1977 hitched a ride through the Otera on a jigger at 20 miles per hour with a Dutch cuisine. Got off. climbed through bush to the road and we jogged up and over the Pass. The Rata were in full bloom that happens twice a decade. I can't recall if it was running up a two thousand foot hill or the beauty but it took my breath away.

Great shots, the only train running on the day I chose to film was the TranzAlpine and the rain did not stop all day.....Tim.

Awesome footage. I was up that way not long ago but there was a sign saying no entry to the road that leads up to the west portal. How did you get there without having someone come and hassle you? Did you get some sort of special permission or?

Quite possibly there is an Otira in the north. There is only a finite number of words in Maori so they have to keep using the names again and again. Maori were some of the first recyclers, you can see this in the way they keep using the same names for several places.
