I have seen people do that kind of thing and then show me something awesome and I've been excited to give credit where it's due. I think, like another comment said, it's about the amount of hype he built for such a low quality song. The song itself isn't even the worst in the world. It's not great and I don't enjoy it but some of the melodic intervals are at least interesting and I could see someone liking it. But he started off being kind of annoying with that question and then didn't shock people with the high quality of it lol

@@DrawDrawDrawAnime1234 You don't have to justify your likes or interests to other people. If your friend thinks a song/artist you like sucks, that's okay and you shouldn't try to convince them that they're wrong; they have a right to have an opinion. Now if they're actively trying to put you down by making fun of your tastes or trying to seem superior, the best thing you can do is not give a f. Do YOU like it? Then what matters what your friend thinks? You can live your life trying to justify all your tastes to bitter people who find pleasure in hating on things, or you can just ignore them and keep on gleefully consuming your interests, no matter how "objectively bad" or "good" they are

I think one of the big things is his declaration that it's going to be successful before playing that. That primes your alt crowd to immediately be suspicious. The song isn't actually bad, it's just not a hit.
@Bean-hz8jo
11 күн бұрын
Yeah, especially with the alt crowd, theres often some innate importance placed on the fact that the music doesnt "exist to be popular". That's not a good thing, thats not a bad thing, it just is. Sometimes you end up with a bunch of people "gatekeeping" their favorite bands because they don't want them to get mainstream, but I think at it's core it's about wanting music to be kind of its own and authentic. Marketing a song to that community by going "this is gonna be a HIT!" is not exactly thought out..

I feel that starting that tiktok with “is this the next emo anthem” was the biggest mistake. Any bold statements like that and the like of “if you like MCR you’ll love my band” are destined to not work with the emo crowd. The alternative scene was born out of not liking what everyone else likes, not being who everyone else is, by not fitting in so making it obvious that we don’t fit in. Tell us you made a song you think we might enjoy, that represents your view on the scene. That’ll get way more positive attention. I listen to pop punk frequently, and IMO this song is OK at best, but I think the visuals are where it really falls apart. If you've ever seen a video by Finn McKenty (The Punkrock MBA) you know how important he thinks the projected personality, or "star power", of the frontman of a band is, and I tend to agree with that. This is a one-man-band (as far as I can tell), which makes his presentation even more important when he decides to include himself in the video(s). To me he comes off as disingenuous in the newer videos (including the music video), like he's doing a persona, and the performance feels both forced and understated somehow, like he doesn't quite dare to go all in, because it's not really who he is. (The half assed dance in the "happy pop-break" at 6:08 was especially painful to watch). In the older videos he comes off as more genuine, and even though the music isn't necessarily better, it's at least more pleasant to watch. I get making a flashy video and trying to stand out, but people can smell bullshit from a mile away. The lyrics also seem to be impersonaI, and to me they come off more like he's used a "pop punk lyric formula" rather than write something meaningful himself. I'm not saying this to be mean to the guy, it's just my take on the matter. I do hope he keeps at it and tries to improve, and that he can learn to project himself more genuinely in the process.

I was really heavy in the pop punk scene in high school and this guy reminds me of a lot of the people I used to hang out with. The internal conflict of not caring about fitting in with the mainstream and desperately wanting the approval of the pop punk/emo community is a huge part of the culture and if you're not immediately beloved and accepted within the community, it's easy to fall into this sort of cringe defensiveness. I don’t know specifically about pop punk but I’ve seen this a lot too with other groups and made me feel bad for him. Hopefully something good will come of this for him.

THIS. Punk is supposed to be about bucking the mainstream, being weird and coming as you are, but then within THAT group you have to conform to what everyone agrees is acceptable weirdness or you become even more hated. It’s pretty messed up. Realizing you don’t fit into the norm, thinking you might have found a group of people who feel the same as you, finally letting your guard down and exposing your weirdness to that group - only to then be told you’re the wrong kind of weird.. fuck man.

Great, constructive vid! I was surprised no one brought it up in the TikTok comments, but the song clip he’s using is eerily similar to the chorus of ”Kings & Queens” by Thirty Seconds To Mars, with ”Kings & Queens” being changed to ”princes & princesses”. Even if that’s a reference on purpose it’s too close for comfort. As you said, the rest of the song is also better! He’s got great potential for sure.

Danny being honest but not needlessly cruel is such a nice thing to see, I feel like a lot of people who focus on commentary try too hard to justify their criticism instead of keeping a fair balance and end up being a bit excessive in an attempt to overcompensate. Good video, hopefully this dude can learn from it. (I think the most important thing to learn from these days is the point about giving people a reaction. Even smaller artists I follow run into this problem where they try to be accommodating and instead people use it as opportunity to dogpile accusations or guilt them into only creating content that person wants to see.)

I know this video is old, but I think the thing with Andy is he can either make music for the community, or make music for himself and build a community around that. There's nothing wrong with either of those routes, as long as you're enjoying it. But Andy is trying to make music for himself and push that music onto the community, and it's clearly not working out. One thing I think might help is cover songs? It helps you get a better grasp of the instruments and singing styles and what you like versus what other people like.

I don't think a lot of people think about how disproportionate it is to rag on him this hard for so little. They just saw him feeling himself and his song and decided to knock him down. ALSO. The culture of just ruthlessly knocking on people or cringing at them is so exhaustingly negative and it's also like... discouraging anyone from trying things or sharing them if they can't be instantly popular or monetized or perfect beyond reproach. Ugh. I’m so torn. On the one hand, I definitely feel bad for the dude because assholes on the internet _love_ to take shit waaaay too far. And he most certainly hasn’t done anything to deserve *any* genuine hate. _However,_ dude straight up *asked* everyone if he’d written a classic. Which is a _hella_ bold move. (Especially considering, in _my personal_ opinion, the song’s pretty rough.) So, yeah, he kinda got what he asked for? (A bit too much to the extreme though, that’s for sure!) Hopefully this guy sees Danny’s video (Which I’m *sure* that he will!) and takes his advice to heart as they’re some pretty solid pointers! Best of luck, my dude!
@BecksPatryk

seriously, dude set himself up for failure. obviously he doesn’t deserve the excessive hate but he set expectations up way too high for a song that really doesn’t stand on its own stylistically? i feel like he has potential, but he needs room to grow before he can call any of his songs an anthem. i wish him the best of luck, though.

He doesn’t even seem old enough to be saying he was in any way part of these “glory days” he’s like 23 at the most which would mean he was single digit age at the time emo and pop punk were at their peak in the 2000s.

I really don’t mind the song, but I think what a lot of people didn’t like was him calling it “the next emo anthem.” I think, by doing that, he attracted an audience that’s not his target audience

No shade to this guy, I'm super glad he's living his best life, but he's no incredible lyricist? Not sure what you were listening to but not EVERY pop punk artist was, is, or should be the same. Also I think people don't realize there is some descrepancy between early emo and pop punk artists. Strictly emo or post-hardcore tended to be darker, grungier, or more depressing while the pop punk and scene era leaned heavier on the angsty rebellious teen anthems. We're talking about an umbrella genre that spans over 25 years at this point, it's super reductive to say all of it wasn't incredible music just cause of Blink 182 or We the Kings or some shit.

I feel like if he had released this 10/15 years ago, he would have had a much bigger fan base because it's not so out of place for that time period as it is now. Like it's not awful, it's just not as good as the hype he tried to create which is part of why people are reacting negatively. I'm sure if Andy kept working on his style he'd eventually find more of an audience that digs it

This would not fit in with pop punk/emo 10-15 years ago. This song is a quintessential example as to why modern pop punk isn't anywhere close to being as good as pop punk in the 90s/2000's.

Never heard about this until now and I just listened to it. It sounds like Kings and Queens by 30 Seconds to Mars if it were watered down, filtered to the bare bones of lyrical writing, and also sung by Shane Dawson. In fact the choruses almost seems identical in melody if you listen to them multiple times. Which isn’t bad per se, he just needs to develop a bit more of his own sound that fits his vocals in a better way.

I was just about to comment saying the same thing, especially the "We are the princes and princesses of..." being almost exactly the same as Thirty Seconds to Mars' "We are the kings and queens of..." down to having nearly the same melody. Pretty sure that was a big part of his downfall, making a song trying to emulate an another already popular song (even if he didn't consciously mean to) instead of making music that was truly "his".

i think the biggest problem with the guy's music is he seems like a rhythm guitarist, the type that learned music through singing over acoustic guitar. which is great! but you cant always just take something that sounds good with acoustic guitar and vocals, slam it out on electric, and then sing louder and hope it works. ill bet you ANYTHING he composes on acoustic guitar, relying on his more practiced skills. i do that too, but it's not exactly easy to write electric guitar pieces with an acoustic instrument. that acoustic ballad version of the song is great because the guitar and vocals work together to create a flow. in the electric one, hes using power chords, and longer notes, and he doesnt change the vocals. it just creates an awkward mismatch and it makes it sound like he's singing off tempo. just one notch better at making music, like danny said, and this guy would have it in the bag! he's just missing the mark a little bit on the genre and on a consistent genre, instrument to instrument.

Right! I think a lot of people have seen how soul sucking and damaging the dog piles and "joking" insults can be, and are just coming to a more empathetic place where the vibe is like... you do you, man. I think a lot of people didn't like what they were becoming either. The toxicity also means no one really feels safe expressing themselves or sharing or growing, so it's also suffocating and discouraging to be around.
