This highlights just how incredible Ken Warby's achievement was. Built his own boat, in his shed from wood with only a few power tools & his record still stands today. RIP Ken.

Ken Warby died a week ago but he has left behind a new boat. Spirit of Australia II. Its ready to take on any new record attempts. Sadly this record has taken the lives of many brilliant, wonderful people.

Darwin award winner pilots this. No amount of technology and design superiority stops a dolphin from farting and upsetting the water enough to kill him. There's no reason for a pilot. Make it pov piloted.

I have designed many models which were seriously fast. I have spoken to many powerboats besigners. Once I spent a few hours discussing designs with Fabio Buzzi. A few months later, the Bat Boat style racing boats the design of which we discussed appeared. Thunder child II by Safe haven marine is a parallel development of a model I designed over 40 years ago.

2:20 this was a pretty good design. why was there a crash. i suspect that this original design did not actually need much modification. you may know that any time the thrust line and c-m cannot be optimally configured, the use of a bit of thrust offset is 'needed'. for examples, see the exhaust angle of an a-10 or f-4.

No-one knows because the wreckage was never recovered, but it's suspected that the front planing step collapsed as that had been damaged during trials before.

I can understand the reasons for building scale models for testing, apart from the fact that the undulations of the water (ripples, waves etc) will not be the same on a scaled down craft as a full size craft. This is by no means a criticism, just a question. How do you simulate the actual effects of the water surface on a scale model? Great project, will definitely follow it.
@WellingtonIronman
Жыл бұрын
You can't really, but then you also can't scale air density either, yet wind tunnels are still extensively used. The idea is less to 'test' the idea, and more to ensure correlation between computer simulation expectations and real life.

information the wisdom/efficacy of using relatively large vert-stabs is uncertain. most of the longitudinal stability of this boat will be from hydrodynamic Drag, occurring at points near the stern; eg., feet, rudder, skegs, strakes. a reverse pickle-fork configuration might work best; instead of yer four-feet design.

Fancy expensive model coffin. Im all for doing great things but this makes no sense. All the tech in the world cant guarantee to keep the water smooth. At 350mph it will take almost nothing to disrupt the boat. Not survivable. Build the boat. Make it a drone. Don't kill someone with it please. Or get a politician to drive it at least.

@@daveworthing2294 the history of water speed records suggests that it's really really worth having an experienced boat person at the wheel. The people who thought experience with speed on land was good enough all died in the attempt. I'd love to see somebody fit a top fuel drag boat with a turbine that could run all day and see them build the speed on full mile runs, I think that would be super informative, particularly for the driver.

It’s a dangerous game over 300mph , with Ken Warby’s sad passing & still the being current record holder , any knowledge & secrets of success being passed to his son David & his new boat Spirit 2 with plenty of real world testing , yet no attempt so far . The only other 2 attempts to beat Warby’s record , firstly by Lee Taylor & later Craig Arfons ending like sir Donald’s , complete disasters & 3 deaths. You will need way more than just the engineering & development knowledge including boatloads of luck.

information a boat does not have a cg. compare c-m. center of mass. 6:31 this stern design is NOT a good one. because, it will make More aero- and hydrodynamic DRAG, than a tapered stern. any water rising away from the boat forward-of the transom is a source Drag. the Causes of rising water Should be Identified and their affects minimized. the nose (which won't be in the water) should be shaped like a BULLET/radially symmetrical; not like the prow of a boat.

I don't think this is a good hull design,that front looks like it will cause the boat to blow over.If you really want to go fast look at Top Fuel Hydro, Unlimited Hydro or Open Cat !!!!!!!

Agree. They are grifting and it will never be built, but it looks like a lot of the more modern designs that don't get built. Hallet style hydros are the only thing that seems to work. Examples being Hustler and Spirit of Australia.

I second Top fuel hydro/ Unld hydro. That current hull design doesn't look like it's 300+ MPH Complient. I think you need to go with a Cat design with a Fwd. Canard coupled to a air vaine sensor and computer and gyro to control the nose pitch up/dn. Cheers.

No no no no.... bad design. You want a wing with variable FLOW THROUGH. A bullet, once unstable, turns sideways. You are making a bullet boat. You need to think differently or the driver, captain, pilot will become another Donald. Listen
