In today’s video I’m going to show you a few quick ways to open a folding knife. You might know some of these hacks but I wanted to combine the best three into one video. I’m using three different folding knives because some methods work better on different knives, you’ll just have to try them out to see which is best for your particular knife. All three knives are regular folding knives. No springs or assists. The first method I’m sure you know but I have to include it for the few people who don’t. You want to use the thumb stud (or hole) to push the knife open slightly and flick your wrist to open it the rest of the way. With all of these methods make sure you have a good grip on the knife where your fingers don’t get in the way of the blade. Method 2, you want to use just your thumb to flick open the knife. Flick it at a 45 degree angle with a good amount of force. You can use the meat of your thumb or your nail to flick it open. Before I get to the last method I want to show you how to tweak your knives to open easier for any given method. Take a screwdriver for the particular screw, in my case it’s a star key. I’m just tightening it up a bit to allow enough force to be built up before it can open. This will take some finicking depending on your situation. I will warn you to not mess with this screw if you have a really expensive folding knife. Those are made with precision and messing with one screw can ruin your knife. I would only do this on cheap knives. Method 3 you only have to move your arm. You won’t need your fingers for this method. Push the knife up and sweep it down fast. The up force will open the knife enough so when you sweep the knife down, the inertial force will send the blade open. You can do it in any orientation. I flick my wrist slightly, but it’s not necessary to get this to work. Once the knife is forced open a little bit, changing the direction of the swing will allow the blade to swing on its hinge. All of these methods require a lot of practice to be efficient with them but that’s especially true for this method. If you get really good, you won’t need to move your arm much at all. I haven’t actually seen this last method done before so whether or not you knew this, leave a comment to let me know. Opening a folding knife is kind of like riding a bike: it's pretty hard at first, but with enough practice, you’ll build up muscle memory and you will be able to do it without thinking about it.
