This piece really challenges the pianist, I feel. Not technical ability such as the ability to play fast, like so many "difficult" pieces, but rather the ability to control the expression, especially of the repeated notes leading to a crescendo. Many non-musicians don't realize that it's often harder to play slowly rather than fast.

So few get this prelude right in my opinion .Tiffany Poon does. Some play it like a jolly romp. Others play it far too slow. The story behind it is key: Chopin wrote it whilst on a Spanish island thinking he was dying. (he recovered and returned home). Rain was falling and he was picturing him in his coffin with rain falling on him. So it's supposed to be sombre deep and reflecting on one's life abd mortality . But it has to maintain a rhythm of rain falling. Only 1 other I think has nailed this (deliberate pun) : the player is Madeline somebody (forgot surname). it's played on a Great Courses lecture on best ever piano pieces. Beautifully played Tiffany Poon. Many have talent but few interpret pieces intelligently.

Prelude, Op. 28, No. 15 (Chopin) From Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaen.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prelude,_Op._28,_No._15_(Chopin) The Prelude Op. 28, No. 15, by Frédéric Chopin, known as the "Raindrop" prelude, is one of the 24 Chopin preludes. Usually lasting between five and seven minutes, this is the longest of the preludes. The prelude is noted for its repeating A♭, which appears throughout the piece and sounds like raindrops to many listeners Some, though not all, of Op. 28 was written during Chopin and George Sand's stay at a monastery in Valldemossa, Majorca in 1838.[ In her Histoire de ma vie, Sand related how one evening she and her son Maurice, returning from Palma in a terrible rainstorm, found a distraught Chopin who exclaimed, "Ah! I knew well that you were dead." While playing his piano he had a dream: He saw himself drowned in a lake. Heavy drops of icy water fell in a regular rhythm on his breast, and when I made him listen to the sound of the drops of water indeed falling in rhythm on the roof, he denied having heard it. He was even angry that I should interpret this in terms of imitative sounds. He protested with all his might - and he was right to - against the childishness of such aural imitations. His genius was filled with the mysterious sounds of nature, but transformed into sublime equivalents in musical thought, and not through slavish imitation of the actual external sounds.] Sand did not say which prelude Chopin played for her on that occasion, but most music critics assume it to be no. 15, because of the repeating A♭, with its suggestion of the "gentle patter" of rain. However, Peter Dayan points out that Sand accepted Chopin's protests that the prelude was not an imitation of the sound of raindrops, but a translation of nature's harmonies within Chopin's "génie". Frederick Niecks says that the prelude "rises before one's mind the cloistered court of the monastery of Valldemossa, and a procession of monks chanting lugubrious prayers, and carrying in the dark hours of night their departed brother to his last resting-place."

Beautiful voicing! I'm curious about what thoughts you might have emotionally while playing this piece--or do you think mostly in abstract terms--that is, without any specific narrative or concrete emotions? I tend to think of life and death here: the fleeting beauty of life--and the fear of death. The middle section is SO ominous--like the Grim Reaper knocking on Chopin's door. "Soon, Frederic. Soon." It's like Chopin knew he would not live long...

When I play this piece, I think of the time when Chopin composed and finalized his 24 Preludes in a monastery in Valldemossa, Mallorca where he was with George Sand and her children in the winter of 1838-39 . George Sand suggested going to this outer island of Spain hoping to help Chopin with his coughs/illness. I imagine Chopin sitting at his piano in this monastery, feeling kind of solitary/alone in a dreary day, then starting hearing the raindrops hitting the windows and walls of the monastery, together with a steady taping of the Gb note on the piano. Then, the scene slips into a dream in the middle section. The room is getting darker because a storm is coming. The thunders arrive with the loud and deep bass notes, as the rain continues to fall with the Gb note continues to sound. Then, the thunderstorm moves farther away and the rain begins to let up as we slip into a deep dream. Then all of a sudden, we wake up into reality with the high Bb note. The sound of the raindrops slowly dies out as the storm moves away, until we are immersed in absolute serenity when the rain ends.

I read from one Chopin biography that while he composed this piece he was basically near-hallucinating, described by George Sand that he saw himself drowned in a lake “heavy, icy drops, falling rhythmically on his chest.” I haven’t learned this piece (yet) but when I listen to it I think of uneasy serenity and the inner struggles of man…sometimes people appear fine on the surface when really they are suffocating inside

Not all of the thumbs down are by people. Google uses bots to influence video popularity. They routinely vote down a number between about 1% and 5% of the number of likes on videos they don't want to popularise, and ignore the videos which they can make the most profit from. Greed is the motive. After all, 5% of $1 billion is $50 million more profit for them. 2.1k views so far, and 22 dislikes is suspiciously close to a 1% rate. Also, many people give thumbs down to stop a video from appearing repeatedly in their 'suggested videos' feed.

little Composer's grow up, a dirty little tear. Sad and real. Not a madness of the beast that consume your life. Again I sit with draft's on stone and half-drafts broken around me but with the memory this time of what was mine and still what can be my accomplishment's from now to a new then. A young Composer grown up and pondering the space's in between recalling...shhh Chopin himself was torn from the bosom of his mother only to realize that his life was spared to die young...I wrote a poem about it as well.

That is what Chopin wanted. Beautiful. The arm-gesticulating seems tediously-copious. But the playing is genuinely masterful. The pauses aren’t meaningful enough. But the technique is perfect.
