This was one of the better TID H8 reviews I've seen. Mine came in today and I'm find to refer back to this as I mess with it. 😅

There is an option to buy this radio with 10w output. It's marketed as the Ham version. Both the Ham and GMRS models can be unlocked. But the Ham version will be 10w. So the manual showing 10w is correct for those models.

I have the HAM version and it transmits 9.7W on HAM frequencies but it still only transmits 5W (4.8W tested) on GMRS. Great radio, though.

@@Blue_Goat It's fully unlocked, firmware 230923. HAM bands 9.5 to 10.3W, GMRS ch1 - 5.5W, ch16 - 5.0, rptr chans 4.8W. I did get a chuckle with MURS, 10.5W.

I just found you and I subscribed.. I have two of their other GRMS radio's and I was able to get about 4.3 miles talking to my buddy. We both got our GRMS radio license and I will be studying for the technician license soon and I want a radio that will do both and this radio seems to be a good choice.. Glad to hear about the audio.. I'm wondering if this is a super Heterodyne or whatever it's called? So, I do have a couple questions. Does this radio unlocked use 10 watts of power to transmit ? This would be great in an emergency. What is the antenna like? Does it work ok? I have a 771 though I'd probably use with it.. I did subscribe sir.. I'll be watching more videos.. I like that you do Ham and GRMS. I want a HAM because it covers basically all the frequencies needed in an emergency. Do you have any HAM content for newbies like me? Or I will be once I get licensed. Thanks again. Great review.. I'm buying this radio.. I've been watching several videos with this radio and the Talk-pod A36 I think it is, and I think this is the radio that will meet my needs.. Best Regards from south central IN. USA. Tim

So what's the output power on the unlock mode?
@The07059
7 ай бұрын
it is actually 10W radio, although not full 10W, only around 9.5W, if you get only 5W, it's maybe because you get the gmrs version and not the ham version.

When you try to program the H8 from GMRS to HAM, It shows "Data Will be Eraser". Presumably data will be erased. But what data is erased? All your GMRS frequencies? Or whatever Ham frequencies were there in the first place?? Or going back to GMRS, so you have to reprogram all the GRMS frequencies back in? What exactly gets erased? I see someone asked pretty much the same question down below, but I was not clear with the answer. Will you have to reprogram all the frequencies you already had in the radio? Thanks!

Thanks for the review, when you tested the tx power, was that in the unlocked mode? Curious because the graphic on the top of the screen reads “10” on high power on mine. I do not have a meter to test the wattage.

Yes it was on the unlocked mode but into the dummy load. I have not gotten more than 5 watts but it was originally a 10w radio but limited to stop the spurious emissions.

When you unlock the radio it erases all info except for Channel 0. It also removes any transmit or receive only restrictions that the GMRS mode has. In the GMRS mode you are limited on the total number of channels that you can transmit. The remainder are receive only scanner channels per the instruction manual. You will not get 199 TX/RX channels in GMRS mode. In Unlock mode you can have the radio transmit on any frequency you program.

Erases everything, for the u lock it expands the 2m and 70cm bands to include MURS, GMRS and LMR (business) frequencies.

So if you unlock the radio apparently it erases everything? Or just the functionality of the menu such as Rodger beep. Vox. And so on? Or do you actually have to re-download everything on ham and gmrs

Hello I have noticed that you do a lot of reviews about those communication devices. I am not into radio amateur stuff, but looking for a long range walkie talkie because I live in a place (central america) where cellular phone doesn't work. I need at least 10 miles range in mountainous environment with trees. Could you please help me or advise me, finding the right equipment ? I need it to be portable because I'm on a motorcycle. All these baofeng and variants seem to be good, but not long range enough.
