To anyone who loves Tiki, Adventure, Faux Fantasy, Jungle decor, Tropical scenery, or even just wood carving: Oceanic Arts was a legendary institution. For 66 years they supplied the WORLD (including Disney parks and Polynesian Islands) with all things tropical, including Tiki carvings. Their showroom in Whittier became the DISNEYLAND of Tiki, sacred ground for those who came to see ground zero for the design of what we think of as "tiki" today, which came largely from the artist-in-charge, LeRoy Schmaltz. LeRoy's masks and carvings are beyond legendary in the tiki world, but he created the look and feel of Tiki the world over, and much lesser known is his incredible body of art work in all kinds of mediums, Which are also on display this weekend at the FINAL CLOSING of Oceanic Arts. The "Sweep it clean" warehouse sale.
For those who've been paying attention, yes it's been a long drawn out closing, and it seemed like it would last forever. We had the amazing peekaboo events to say goodbye to Bob and LeRoy and Oceanic arts, but after LeRoy's passing, the practical cleaning out of the overstock and inventory and warehouse has been a process... a process all culminating in this one weekend! So both to help spread the word and to document this moment in Tiki History, we're meeting up with LeRoy's son Christopher for an epic tour of Oceanic Arts before its final weekend - and before the building is sold and gone forever!
