So after a lot of debate about the ‘cosmetic’ roof rails MG UK have tested them and decided to put a cautionary 35kg load capacity rating for them.
I’ve fitted the same Thule supports and cross bars as on my MG ZS ev and they fit well (photo of the parts at the end of the video).
Once tightened up bridging the gap between the roof mount and the rail the whole rack system becomes much stronger. I feel this is going to be fine for my use and will do a proper road test soon, lockdown is stopping play time at the moment, I may strap my surfboard on and buzz around locally as a mini test though.
Please note this is just a quick video following the announcement from MG regarding the 35kg capacity, obviously carrying stuff up top is your responsibility not mine or MG.
This is MG's latest stance on the Roof Rail-Gate
‘It is our belief and we hope to be able to confirm very shortly that there is no concern with carrying weight on the car’s roof. But until we have satisfactorily validated this we do not wish to confirm it.
‘In the meantime, while this approval process concludes, we are happy to allow MG5 EV customers use of our ZS EV electric model free of charge and as a gesture of goodwill if they need to carry a roof load on their vehicle and they should contact their supplying dealer to arrange this.’
