For me, I have a 2017 iMac which has a non-replaceable GPU. I've upgraded the CPU to the highest it can go, the RAM up to 32gb, only limited on the GPU. The Razer Core X Chroma has given it a new breath of life. I have been holding onto my current setup for the 5k IPS panel that comes with the device and if I run windows (Macos doesnt support nvidia), then I can play MW2 remastered at 60fps easily. Yes, its expensive for the enclosure, but I can now keep my massive 5k display without upgrading for a few more years

Loved the video and it hits the valid points on why you'd want an egpu. For myself, I always wanted ultimate portability in a light thin laptop with great battery life. I don't like thick chunky gamer laptops with RGB lights and bad battery life. This gives me the best of both worlds. With how cheap cards like the rx 6700 xt have gotten it makes it even more appealing than ever before.

I've actually been toying with the idea of getting a Core X for my Blade Advanced 2070 Super, so I can move to a 30- series without having to buy a whole new laptop. I live in Japan so a Razer Core X here is about $300, and a 4060 is about $320, so $600 to make my system somewhat future-proof. Meanwhile the cheapest new Blade 15 I can find here is about $3100. My Blade has kindof become a desktop anyway since I got my Steam Deck, so adding a Core might be the exact right move.

Finally a good video on these! Everyone seems to say don't get one. But they seem to ignore why someone may actually want one. For gaming and having an easy to move around laptop. Or a computer that could just some extra power but don't want to upgrade the whole computer. Like I kinda want one because I got a MacBook Pro and a iMac where it could really help boost the performance. However I also have a older gaming computer so I don't really need one. If they were cheaper than I totally would get one because it's easier to switch the iMac or MacBook into windows than to switch my monitors and keyboard over the gaming computer.

You could cram as much as you want into it, but without a way to keep everything cool, you're going to end up throttled regardless. There's only so much you can do with a laptop due to that. At best, you could try to undervolt as much as the computer will take and maybe use something like Throttlestop, but then you risk burning something up, either in the laptop or your lap itself. ''

@@InsidePlay2023 Whoever you talked to doesn't know what they are talking about. I'm not even sure they understood your question. An EGPU will not burn out your laptop unless it's defective. In terms of heat, things might actually run cooler since the dGPU and iGPU will not be used. In terms of performance,from the benchmarks I have seen, expect at worst 50% of a desktop numbers over TH3/TH4, though on average it's seems to be a 30% loss. What are your 3dmark numbers? Or Heaven's number if you want a free benchmark.

Hey i have a question thats been concerning me, lets say i have a laptop that has a 60 hz screen and i connect it to a 165hz monitor and bought an egpu that can run 165hz, would i be able to take advantage of the 165 fps?
@5after12

Yes on the external monitor. It of course can't make your 60hz laptop screen turn into 165hz, but the external monitor will work assuming your GPU is strong enough

Would it be possible to use this on a mini PC Minis-Forum HX99G, without sending power to it?

I would assume a mini PC needs power. Also that mini PC must have Thunderbolt

I see you forgot to mention the PCIe Lane speed out of Thunderbolt or USB4. Spoiler: it is not even 40 Gbps as advertised. It is more like 18 Gbps or 22 Gbps at best. Yes really inferior for such absurd price. Meanwhile other eGPU solution like M.2 Adapter, has actual adaptive speed depending on the PCIe Gen of the Laptop and the GPU itself. For example, if the Laptop has M.2 slot Gen 4, and GPU with PCIe Gen 4, the bandwidth is about 64 Gbps automatically without any adjustments. Waaaaay faster than Thunderbolt or USB4 at a mere fraction of the price. If the Laptop has M.2 Gen 3 and GPU has PCIe Gen 3, then the bandwidth is 32 Gbps. Still faster than Thunderbolt or USB4 for even cheaper price

i mention the PCIe speeds at 7:02 also, the eGPU subreddit loves talking about the m.2 adapter, but that is not realistic for most people, it is more of an enthusiast product. While it will perform better, it is a much less clean setup. You are going to have to basically open up your laptop and then have a part hanging out of it all the time. Most of the audience that this video is directed at will not be interested in a setup like that. Aesthetics certainly have a value, and part of what you are paying for with the Razer Core X Chroma (or any Razer product) is the look of the product and the clean setup. In this video I definitely mention numerous times that Thunderbolt would be a bottleneck of your performance. Also the Razer Core X Chroma does not advertise 40 Gbps, it only says it has Thunderbolt 3. While Thunderbolt 3 supports data-transfer speeds up to 40Gbps, Razer definitely does not claim those speeds are expected.

@@5after12 Also, many laptops only have one M.2 slot, so you'd have to run your OS and games off of an external drive in that case. That's of course all on top of the fact that you're taking away the biggest advantage laptops have over desktops, which is their portability.
