Apologies everyone - the narration gets the broadcast date wrong. It should say January 1966 - not December.

I've always felt that the episodes benefitted from being expanded, and 'City of Fire' is a prime example of this. The sub-plot with the fire-cutting gas and the addition of the Firefly really builds on the action and tension of the rescue. 😎

These videos are wonderful. As a 67 year old, these puppet shows were highlights in a fairly mundane and exceedingly low-tech childhood. The best kids tv shows by a country mile. Wonderful that you have explored and shared this history. Still upset about David😢 Graham.

I think City of Fire is the best executed outing of the Mole. In Pit, with the difficulties of getting it out of the pod to start with, the rather clumsy way it burrows in the ground and how it just pops out of the soil inside the pit looks kinda goofy. And in Duchess it being shown to emerge into the basement which is WAAAAY too large for the scale of the vehicle. City of Fire really made the Mole look big and powerful, the initial burrowing is slow and laborious but nonetheless relentless, and when it emerges in the corridor, the image of it cracking open the concrete floor and the pieces of concrete getting flung by the drill really gives a sense of the power of the machine.

The first episode where I became convinced that Brains is a psychopath that is trying to off the Tracy boys to collect the inheritance. Why did he even put the dangerous cutting gas in the pod when it wasn't properly tested and had literally knocked the boys out. It all adds up to murderous intent to me lol

I heard Matt Zimmerman once say he started voicing characters on Thunderbirds from Sun Probe onward, so it could be that Ray Barrett was the original voice for the controller before they had Zommerman dub over him when it was expanded, and just forgot one line. It kinda ties in with Pit of Peril too, as the voices Zimmerman did were of characters presumably when the episodes were expanded.
@century21films28

@@TaylorZanderFrancis No it definitely isn’t that, because that scene is not in the half hour episode. And it would be insane to redub an entire character. This is a business after all and every change costs money. Sun Probe was likely recorded the same day, so he would be right.
@century21films28

Characters changing voices happens elsewhere in the show, and in other series too. It’s more likely to be a mistake at the recording session.

The dedication of your hatred towards the Carter family is admirable. One thing I notice about this episode is how different the Mole’s emergence from the pod differs from Pit of Peril. In Pit, they’ve bent the sides of the platform the drill sits on outwards to lower the overall height of the vehicle, and even then it can barely squeeze out of the pod door and down the ramp. In City, the pod and its door are significantly larger and the Mole at full height just rolls out with barely a hiccup and much more satisfying engine sound for such a large vehicle. I’d really like to know when they changed the size of the pod door because it does change, as does its relative size to the pod.
@century21films28

@@idontlikeitproductions3509 It’s the same size in that film strip from the 1964 City of Fire though - which we only found yesterday afternoon so just managed to squeeze in.
@idontlikeitproductions3509

@@century21films28From the looks of it, it seems that early on, the pod’s interior wasn’t set dressed for the external shots of vehicles emerging, they just emerged from the dark interior. It seems that the size change coincided with the addition of interior detail for the external shots. I almost wonder if the difficulty with the size of the Mole prop in Pit contributed to enlarging the pod set in later eps.

In "Pit", The Mole literally fetches up on the top of the pod door, which sends it twanging out onto the ramp. Would have been expensive in real life.
