Thuraya SatSleeve is really a game changer in the satellite industry.

Not really considering most people who use sat phones tend to be in harsh conditions that would destroy a regular civ phone in minutes like sailors or people on jungle expeditions ect

For those environments there is Thuraya XT handset. SatSleeve is for leisure, like for people going on hunting, going offshore on boats, etc.

Talal Masood I have a sat phone for work and the costs are insanely high but i do believe one day sat phones are going to take over and kill off cell phones

@@ColonelBragg The costs are high because there's only 4 main companies offering a connection, which are Iridium, Globalstar, Thuraya and Inmarsat... If there were more competition, the prices would come down. Elon Musk is trying to achieve this...

Is this the only android phone you can use the Thuraya with? Or do you HAVE to have a Samsung Galaxy? For instance, will it work with an HTC One? Also, can the battery be charged using the Powermonkey Extreme?

This device sounds fantastic. I want one! What is the speed of the data in satellite mode and also how much does the satellite service subscription cost?
@Funkteon

About $4 USD per megabyte and it's slow as fuck.. It's for emergencies only, when getting your ass saved is priceless..

@@Funkteon thanks for the info. I didn't expect this to be anywhere near as fast as 4G but if it was at least reasonably suitable and useful for email & uploading JPEGs etc I think I'd be happy. Does it at least compare in any way to 3G speeds?

It has 64 kbits down and 15 kbits/up. You can send whatsapp text message or make a google searche. For the rest, its too slow.

Here's a "great" idea! Let's make a rugged, professional grade stellite module that only works if you mount a consumer grade, unreliable smartphone that can easily get damaged in the kind of environments that a normal stphone is designed to work. And the best part is that unlike a stand alone satphone, the smartphone has a shitty battery life so that it will let you down if you're not near any plug socket.

Stupid comment. Sat sleeve extends battery life of device. If you want rugged buy a rugged dedicated Satphone. If you don't, buy this.

Steve Powell Even if it has a buit in battery to charge the phone please tell me: How is it a stupid comment? Why would anyone want to combine a professional grade device with a consumer grade one? It's like taking an expensive DSLR body and mounting cheap lenses on it. Please give us a reson why this is a good idea. Genuinely curious.

ronettreker First of all, both items are consumer grade, neither is military or government spec - most Sat phones are not..and most Satphones can be broken just like any mobile phone. Second, the phone featured here does very little apart from instruct the SatSleeve via an app - there is nothing detrimental to the end result by this design....in fact there are many advantages to being able to use all your apps and have a data connection anywhere. This is the kind of advancement that should be celebrated.

I wasn't talking about military grade...tat's an overkill... but professional grade. Most satphones are design to withstand much more abuse than a smartphone(not alll of them). About the role of the smartphone, if you don't mount a smartphone to it you can't operate it so the smartphone plays a big role in using it, Another big dissadvantage to it is the fact that it's designed to be mounted on a speciffic phone so if that phone is discontinued(doesnt take much time) the module is kind of useless.

Steve Powell Have a data connection anywere? You're perfectly right in that perspective. But making a stand alone satphone with a build in router sounds like a much better design than this. If you have a normal satphone with a built in router you can connect multiple smartphones/tablets/laptops, and even if one of those not so reliable devices fail you can still use the satphone as a stand alode device. The phone case design of this module doesn't make any sense, it's nothing more than a markething thing.

can the Satsleeve app do hotspot ?
@Funkteon
3 жыл бұрын
That's technically what it's already doing when the phone is resting in it.. However, because the internet and phone calls are being provided to your phone via the WiFi of the SatSleeve, you cannot then hotspot to another phone from the phone in the sleeve..
