I’ve been an independent NYC event planner for the past 5 years. Now with covid, the events industry is over, so I’m thinking of going into wedding planning. People are still getting married, right? 😬

Hey there… I have been in a wedding coordinator since 2014. And the way that I started as I just looked at people who did wedding planning and coordinating. I expressed that I had much passion for this career field. If you would write back saying they didn’t need anybody at the time but one day someone wrote back and needed a intern. Which led into a steady job there for a while. So wedding decorations you would want to look up staging and maybe just send out a few emails and express how you would love to learn the trade.

First thing you need to do is go work for at least one wedding planning company for four years, learn the craft, learn the trade. I've been in the event rental industry for 27 years and 25% of all event planners are worthless, 65% are passable think C to C+ grades and only 10% are actually worth the money. Learn the craft first. Also planners are not designers, one does logistics the other does the creative stuff. They are not the same.

I appreciate the input. Many planners are not, in fact, designers, but there are some that DO wear both hats. I personally design all of my events. I do not produce, but I 100% design. And I believe in collaboration with my partners for florals, production, rentals, etc. But in the end, it's my vision that drives the process.

@@AndreaEppolitoEvents My fault I didn't make it clear. Most ladies do the wedding planning gig because they want to be designers, because that's what they think planners do. When in reality planners should be all about logistics etc., designers all about design. This is in no way a comment on your skills, this is just my long-term observation confirmed by multiple caterers and a few event planners. Many try and do both and either end up sucking at the planning part, sucking at the design part or sucking at both. Most of the women spend little to no time learning either craft and the client and vendors end up paying for it. These are learned skills. They take years to learn and most of the gals don't want to invest their time and energy into learning. Don't worry the event rental industry has a similar problem. Pretty much any rental company you find here on KZitem would be an example of what not to do.

@@edwo6648 No offense taken! I’m actually excited by the interaction and thought process. I agree that a lot of women and a few men get into this because they think it is easy or glamorous, or because they fall in love with the idea of weddings, and not the process behind the party. I also think that a lot of wedding planners are just checking boxes, and those jobs are going to become obsolete because there’s an app for that! I think some people can design, but not plan. Some people can plan, but not produce, and some people can build teams that make them very good at all three or any combination. There is a client for almost everyone and everything. And as a planner and designer, I know that I’m always grateful for my partnerships with rental companies and decor pros!
