woah, I found this ancient video today of a younger Thunderface back in the trailer park days. Wow how far I've come since this era - surroundings have changed, but the old f250 is still laying in down in 2024. 191k on the clock now! Since been married, became an engineer, and now live on a ten acre piece with a beautiful home and 6 buildings. These were dark days for me - I had nothing. Goes to show if you keep your nose to the grindstone, things do get better.

I had a 71 F-250, 390 4 speed granny low. The wheels were a little scary, 16 inch split rims. Only one shop would work on those, and he always wrapped the tire with a chain before airing it up. That was a good old truck.
@MaxGiganteum

He was a smart guy... though some guys used two chains or lowered a lift down very close over the tire & rim when pressurizing with air. When split rims let go, they can really let go. I divested myself of any split rims many decades ago just to make my own life easy. Best wishes! - Max Giganteum

@MaxGiganteum Hello Max, When I was a teenager I worked at an old fashioned gas station. I pumped gas, washed windshields, checked the oil, and air pressure in the tires. The owner did mechanic, and tire work. He would lower the lift on split rims before airing them up. He also did big truck and tractor tires. I can still see him standing on those big tires with a sort of duck billed sledgehammer breaking down those big tires. Those were the days. He taught me a lot of things. I worked up to oil changes, grease jobs, mounting and balancing tires, no spin balancer, an old bubble balancer, patching flats, and putting on tire chains. Good times.

@@lindanelson8400 Coolage... a gas station was my first "real" job. I did have a paper route as a kid, mowed lawns, picked berries and worked the farm but the gas station provided the first real paycheck. I too was a teenager. Unfortunately, I don't have a fond recollection of the station... it was OK at best if I worked at night with Eddie, the very fun and totally cool night asst manager but it blew during the day with the regular manager and full crew there. I pretty much was stuck with pumping gas, vacuuming out cars and putting them through the car wash. I did the basic checks too when the customer asked for them but I never got to work a garage slot. If I had, I might view my experience differently but as such, that is not the case. In the end, I was there around 7-8 months before I attained a better job but I do consider it a decent learning experience even if it was a shorter one. I probably learned many of the things you did on the farm though, doing regular maintenance and making repairs was SOP on the farm. Only the serious things were done elsewhere such as an automatic transmission rebuild on my mother's car. I'll bet the owner of your station was well versed in a great number of repairs or maintenance items and had a lot to offer to someone willing to learn. I would have liked to be able to do some of those same things back then... but I gained a lot with the various shop classes in public school and then a ton in college. Back in my time, shop classes in junior and senior high school still existed. Now it seems you'd have a hard time finding any of those same classes in a lot of the public schools as sad as it is. I suppose I should consider myself fortunate to have the opportunities that I had back then. One of my fondest memories was melting and pouring molten aluminum into a mould I made as a 12-year-old in 7th grade metal shop. These days, I suspect many of the folks at the various insurance companies would go into cardiac arrest if you even brought up the idea of having a furnace capable of melting metal available for students to use. I would laugh at my own thought if it wasn't somewhat depressing. Anyway, thanks for the memories and best wishes! - Max Giganteum PS The sledge you described was most likely a bead breaker... built for that one purpose.
