Had to do a .040" wall aluminum tube with a solid plug in the end. Pulse was the only way to do that weld. You couldn't pedal it enough to keep from blowing away the thinwall aluminum tube!

Could you do stops on scratch start tig on stainless pipe? More of a down and dirty in the plant type scenario. It’s always gray but I feel it could be better 🤷♂️

I love this channel... I cant wait to get a tig welder... I learned how to MIG weld from watching your videos, and I want to continue expanding on my capabilities. My job will pay for me to get weld certs. As an engineer, it's not really what I do for a living, but I feel obligated to understand the implications of my decision making on the shop guys. I had a hard conversation early in my career that started out with the expression "look what you did college boy"... LOL Ever since then, I've been in a pursuit of a finer understanding of the details... Anyway, thanks for spending the time to bring the rest of us down your path... It has made the difference...

Love to hear engineers trying to be this thorough! My dad was a mechanical engineer for Boeing, had a few patents. He would always get frustrated with other engineers because they wouldn't consider the mechanics. My dad would try to tell them "until you've spent 4 hours under a vehicle trying to reach 1 bolt, you need to be quiet." Best engineer I've met outside my dad grew up on a farm in Canada. Had to learn to solve problems.

My go-to pulse settings on thin steel (16gauge), with a miller maxstar with variable amp control, is 15pps, 85% peak, 25% background. The pulse is fast enough to keep the puddle hot enough to feed wire at any time, yet keeps it cold enough to weld directly on 16 gauge without penetration.

Many years ago I would weld light steel 'corner to corner' using a low hydrogen stick. I had the amps set moderate to high and with all said and done, I whipped the arc backwards and forwards rapidly. Each time my whipping action came back to the puddle, it added to the weld metal and as I swiped outwards again, the keyhole closed just a fraction and the next bit of it would fill on the next back stroke.... I'd keep my eye on the puddle and keyhole and it was very easy to see penetration with no slag inclusion bad spots. I'd guess the rod tip travel would be around 6 - 8 inches and I'd cycle at about 80 - 100 per minute. Its decades ago I did this and now I can see that I was 'Pulse Welding' corner to corner. Try this technique sometime. Its easier than it sounds. The arc stays alight for the full burn of the rod and yet the heat in the base metal is controlled with the arc being moved back and forth rapidly. Higher amps are easier to control than lower. Unless I'm mistaken, I was 'Stick Pulse Welding'...
