Wow, the Google algorithm delivers yet again...I was at that show...I am 3 rows back, front and center somewhere in this video...What had happened is a rain shower delayed the start of the show...many left because of the rain...I was in the back...being soaked didn't bother me and was/am a HUGE fan of Aimee Mann...So I was able to just keep moving forward as people left because of the rain...by the time the show started I was 12 - 15 ft away. Still remember this like it was yesterday, what voice, what an artist...

I am absolutely in love with "Queens of the Summer Hotel" right now. It was supposed to be the soundtrack to a shelved Broadway take on "Girl, Interrupted" (or so I read). There are some absolute gems on there ("Suicide is Murder" was an immediate favorite) - Aimee's confessional voice and lyrics, a playful use of time signatures and instrumentation, it's just so good - the best (IMO) songs and performances since Magnolia/Bachelor No. 2. I used to wonder why artists like Aimee Mann weren't more well-known - but then you look at what IS popular and think, "oh, right, I get it - this is ponderous, emotive, and deep. How can that compare with 'WAP'?!?!" I'm just glad that music like this exists.

Apparently the drummer had a crush on her and that's it. The song "Voices Carry" lyrics were changed by the big corporation because it was about 2 women. Not a man and a woman. Aimee did refuse a deal that, this song, with the original lyrics, would be performed by Alison Moyet. She kept it for 'til tuesday and changed all the "she" with "he" and some other words here and there. Basically, it was a song about lesbians. I can't confirm Aimee sexual orientation and its none of my business.

When MTV was out of this world 1980-1990. Then, they decided to destroy it.

I know right? When I grew up in first came out it awesome with the classic rock and the hair bands! And then they went to hip hop and rap and MTV went to shit.

@@JohnBrown-uq6ul I was ok with the rap and Hip Hop, loved Run DMC, the music evolved. Reason i stopped was becoming a reality drama TV. A channel called Music TV with no music. It would be like Fox News or CNN becoming the comedy channel ( on second thought maybe news channels have become comedy TV)

Most of the music MTV played sucked. Instead of pushing The Smiths, Joy Division, and all of the great bands that broke in the early 1990s, they played a lot of boy bands, Mariah Carey, and Janet Jackson.

...great songs like this came POURING out of the 80's......and silence since then......nobody can sit down-- and invent a song like this....it's so original, so unique.................there is NO motivation these days to create..........

Yuppers. Right around 1990, everything just started to tank with the heavier influx of rap and then the dreaded grunge, from which very little of value came. I was looking so forward to what the 90's would bring, could hardly wait, couldn't hardly imagine...and instead, was utterly and completely disappointed as music, and consciousness in general, just went backwards and, basically, never recovered.

My feeling is that 2 things drive pop music....money and the girl factor....A 4 to 8 man band is expensive, and although I'm a sideline amateur, I could see that there is a long learning curve to get that group to "mesh" both individually and collectively.....For instance the Kings of Leon.....just some punks practicing in the garage so to speak...very cheaply....probably were not going to make anything....then BOOM....The hit song came along. But they had the time to let that seedling germinate and sprout.....the pay-off would be money....and girls....But with the advent of "burning" instead of "buying".....money became more elusive. Live concerts were the ONLY sure pay-off and you had to already be established......Instead of "Video killing the radio star".....it became....the " Internet killed the video star".........

I agree. The 60s were great. The 70s were a mixed bag. Once we got the 70s disco behind us, the 80s produced some wonderful music. I heard my first rap song in the 80s and thought it was unique. Little did I know that 30s years later people were still going to be stuck on listening to the same song over and over again. It is called rap or crap. It is composed mostly of angry black poets who cannot sing or play any musical instrument. At least Hendrix could play a guitar in inventive fashion.

+E JC I've been called "racist" because of how much I hate rap. Then I tell them what a huge jazz fan I am (Monk, Peterson, ETC), *and* huge James Brown fan (listen to "Mother Popcorn" if you haven't) and that shuts them up pretty fast. On that note, compare Mother Popcorn, the musicianship, to anything being done today, and realize that was done in the 60's. Where are all the black folks expanding upon that absolutely outstanding skill set these days. Seems like they practically had that whole market cornered with sheer talent...and instead decided sequencers and samplers, going in the exact opposite direction, was the route to take. And altho I agree with most of what you said, I do hate hearing disco getting slammed. There wasn't any good reason for it in my opinion, Bee Gees went on to become one of the biggest sellers of all time in part because they made amazing music. The disco bashing seemed almost exclusively a fad that people were latching onto; but there is no question there was talent in that genre and as a comparison, talent that rap can't even begin to touch in composition, song writing and instrument skill sets. Just listen to the bass line in Staying Alive.

Saw Aimee Mann play a live set at Borders bookstore in the 90s. The band was silent between songs - they had a comedian talking during the breaks and it was a fun combination of music and laughter. She's a great songwriter, top notch talent.
