Two things! 1. I finally posted the free instructions for this wrench on Rebrickable found here: rebrickable.com/mocs/MOC-194522/engine1ear/adjustable-torque-wrench/#details and 2. Thank you all so much for the encouragement and overwhelmingly positive feedback! Because I want there to be a low barrier of entry for LEGO engines and tools for engine building I don't want to charge people money for any of it. If you want support what I do, feel free to Paypal me at the email address on my channel page. And if you do build this wrench and/or improve on the socket design or anything else, please tag me!

You know, Lego did actually make a threaded axle and nuts, part 3737b. Barely used ever, though. If you managed to get a hold of one though you could make another socket for those.
@engine1ear151

@@WAHa06x36 Wow that's so cool that you knew about those! I have some coming from the UK as we speak! (or...type?) I found out from looking at old instructions that the nut is designed to nest between four studs (in the middle of a 2x2 plate for example). I'm excited to try them out and wish LEGO was still manufacturing them.

I think it would be amazing to see the community develop a hardware system around this!
@RCmies

@@engine1ear151 Well I would personally go for a custom brick built design instead of using a piece that actually looks like a socket, even if it doesn't look realistic like that part. However, maybe you could actually make that part work in a much more elegant way too. I was thinking if bricklink part 4490 could go around the studs of the life preserver piece when sideways for example, and then build around that. Of course the challenge is to keep it sturdy enough and not too bulky, but hopefully that might give some inspiration!

that's so cool. now i want to hear more explanation about the Lego torque wrench
@engine1ear151
27 күн бұрын
I had a life-sized air-powered engine project I was working on in university where I was replicating every aspect of the engine like the pistons, connecting rods, valve, valve seats, head, ports, sparkplugs, water jackets, etc. One detail I included just for looks that didn't have viable mechanical function was head studs, which are the threaded and hold the head of the engine to the block by tightening down nuts. Think head bolts semi-permanently attached to the engine block. I had the engine block modeled on the LEGO design software Studio, and I wanted to render a comparison photo to see it side by side with the real engine block, but the head studs just didn't look good without those worm gears on them totally posing as the threaded portion of the stud. At the time I didn't think at all there would be a part that could act as a nut, but I later found out there was. My process of imagining what I wanted with an artistic eye led to finding the fluke that the life-preserver fit like a nut! That's a little more of the backstory of the discovery that sparked the wrench. The wrench itself was almost a default part of the dream to create large, more realistic LEGO engines with components and assembly that resembled real engines. In other words, if I'm saying to myself, "Let's make these engines assemble the way real engines do," then it's only natural to say, "Let's make the tools everybody uses for engine assembly!" So that's what I did. It started with just the ratchet, and when that turned out at the scale I had desired, I kept going with the rest of the wrench. Once I learned about the overcenter mechanism in the middle, I set about finding LEGO parts that could nest a 1x1 brick just right to tilt it over (the square to diamond action I talked about in the video). The tooth parts I used also worked far better than expected. The first prototype was unicorn barf as my friend likes to call it when LEGO engine prototypes are a multi-colored mess prioritizing function over form, and when it all worked and friends and family, and coworkers gave a lot of positive feedback, I made it more presentable. It now has square drive as well with a detent ball to hold a socket on like a real wrench. You can see the most up-to-date version in the instructions on Rebrickable. I don't know if you were asking for this kind of story, but maybe it does give you a little more explanation about the wrench. I look forward to seeing things other people do with this bolt/nut trick!
