@JeffSkverskyKZitem
Andy Ibáñez came through in the clutch, hitting a tiebreaking three-run double in the Tigers’ four-run eighth inning to propel Detroit to a 5-2 win over the Houston Astros in Game 2 of their AL Wild Card Series. The Tigers, who were six games under .500 in late June, have now advanced to the ALDS after sweeping the Astros.
After the game, Ibáñez reflected on his big moment:
"I know September wasn’t the most productive month for me, but I’ve just got to trust myself. I’m grateful for my faith, my coaches, and my teammates who supported me all the way."
On his pivotal eighth-inning hit, Ibáñez said, "As soon as I made contact, I was hoping it would be fair. Most importantly, I was pushing for the runners to keep going."
He also spoke about the Tigers’ strong bond this season: "We have this connection, this togetherness. Nobody expected us to make the playoffs, but we didn’t care. We just put in the hard work, supported each other, and got the results."
The Tigers now move on to face the Cleveland Guardians in the ALDS.
The Tigers are the fourth team in history to win a playoff series after being 10+ GB of a playoff spot at least 110 games into the season.
2011 Cardinals
1969 Mets
1964 Cardinals
All three went on to win the World Series.
