Play. This. Loud.
Man, this is a hell of a song. It's heavy, isn't it? The bass bottom end. Ringo's tom work, and that high-tension snare. And of course, those jangly guitars! My god, what a record.
I wanted to start obviously with a huge note of respect for "Ably House." I almost didn't cover this, their cover is so good (see here: • Ticket To Ride | Guita... ). They did a great job picking out those buried Paul noodles, and their transcription of the bass part - again, surprisingly complex - is stellar.
I think my biggest contribution to the mountain of "Ticket To Ride" tributes is the rhythm guitar. In perhaps one the most notable deviations from the record vs. live performances, I found that John alternated between the A and D chords during the verse. Hear it yourself: • The Beatles - Ticket T... . I bet you now can't unhear it!
Also, obviously, please welcome my Sonic Blue Fender Stratocaster! Something about the combination between the Strat and the Rickenbacker 360-12c63 is damn magical. Sounds just like 1965, doesn't it?
Trivia
- Recorded on February 15, 1965, in a stunning 2 takes. Tracked in the same session: "Another Girl" and "I Need You." Dudes were productive!
- A really great quote from John Lennon in 1970: "It was a slightly new sound at the time, because it was pretty fuckin' heavy for then. If you go and look in the charts for what other music people were making, and you hear it now, it doesn't sound too bad. It's all happening, it's a heavy record."
- When I was first getting really into The Beatles, I tried as an exercise to pick one perfect Beatles song. By perfect, I mean the one song that captures all the fun, excitement, spirit and genius of the group (i.e. if you want to convey the magic of The Beatles in one song to someone who's never heard them before, which song would you pick?). After a few moments of thought, I settled pretty quickly on "Ticket To Ride."
- I always give credit where credit is due...Maroon 5 nailed their cover of this song. • Maroon 5 - All My Lo...
