I have to say that I really like my Thursday captains. The women's model also has the goodyear welt construction. When I resole, they will get Dainite soles. You did a nice job with this pair and it was good to get a glimpse of the inside. Thursdays are made in a town in Mexico well known for hand made shoes and boots. I also have a pair of Tecovas and I think they were made in the same town.

Typically the toe on shoes and boots takes more wear than other parts. So a toe plate is installed with a harder material, so it last longer allowing you to wear the shoes till it should be resoled again. For whatever reason, the owner puts more abuse on the toe portion, since the original boot’s sole still had a fair of amount of life except for the toe.

Some people wear out the toes fast when they walk due to toe drag and because of that it can get costly to have to keep resoling the boots or shoes just from the toes wearing out while the rest of the sole still has plenty of wear. So the to plates help with that.

The stitches still hold (along with the glue) after they're worn off the surface of the sole. I just counted, and have seven pairs on Dainites, Barker, Tricker's, Crockett & Jones, Loake and Cheaney. None of them are channeled, but all holding up very well. All except the Cheaneys appear to have been sewn with a bit of tension on the thread so it's slightly recessed though. I assume it's hard to make a nice even channel in the rubber or something, but the welting still works. But yes, I wonder why it's not done.
@devonchung1918

@@thomaslutro5560 yes the glue still holds we enough, it just seems to me if the stitches have worn through, they’re not doing anything... I suppose with modern glues it doesn’t really matter
@thomaslutro5560

Stronger modern glue may of course be the explanation. But as I understand it, there's a good bit of friction hold where the stitches go through the leather or rubber of the sole, so it provides a kind of 'strain relief' for the glue. I'm not a shoemaker or cobbler, so a pinch of salt with this. Would be nice if someone with the knowledge could comment as well.

The stiches on my Cheaney Tweeds have been gone for more than a year, at the toes and on both sides by the ball of the foot. The toe cap would have hidden the exposed stiches at the toe, but not on the sides. And since the soles are still on with absolutely no issues, I still don't see the point. The stitches still hold, along with the glue, even after they're worn off the outer surface. If anything, it would make far more sense to actually channel the soles, and recess the seam so it's protected by the surrounding rubber. And I'm struggling to see the cool in unnecessary detailing.
@kananikaa7164

That second-week point I mentioned was when you could see separation and catch it on things. Thursday's outsole isn't the best-there are videos describing and showing the toe rubber being gone from the boot. As such, I got the Dainite for the straight upgrade that it was As for the "cool in unnecessary detailing," everyone has their own opinions-but I just wanted it. I could see why you wouldn't, though.
