over 90% of non cuban cigars are blended : dominican, mexican, nicaraguan, etc tobaccos whereas cubans are puros. No one cand match even close the complexity and uniqueness of cuban cigars. Of course, this is a very personal opinion

@@munkbok I believe i already responded to you but if you live in America then Cubans can not be bought or sold at all and you have to buy them outside the country. In America the Cohibas and Romeo y Julietas and other brands with the Cuban name are just a Re branded name of the original families who left from Cuba and came to America. So all the Cuban named Cigars are not Cuban at all but are just cigars harvested in the Dominican Republican, Africa, and other countries. There are lots of Dominican made cigars in America that taste very similar to Cuban ones though. I have a cigar stock that is hard to find for me now called Esteban Carreras Cubana Real Semilla Limitada Reserva which is very much just like a Cuban stick since it is a first generation seed and is grown in similar conditions

While I happen to agree that many Cubans are fantastic, you did not mention the elephant in the room which makes such a debate futile. It's no secret that Cuba cannot keep up with the huge demand. Just as Italy exports far, far more olive oil than it actually grows (meaning if you do the math, it's obviously not all Italian or even 100% real olive oil), the same exportation conundrum is found in Cuba. This means that Cuba must secretly import lots of non-Cuban tobacco to meet their quotas. This has been going on for some time and was especially evident after their last major hurricanes which destroyed so much of their production. Hundreds of tons of tobacco don't just fall from the skies but must come from somewhere. You will never know which specific factory is doing this or how much since Habanos keeps everything so secretive. If you have friends on the inside, you will know this is indeed happening and some of your beloved Cubans are as blended as any other non-Cuban ...but for 10x the price. Don't be so shocked. Wine producers quietly do the exact same thing all the time, especially since some years are especially bad for the growers and they need to "blend in some help" from elsewhere. Another elephant in the room is that most Cubans no longer can afford to properly ferment their cigars (like they did in the past) due to the insane demand. This means after buying a new expensive Cuban cigar, it likely still must be aged at least a year or two by you the consumer for its intended flavor profile! Whereas a company like Davidoff or Fuente has the luxury of having vast warehouses of properly aged tobacco so what you buy is ready to be smoked today. I don't know about you, but if I spend over 50 dollars on a single stick, I want to enjoy it this week and not wait several years. In the end, I say don't get too caught up where something comes from. All these countries produce both great and lousy cigars. If you like a particular flavor of a particular cigar brand, smoke it!

Excellent video! In Canada, cigars are outrageously over taxed. I smoked hundreds of cigars in my life. The vast majority of them was from the new world. I agree, no others cigars taste like Cuban cigars. But, the best quality price, you’ll find it in new world. I love some profiles of the new world cigars, that is impossible to obtain in Cuban cigars. I love them both. But for me, Cuba, is another country, just like Hondura, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic. They deserve to recognize, because if the can’t replicate the flavors of Cuban cigars, Cuba can’t replicate the flavors of theses country.

I started with cubans and 20 years later im still in love with them . I eventually ended up trying Arturo Fuente cigars and fell in love with them although in most cases are a completely different approach than the cuban. From there years after my humidor is 60% cuban 30% Arturo Fuente and 10% some other brand of new world cigar.... Im still in love with cubans cause they cubans!! The soil , the sun the tradition of fermentation in Cuba .... is just not comparable or i would say i could cheat on a cuban only with A. Fuente lol HOWEVER!! Cuban cigars unless u can get hold of old boxes like 3 years or 2 at least prior to the year of purchase.. or even longer if u lucky and have the money for it ... are not at their full potential and also you most likely goin to have issue with burn n draw .I do believe Cuban cigars need aging.infact when i buy a box of cubans i smoke 1 or 2 maximum the rest will go to the side to age.... in the meantime u can smoke some good new word cigars straight from the box , yes they different yes they can be stronger than cuban but they have their on flow n in most cases they also cheaper... i wouldnt venture into many new world brands as they are not for me at all but i tried a few that i consider to be really a good smoke... Aj fernandez is decent, Ashton has the hands of fuente behind some of the blends and also tobacco from tabacalera fuente, decent also... and a few others .

Absolutely. Cuban cigars are the best. There is no replicating the flavor. Fuente comes close, IMO. They are my favorite non cuban brand. But I dare anyone to smoke an Upmann, a Partagas, a Montecristo, and tell me it's not unique. It's the most premium tobacco in the world. Bar none. My only complaint is Habanos needs draw testers at every facility. Their rollers are consistently over packing the cigars, and it pisses me off. But hands down, they are the best. Hmm.. it's true that Cuban cigars' flavor is unique. However, Davidoffs are unique either IMHO. As Zino said, it is better to smoke great cigars instead of two poor cigars(talking about size matter you mentioned, not saying Julieta is poor, just I think late hour is better) But still I agree with you on Gurkha. They are craps. Even my kids hate to smoke it. LMAO However, I think you overlooked some sides either,, such as draw problems.. half of Cuban cigars have a problem usually (or at least one third of them) and that's definitely no no to me especially when we are talking about Cohiba or some Partagas. Anyway, if you are saying that cuban cigars are usually better on some sides then I would agree on you. Lastly, really liked your video :)

There was a time around 2015 where I thought, this can't be true. I smoked exclusively cuban cigars for 3 years until 2010, but then I stopped smoking cigars and just smoked a pipe. In 2016 I wanted to smoke cigars again, but I found out that the construction and the quality of the tobacco was so bad that I completely went away from cubans to the new world cigars. I still always craved that cuban flavor, but never got it again. Until, a few months ago, when I ordered a few cubans just to try how they are now, and bam, the quality was fantastic again. But now comes the bad part again. Almost every cuban cigar online is sold out🙉 and no one really nows when new ones come in. I was at least able to get a box of "R&J-Mille Fleurs", but that's it. Hope to find more at the local tobacco store, but I guess they will be sold out too. Darned you Covid😤

I love a well handled, well aged Habano, and I strongly disagree with almost everything said here lol For a number of reasons, but all in good spirits. I used to actually hold this position but I'm older, wiser, my palate is more developed, and I no longer think Cuban cigars are the best and doubt they ever were now. We all start with different cigars and all have very different palates so where we start, what we fall in love with, and the flavor profiles we lean towards will always vary so MUCH of this is entirely subjective, but I think you're even demonstrably off on the more objective parts as well. Much of the world craves that Cuban profile, the rest craves something else entirely, none are wrong. It's also just a given that people who started smoking in certain parts of Europe (especially English folks for some reason) will favor Habanos while people elsewhere are much more diverse, though I do know many Europeans who smoke mostly "New World". All regions have their own respective flavors. There are some that overlap but people can also generally pick out a Dominican, a Nicaraguan, a Honduran, etc, even details like the filler being Dominican and the wrapper being Cameroon or whatever, it's just a matter of of the person has sampled enough to know and has a developed enough of a palate to pick up on it. Yes, SUPER premium cigars like most of Davidoff, Opus X, Padrone's Anniversary and Family Reserve lines, Steve Saka's Unicorn, etc, are quite pricey, but overall premium handmades from everywhere but Cuba offer a far better value AND variety. There are fantastic $6-10 smokes out there and even when you move towards the high end few go beyond $16 and only a small handful are above $20. But at least when you pay that premium you know what you'll get every time, not so with Cubans. You have to look at the VERY overpriced or SUPER premium cigars to even compare lol Plenty of sites have both and it's not difficult to compare. Don't sleep on variety. There are a small number of brands to choose from to begin with and since all Cubans are Puros they all tend to have a good amount in common while "New World" cigars may be a puro or may have leaves from 7 different countries at play! You're never not going to be able to find something to smoke with the thousands of "New World" options while Habanos are quite limited. If it's not what you prefer you're SOL if most shops around you carry mostly Habanos. Quality Control and consistency is a nonstop problem for Cubans and it only seems to be getting worse by the year as online sites open up the US market. When I first started smoking cigars getting Cubans was the tricky part, and they had QC issues then too, but now it's just expected that a significant chunk of a box will need a draw tool, bare minimum. No "New World" company is anywhere near as bad. Even with a $6 smoke like the CAO Brazilia you got unlucky to have some kind of construction issues on 2 sticks, when I get my Bolivars and Hoyos in I'm prepared to have about 5 per box that may not even be salvageable and a few more that'll need attention/aid. There's no comparison. Then there's the age issue. Many Cubans are just not good, stink of ammonia, won't burn properly, and have off/offensive flavors on arrival where it's rare for even the cheapest "New World" bundle sticks. So it's necessary to either pay a premium for ones that already have some age on them or lay them down for a couple of years (or more) to get what you should be having right out of the box on arrival for the price. Not only am I paying more than average but I'm also having to store and maintain them. I will for some but why would anyone want to do this for everything they smoke? It's ridiculous. Almost every "New World" cigar is ready after 2 weeks to get the humidity right and while some might have slight and subtle improvements very few require aging the way Cubans do. They also don't come in cellophane and just about every precaution is skipped these days so mold and beetles are a constant threat even in good conditions. It's common for them to show up with mold. Barring incredibly bad storage it's just not as much of an issue for most "New World" brand because most use cello and take a good number of precautions to ensure mold and beetles are as unlikely as possible. And not having to age removes a lot of the issue, needing to have a cigar sit for years is a problem, a lot can go wrong in that time under the best care. The vast majority of "New World" cigars are mild, or mild-med. Always have been and probably always will be. That information is easily available for almost every cigar on the market lol If you're picking up powerhouses you can't then complain when you could've looked ahead of time and gone for any number of milder cigars. But I know people who puke on a couple of Cubans lines too so this is operator error, not cigar flaws. "New World" has more than a few options, if anything too many, but there's something for everybody unlike Cubans. What kills me is how many Habanos fanboys will deny this stuff like me and many others aren't experiencing it firsthand and it's not all over the internet lol I smoke a lot of Cubans and have been smoking for quite a few years (just south of 20), and dedicate a ton of time and effort to the hobby. I'm a certified cigar nerd 😂 A properly cared for, well aged Cuban can be bliss, but so can a brand new our of the box multi-country blend. When I want a Cuban nothing else will do, but when I want a Nicaraguan nothing else will either. I love Cubans but I also love a lot of other cigars too and I don't know many people who don't.

I don't think he has slept on variety. He explained that he also smoked new world. But most new worlds are very overrated. Ive been smoking over 30 years and still have not found a variety of new worlds that are better than the best Cubans..Just not a reality. I love Padron and Arturo Fuente. I think with New worlds you can't get much better. But even the top new world brands are all Cuban families who brought their knowlege to other places like Nicaragua and Dominican Republic ect... There would be no new world cigars if Castro would have been smarter. I wonder what the world would be saying then??? This is the question I always ask new world 'fan boys''...Facts are facts.

Lol, I've had my share of Ghurkas and some have been ok I guess. Problem I have with them is there construction. It sucks balls; everytime I smoke one it's like maning the sails on a sailboat or some shit...so much effort, touching up, canoeing etc...they just suck ass. I did have a Partagas De Luxe tubo the other day and it was flawless in terms of everything from begining to end.

The funny thing is this guy starts with Gurkha instead of something like AVO, Olivia, La Flora Dominica, or Padron. May want to try the “New World” Vs. Cuban cigar with something that has a bit of history behind it.

One thing that disappoints me about Cuban market cigars is the lack of innovation. Habanos has had the same dozen brands for 40 years. You get some regionals, and edition limitada but even these smokes aren't taking chances or exploring. I would love to see a brand explore the possibilities for blending new world tobaccos with Cuban. I think we are missing out on a huge potential for exotic refinement simply due to lack of Innovation.

I think of that more as a strength, to be honest. Solid background of the current lines, not too much flooding of the market with too many options, and maintaining their brands to customers who are familiar with the cigars and love them. Plus, it reduces the need to retrain people for a different ratio and vitola skill which can sometimes be hit and miss (see the RyJ Linea de Oro Nobles Vs the RyJ Belicosos)

The bad thing for me is the price. Cubans in my country are very expensive and i dont want to order online becausr if the authorities get it i have to pay 100% tax. I buy new wolrd cigars from the US and they are very cheap. I have around 4 favorites cigars . HdM E2 18 dollars Montecristo no2 20 dollars Oliva melanio figurado 8 dollars Rose of sharon 8 dollars I smoke new wolrd more because of tje price but every cigar haa its own flavor
