I am indeed. Have some decent instruments already, but your recipe sounds fantastic. Have only assembled/stained/finished some guitars as of yet, but I really want to make a bass like your description (although i'm not too concerned about it being headless, but i will see how this develops). Looking forward to how you calculate the fret positions and angles, as this is obviously crucial. I think i would like to use the same scale lengths that Dingwall use, as I did try one once, briefly and really liked the feel and sound of that instrument.

Brilliant, looking forward to the rest of this series. I find it strangely satisfying peeling dried wood glue off my fingers.

I feel the pre shaping of a neck is a great idea for neck movement... As carving after removes quite a bit and can move. Using some support is not that bad when compared to the advantages (plus I feel it could also be more economical with your wood too

My biggest motivation for cutting the splines to shape first is that I don't really have a suitable bandsaw for cutting after! ...and also, I worry salt could make it worse if the two pieces start to slip before the salt digs in and then you're gripping in the wrong place.

I agree with the salt thing, I expect I’ll stick to my favourite Stopcut technique for future necks though!

Looking good so far Chris, I also tend to leave some material on the back for one piece necks. I think on a laminated neck blank like this the risk of movement should be reduced so it won't be an issue. However it's going to move it's going to move. Looking forward to seeing this take shape and can't wait to see what you have in store for GGBO 2022.

Hi Chris, is that plane a #4? Is it enough for this kind of board length? I'm asking because it's all I got, and I'm considering my options for the next build. Thanks!

If it’s what you’ve got then it’s perfect! Seriously, a No. 4 can do anything. Just keep measuring and checking for straight etc very few strokes 👍

And lay your plane sideways, or you F up your blade. Please

Nope! Don’t lay it down on a metal surface and you’ll be fine. And you won’t gash your hand on the blade either 👍
