I remember being at an audio show as a teenager. One room was playing a THX demo laserdisc with short clips from Return of the Jedi and Indiana Jones. The sound I heard from that THX system got me into a hobby I love still, three decades later.

I bought a secondhand THX certified Logitech Z-5500 5.1 system for my parents the other day. They were listening to the built-in speakers in their smart-tv which were absolutely terrible. They were really happy with the improvement. Can't think of a cheaper THX certified 5.1 system with 10" subwoofer for $120. Talk about bang for buck!

Agree with DD. Zero on processor most certainly sounds much higher than 85db.

I have THX certified power cords. Use them on everything. My toaster works so much better now. Clearly I'm being a dick, THX definitely means you're getting as good as it gets. My THX certified components are amazing. I couldn't help taking a poke at the guys who think their power cord is going to improve the sound of their system. But you know buying an audiophile power cord for my bass amp really improved my playing. Jimi Hendrix's real secret was his Audioquest power cord.

Although I’m no fan of questionable “audiophile” gear, I’m definitely impressed by the marketing sophistication of these companies. Most importantly, it’s not like they’re selling bogus cures or literal snake oil. It’s no different than a gold toilet or $1000 perfume targeting people who don’t really care how much they spend.

I hate presentations like this. He never answered any questions really. So boring and just some prepared corporate speech and he didn’t know how to answer anything outside the slides. Plus, he was so boring.

Thank you for this great and interesting discussion! That deserved a subscription from me. 👌 And actually it's great timing that I found this bc you were saying that you would need to review an Onkyo receiver sometime. I'm actually starting my home theater and I'm trying to decide between 2 AVRs. One is the Onkyo TX-RN6100 and the other the Denon AVR-X2700H. The Onkyo is THX certified but the Denon got the beloved Audyssey. From what I've read is the AccuEQ and Accu Reflex from the Onkyo really bad. What advice could you give me or what would you suggest I should choose? THX is great, but then I'd need to get another TV (LG 55CX6 atm) and I don't think the Xbox or PS5 isn't certified for blu-rays. Would even make sense to start with collecting THX? Thank you for any help with this! Love from Germany 😊

I have an Onkyo TX-NR6100, with supposed "THX Select" certification. It self identifies reference level as 82.5dB out of a possible 95.5, assuming that "absolute" volume display is a dB rating. It also has a habit of audibly distorting (crackling) in loud scenes at reference level on some of the various streaming platforms like amazon video (4k DD or Atmos content). If I turn down 5-10 clicks (.5dB steps) it goes away. It is not the speakers as the woofer cones are barely moving during these scenes.

The question is whether THX certified speakers are atmos compatible. I mean THX speakers have specific specifications for vertical and horizontal sound dispersion. The question is whether it is compatible with dolby atmos sound

@@THXLtd I'm happy to hear that! Back in the 90's, I only purchased audio equipment that was THX Certified. Some of it still in use today! I hope you DO make a comeback. The home theater technology is moving quickly. Finding any type of certification is next to impossible. The best we consumers can do is get informed on products from channels such as Audioholics. Back in "the day", if equipment was THX Certified, you had a really good idea that it was top-tier, and would not disappoint. I hope THX can return to that level of certification. I'm now keeping an eye on your progression for getting more equipment THX Certified. For example, the THX website only shows two brands of THX Certified A/V Receivers (Integra and Onkyo). I really wanted to see the new Yamaha A/V Receivers out there, as I plan on purchasing the Aventage RX-A8A when it becomes available. Best of luck to you guys!

I wish I would have watched this steam live on 9/2 because I had a question about the Pioneer Elite SC-05 receiver that used to be in my a/v setup in my home theater. It has a THX Ultra 2 badge but the funny thing is it turns out it doesn't handle 4 ohm speaker impedance very well. And I would love to know how the Kenwood Sovereign power amplifier for there processor/amp set up received THX certification. I remember Kenwood bringing a demo room around the Circuit City's or maybe it was Best Buy in a semi trailer. I stayed after the demo and the rep or whom ever did the demo confided that the demo was not actually using the Kenwood power amplifier but a different brand and it was set up hot. That being said the THX program all in all IMHO was still good for home a/v.

Is there a reason why the Onkyo RZ50 has the THX certification and the Pioneer LX-505 does not? Apart from cosmetic differences, they are basically the same receiver.

THX won’t tell you the requirements, as it’s a service they charge for, and they worry speaker companies will make a speaker that meets the requirements and will say “passes THX Ultra certification” without paying to have it tested by THX.
