As i said about 2 videos ago, the fist thing you must do it´s trust your guts in order to decide if your health or your life (or your significant others) is in danger. If the answer is YES you have to strike first untill you ko the other person (or people) or break his will. In the other hand, as i said in another video, i wouldn´t kick in a street fight, would stick better to boxing, my suggestion if you could analyze (will feel really glad if you do so) will be faint jab step left sligthly forward right cross (note this is easy to score since the other person is out of position and you are out of his range attacking the angle) left hook and step back.

How dare you mock the "better be judged by x than be carried by y" saying!!! Disappointed in you Mr. Hurt... No but seriously. I think the saying is more about not spending valuable seconds and brainpower on defending yourself up to legal standards. Just do. Don't beat them to death, but otherwise don't think too much.

As an attorney I have to say this is maybe the first and only time I've heard a non-lawyer explain a legal concept on this hellsite with 100% accuracy. It's all about proportional reasonability. You sling a 2/3 out there and drop someone who was behaving in a physically threatening manner? You're walking. You then kick the shit out of that guy once he's obviously out of commission and crack some of his ribs? Enjoy being on probation after you plead guilty to a felony you can't possibly defend against. 10/10, totally correct, subscribed.
@UhYeahWhateverDude
2 жыл бұрын
You're walking, but not after you spend a couple days in jail. Cops will just arrest you the second someone presses charges and they will let the D.A. figure out the rest. Always happens. If you win the fight, you can be about 90% certain you are getting arrested. I've been in too many county jails for this exact reason to think I'm just going to drive away. The only hope is that the other guy had some type of weapon and witnesses can confirm that. That's the only way I've ever walked away without cuffs.

Give them your wallet." and "If you can run, run." There have been people he's met that did not go down even from a sucker punch and it got messy after that. Another awesome video Icy Mike! A similar situation to the one in the video happened to me a few months ago. the advice at 3:55 really works! I was waiting for the bus late night after work and some tall lanky guy says I stole his cigarettes and had to give them back or I owed him $10 for a new pack. My naïve ass tried to reason with the guy thinking it was a case of mistake identity because I don't even smoke cigarettes. I denied his allegations and told him he had the wrong guy but he kept getting more and more hostile saying I had to give him something because he lost his cigarettes he didn't care if I was the one who took them or not. Then he demanded him I give him my backpack and tried to make me flinch to provoke a first response or maybe just scare me into giving him what he wanted. I remained calm and tried to deescalate the situation until I saw his friend come out from the corner and they tried to surround me while I was sitting on the bus bench. Now that his friend was with him the first guy got even more aggressive telling me to give him my bag or else. I stood up from the bench and began to take my backpack off because I knew I was going to have to fight and didn't want to be weighed down or have my range of motion limited. The took this as a sign of me giving up and giving them that bag. So while I was removing my bag the friend spat on me, so I threw my bag at him and began to flurry him while his hand were full. We got locked up in a clinch and I just kept feeding him uppercuts and elbows until his friend tackled me from my blindside. The guy did not know what to do on the ground at all and I was still worried about the friend so I got back to standing ASAP. I'm not in the best shape so I was pretty gassed at this point so I played defense while he swung wildly and gasses himself. I got him locked up in a clinch when he was tired too but I scanned for his friend not wanting to be tackled again and saw him running off with my bag. So I'm pissed my bag is gone and I think its a 1vs 1 fight now so I start unloading from the clinch landing heavy blows against someone I'm sure has never spent a minute in a martial arts class. Then out of know where I feel a big ass bag come flying into my face as his friend came back around through the bag at the back of my head to get me to let go of his friend. Then they both ran away and I got to keep my bag. Moral of the story is throwing accessories at people really works! Also this whole event took place at a fairly busy transportation center with over 30 onlookers. Could you please do a video if you haven't already on how to overcome the "bystander effect" and get people to help you in a dangerous situations where everyone just sits back and watches.

Excellent! You are totally correct. If he's making threatening gestures or verbiage at you, that's "assault." The "battery" is when he strikes at you. Waiting too long to hit him, after he's made his intention known is a crucial mistake. Strike first, fast, and hard, if you know its "going down." The guy to get the first substantial 'shot' in is usually the winner.

Exactly what I used to teach as a Defensive Skills Instructor with Essex Police in the UK. I was not a martial artist. Being able to justify that first strike, which might be the one that saves your life, is important. It was never an excuse to beat someone up. There are many ways in which you can justify reasonable force. Age difference, i.e. you are 60, being attacked or threatened by a much younger person. Size difference. Whether you are carrying an injury, or a disability. The fact that maybe, you can't run away. The main thing to say to yourself is, who is going home to their family? Me or him?

Do you have old hand injuries? If not, I say get a Makiwara board and do 200 Punches on it a few times a week. Don't go crazy, you're not trying to break the board. Your goal is building up Impact tolerance. Go soft at first, then once you're comfortable, start striking slightly harder. And hold it there, feel the vibration of the board. Don't do a pentrating strike and quickly pull away.

Is it true that someone cornering you or getting threatening with you verbally and breaching your personal space constitutes as assault and "permits" you to throw the first punch?
@chi7818
4 жыл бұрын
words alone can't be assault, it has to be paired with intent and the ability to carry out said words. like if I say i'm going to kick your ass that's not assault. if I then raise my fists and take a fighting stance that can be considered assault. as for throwing the first punch I believe it still has to be in self defense and that goes back to the reasonable person thing. basically if you got any reasonable person and put them in the situation would they feel threatened. it doesn't matter how threatened you feel if the details of the situation don't let a reasonable person feel threatened as well. if it passes the reasonable person thing then it can be considered self defense. for example if the person was bigger than you cornered you in an alley then yeah punch away. if the person is half your size like 120 years old and is barely able to stand then no. oh and like he mentioned, you have to stop immediately after the threat has passed. if you do anything after that then it's no longer self defense. I'm not an officer or lawyer or anything but I was on a jury for a case of a man brandishing a machete in self defense a few years back and let me tell you they go over everything. the clothes the guy was wearing, how he approached, the actual words that were said literally every detail they could possibly come up with in order to paint a picture of the situation for the jury so they could determine if they were in the same situation would they also feel threatened. they focus a lot on the reasonable person thing and the prosecutor will go out of his way to make the defendant look guilty as hell since that's his job.

Great video, as always. Legal considerations are all to often overlooked by many self-defense and martial arts instructors. Nice Bunkai, by the way. Bunkai is a karate term which is an application of a technique. A hook punch can also be a clothesline and a setup for a head control.

- I am about to watch your video but this brings to mind what I was taught during my 10 years in Jujitsu. The Arm's Length rule. Basically we'd make a warding gesture as a way of telling the person to calm down but it also allowed our hands to stay up in case we needed them. If the person comes within touching distance it means they're already committed and we can attack at that point. No waiting until the guy shoves you, bumps your chest, or gets in your face because by then it's very difficult to stop a sucker punch. - I've actually been using that flick kick you're referring to at 02:39 on the heavy bag as a set up to a punch under the assumption that they'll instinctively move their head forward just like that. Thanks for confirming that it's a decent idea for a set up. I no longer practice the martial arts anymore but that's one setup I still play with at the gym. - 04:35 you are so right about idiots claiming they'll just shoot and kill the person. I really, really don't want to kill someone over a potential fistfight. Not when I have other options (diplomacy, grappling / striking, pepper spray, that whip you were showing in the other video, etc.). Obviously any encounter can be deadly, of course, and it's not always easy to discern just how far the aggressor is willing to take the situation.

I agree 100%. My test is when I repeat my actions and the events back to a judge, how will this sound? I'm older now and I will not wait for some strong, fast, young guy to hit me 5 times before I hit back. I can't. If I feel seriously threatened, they get words first and a chance to walk away. (don't want any trouble, come on man, what's this about?). As they start to respond or move forward... then as many hits as I can get in. Until they stop moving or I am exhausted. I'm all in. All or nothing. No action until a reasonable person would start to question why I am not doing anything, then switch. What's the first thing you hear from a cop who just shot and killed an unarmed man? "I was in fear for my life." (and they seem to be afraid a lot) Works for the cops. Also anything you say will be used against you, which is why people just repeat the same non comment over and over. Better answer is "lawyer". Repeat that.

I got attacked by a guy and I left him with 2 swollen eyes. He kept attacking me to the point where I was walking backwards while delivering my punches to this face. He filed charges against me and I got 40 hours community service for it :( A few years later I heard the same guy spend 3 years in prison for severely beating up his neighbor. Karma works but I still lost trust in the justice system.

I had an untrained person throw a wild hook and I slipped it and came up with a solid stance and a calm demeanor and the guy immediately reconsidered and I now think of him to be a guy I small talk with now if I see him around my area of town. I think he thought he’d punch me once and then whatever he was up to would be vindicated by a psychological trial by combat sort of thing. I remember when I first got serious about mma and the very first thing that became obvious was that I may or may not be as tough as I thought but to how unhelpful raw will and “toughness” is against trained and that I’m at a substantial disadvantage while intoxicated regardless of how I felt and at 23 years old this was a revelation as I was pretty scrappy during my military time and I look back from 40 and think how a lot of it was luck that I didn’t come up against well trained in my misadventures

This is great especially if you get that clinch. It can actually be a good whip clinch which allows you to throw knees to the face. You can throw hooks and uppercuts with your dominant hand, you can shoot in for an under hook and hip toss them, snap the head and go for a wrestling takedown, pull guard, get an over hook snap and drop your weight for a front headlock and get the guillotine off the bat. This unlocks so many different things.

Tossing something at an another person is basically an odd feint. It gives you a brief chance to act while they are thinking about your hat or glasses unexpectedly heading towards their face. Works if you aren't obvious about doing it.

I agree with you sir. Walking/running away after the threat is gone is the best choice. It's not badass, but it beats going to jail with excessive force, even though you're supposedly being the good guy or defending yourself.

In Canada, someone blocking your way does NOT constitute aggression so, therefore, throwing the first strike makes you more the aggressor. Unless you are ABSOLUTELY sure they are going to physically attack, you best not get physical yet.

That throwing the hat was good .i went to a commmando exhibition once and the instructor ( in full uniform with a beret ) said to us i am going to show you guys how to defend against a gun or a knife .We thought no way .He called for a volunteer from us and gave him a fake pistol .He was not that close to him. He put his hands up in surrender , and then threw his beret at the volunteer. The sevond the volunteer ducked he was on him and had him on the ground .He said its instinct to duck especially if you are not expecting it.

You are the face of the self defense community. There are other good youtube instructors, but they take themselves and their craft way too seriously, and because of that they are bleak and they make it sound as if we all live in some Mad Max dystopia where gangs of roving marauders are lurking behind every corner trying to pillage and murder us for the lulz. Your light tone and good sense of humor makes a huge diffrence.
