Thunder Over Louisville kicks off three weeks of partying in the run up to the most exciting two minutes in sports - the Kentucky Derby. Six hours of air show followed by the biggest annual fireworks display in North America.
The poor weather this year was really a blessing in disguise. Sure it was cold and windy which made being outside for 8 hours slightly uncomfortable, but it was a fair trade for light crowds in the premium viewing areas.
I was lucky enough to post up on the sidewalk surrounding the Great Lawn on the Louisville side of the Ohio River most of the day, while still maintaining base camp with all the fixin's back at Slugger Park.
Thing I learned this year is to perform some audio tests early in the day, 'cause by the time we made our way to what we thought was a good spot to watch the fireworks, it was too late to move when we discovered we were the bullseye at which they aimed a towering set of speakers.
So be warned that at times the audio is downright annoying. I did my best to mix the volume when possible, but couldn't overlay music because that would have meant sacrificing the thunder, which would have been - well, some kind of criminal youtubeian oxymoron or something.
While the volume of the music was too loud the fireworks themselves were pretty impressive this year. Lots of shapes and colors, and hearts seemed to be a recurring theme.
Don't be fooled by the Baby Grand Finale at the 7:30 mark, the real thing follows shortly thereafter.
Enjoy!
