Wanted to study in a conservatory when I was in high school, but due to many reasons that now I am studying in a university. I won't say I'm not disappointed for not being able to study in a conservatory, but now the life in college gives me a lot of different inspirations. I can learn many different things and meet many interesting people.

I always get asked that too. I auditioned at Berklee College of Music in Boston in 2009 but got rejected. That never broke my passion for piano though! I finished my business degree in '13 and about to finish my MBA this Winter. One thing I learned and always preach from that is an individual can always follow personal passions as long as you are focused. I have been working in the finance industry for 6 years now and still play the piano; that outcome was a natural fit. I believe everyone is different but either way, finding happiness is key!

Very well done, very straightforward and honest. It was structured as neutral as it could be given the reality that you are at Columbia, which is an excellent university. Many of my high school friends attended Columbia. I agree with your general statements regarding the difference between conservatory and college-my friends and classmates and those who were learning the piano when we were kids chose their paths using the same criteria that you outlined in your video. Those students who desired more piano and music, my piano teacher assisted them in their applications to a music conservatory and the others who wanted something other than music as primary applied to universities which had a strong music department but also had other departments that suited their primary interest in their majors. I enjoyed this video. I’m definitely recommending any juniors and seniors to watch this. Thanks for taking the time!

Great video. This is not something I am considering as an adult beginner, but interesting nonetheless. I will be moving to Japan at the end of this year, and can't wait to get a new electric piano. I hope I can continue to improve my playing. That decision is similar to the one I made - stay in England and study Japanese whilst working a job that doesn't particularly interest me , or take the plunge and relocate to further educate myself and thus find a job I would more enjoy. Both options may have the same eventual outcome but a different route.

good video. honestly conservy or uni for undergrad probably doesn't matter as much , the actual teacher/studio matter much more, there are worldclass musician-instructors quietly being awesome and helping students be awesome at small less Glammy colleges, and for well rounded development a broad undergrad experience has its benefits. once you go for a masters then which school and type can matter more , and even at a university, there are artist diploma programs that model the coursework and experience along lines of a conservatory so one can get a conservatory type experience even at a college. a good track could be BM /BME/BA at a uni w an awesome Instructor , then MM at a conservatory or then either artist diploma at a university. then if one was to to teach, a DMA or go and have a performance career and get courted to be an artist in residence instructor @ a university etc.

Hello Tiffany, I just entered college here in Brazil to study piano, and this video would have been super helpful if made before, haha, just kidding . The "variety" you talk about on the video is killing me. I need to work too, so I feel I waste too much time studying things other than music. But, near my place, there aren't good conservatories, where you can really live music. So, basically you just have to go to college to live these music experiences. If there were better conservatories in my city, I would leave the college. Love your vlogs and piano videos, bye!

I really enjoyed this video! It reminded me of my own choice: college vs conservatory. As things turned out, I got accepted at two conservatories but rejected by my college of choice. So, I let destiny make the decision for me and went for one of the conservatories (Translate: I let my mediocre GPA make the decision for me! haha). Looking back, no regrets. The conservatory experience was perfect for me. Still, as I mentioned in another comment, I think your playing, Tiffany, has benefited from having studied philosophy. It has deepened it intellectually.

I’m from the “Southend” or South of Seattle Washington, and a lot of the times I can be surrounded by so much technology and all the I.T., doctors, etc and all the mainstream like careers and music is something I want to do, I really want to go to Juilliard not only just because my music teacher recommended it to me but just by the people who I can end up meeting there which could bring great connections and it’s such an international school. However, I’m still on the zone where my mom at least wants me to be involved with computer science or IT or what ever that has a lot of reliability in terms of paying the bills etc because when I told her I wanted to become a concert pianist, she wanted me to always have a minor to just have that side of reliability. I don’t know anymore because I’m on a path that can bring me forward regardless but I also have a lot of support where I come from that can get my life stable and all. I mean I want to do my passion but if can’t pay my bills it’s hard to take in. Music is my passion deeply but so is computers, which also can be more reliable in terms of money, and I’m having a hard time thinking about doing both.

If you go to a music conservatory to study classical music, you don't take non music courses, right? So there won't be anything to fall back on, since there is no money in classical music and you will have to WAIT ON TABLES! Get a minor in music , but get an education in a field where you can get a job. There are 60 million Chinese in mainland China who are studying piano right now! Too much competition. No live music anywhere, just cd's, radio etc.

Columbia University was a good choice for studying philosophy at least according to something called the Philosophical Gourmet Report of 2017-18. It has one of the top 20 gruaduate programs for philosophy in the English speaking world. Also it is understandable to be reluctant to have controversy emerge in your comment section it can create unfortunate social dynamics. I would hope that you would have some sort of social outlet with friends who like to engage in deep controversial topics when you ever get the urge to sharpen your reasoning skills from engaging with another mind.

Philosophy being a totally weak major.. if not one of the weakest.. what an uninformed load of... 🙄 STEM college majors spend 12 hrs/day doing massive loads of math problems and studying for exams and writing up lab data.. some STEM students have so much work that they clandestinely sleep inside the lab while their experiments run overnight so they can squeeze more time into their work.. aint no time for "some people play music 12 hrs/day and you can find the time" music in any of that.

I know this is a long time ago, but It is absolutely not safe for a pianist of her level to do exercises that may bring injuries to her hands. This can ruin her career. (Maybe running on a running machine or some sit up, but no bike riding because it risk falling and breaking her wrist.) Also, though exercising is important, not everyone has time to exercise, as it is not a priority to some people’s life.

This is perhaps not the best place to put this comment. However, I do not know a better place. Before I make my comment please know that although I think you are adorable, I watch only a few of your videos and those that I do watch I do not necessarily watch to the end. I can only take a few minutes of adorable at a time. My concern is your health. From what I have seen in your wandering around, taking the subway, preparing a meal, attending an opera with a friend, practicing the piano, etc. I do not see regular exercise. Regular intense exercise (with non-optional resistance training) is part of maintaining good health. Do you exercise regularly? Do you understand the importance of developing such habits? Do you swim, do you run, do you play tennis or squash? To the extent that living a good life is about balance, is exercise a part of your life?

Are you just plain stupid? If my memory serves correctly, she shows lots of personal detail about her life. She tells us about the importance of getting a good night of sleep. The importance of proper sleep has become rather uncontroversial (See Matthew Walker's recent book "Why We Sleep.") The importance of regular exercise for the proper maintenance of the body and mind is also uncontroversial. You really suggest that asking her whether she plays any sports or runs or swims is too personal. Get a grip.
@milly4543
6 жыл бұрын
No, but you're plain rude. Oh I'm sorry, guess mentioning a few general tips about school and juggling responsibilities is automatically vlogging your whole life. Why are you concerned for her health? Nothing about her indicates she is in poor health nor is it anybody's business how she lives, what she eats etc. Are you a medical professional? Dietician? Asking people about their health and routines IS personal. Not sure which planet you've grown up on.
@matthewalan59
6 жыл бұрын
I plead guilty to being rude.But I am not stupid. You are. I do not need to be a dietician nor a medical professional to know that exercise is an important part of being healthy over the long term. I just need to be able to read. Try it sometime. Are you suggesting I am wrong about the importance of exercise? If so, please cite a relevant authority. You accuse me of asking personal questions about her health. I did not. Read my post. I asked such super personal questions like "Do you swim?" (That was sarcasm by the way in case you cannot recognize it) If I have unintentionally asked a question that is too personal, she has the option of simply not replying. She does not need some moron like you to respond on her behalf. Just exactly who are you to take that role? I am concerned about exercise because I see so many young people neglect it. Regular exercise is a habit that should be cultivated when one is young. Contrary to your claim, Tiffany has shared much more about her life than just a few general tips. It occurred to me that I did not see in her videos any reference to exercise. So, l asked. Then for some reason that is totally beyond me, an idiot (you), replied.

I didn't call you stupid lol but you were rude yet again. Health and sport are not the same topic. Asking about somebody's health is personal. Seriously, I'm done with your uncouth manner. Not much I can say to insult you as you've already said more than enough about yourself.
