I was in Iraq in 2003, 2004 and 2009. While it would t compare to Afghanistan, from the moment we crossed the border, it was obvious we had no hope of achieving anything. Our leaders made every mistake possible, lost INSANE amounts of equipment and supplies on a regular basis thru not being able to do the basics of soldiering. Map reading, talking to locals, insuring a good supply chain all fell to the wayside. most were too lazy or cowardly to go on convoys or patrols. Thing is a + 2 or 3 let's say like for the avg European family wouldn't work there - afghan families are waaay larger. after the airport situation we actually found out that many ppl made it on the planes to EU that weren't in our service and we left many more behind that should have been the ones coming into Germany instead. this idea of "you're in, now you can bring in everyone to your second cousin on your mom's side" won't work on such a scale. Then we can just drop all pretense, get rid of passports and borders and let everyone in. It's impossible to control. So yeah, It's a bad situation with bad alternatives...the way the country was abandoned overnight didn't leave much room for compromise or negotiation with Taliban which would've been possible a few years ago. Since no one really loved the afghan republic enough to defend it from Kandahar or even Kabul one of the largest ground forces (the ANA on paper) just fell together or joined the Taliban. All in all horrible every way you look at it. Why couldn't we stay longer - at least until we pulled out regularly?
