Ray Moore was the go-to voice behind the menu trailers from the early 70s to 1988. Richard Skinner was one of several Radio 1 & 2 DJs who deputised. The late 70s and early 80s saw Simon Bates semi-regularly behind the continuity mic. "Simes" even did the opening "The News at 5.45... with..." for ITN. By the mid 80s Ken Bruce, Alan Dedicoat and Charles Nove were on the roster for occasional continuity duty. Nove and Dedicoat becoming regulars in the late 80s.

If I'm remembering things right, BBC1 showed exclusive UK live coverage of Northern Ireland v Austria in rhr second phase of World Cup 1982 that afternoon - it finished 2-2. Those early-evening and late evening editions of 'World Cup Report' were a regular thing back then, whereas an early evening highlights/report programme in its own right just wouldnt do nowadays.

It was the first cup England had played in for 12 years, so the BBC and ITV were hoping for England to go all out and try to win. Didn't happen and England went home after the second round.

Not quite sure why the BBC decided that The Jellicle Ball from Cats would be a suitable theme tune for the World Cup.

Maybe they were too lazy to commission an original one, unlike ITV.

It was cheaper to use library music (and pre-composed music I guess).
