And nobody does solo guitar like tim. Revising my comment to say, i’m well aware of all the amazing jazz guitarists who have mastered the art of “solo” guitar over the decades. Too many to name. But even among all that talent, tone and technique, Tim still stands out. There’s something so humble in his virtuosity. It’s always stunning but not show-offy. And always the blues. Always.

No matter stylistically what you play, you have ALWAYS SOLD THE MELODY. That's the crux of the song and you use it as the cut and paste through out the song and I hear you singing it under your breath. Always an affirmative of, you can do this too

Thanks for this... I always seem to think I need to be more chord melody like in my solo playing but as I work through your True Fire solo pathways I see I can be more open... Plus, single notes are easier for a hack like me...😁

thank you, this is really helpful and I'm going to watch it again! I've been thinking a lot about this question, and I agree that solo guitar, like any other instrument, is whatever you make of it. But I find it much harder to do that on the guitar than on the piano, for instance, so I'm still striving for it. And I know all the notes on the fretboard pretty close to instantly and am just about as good at finding the triads as on the piano (not quite as fast though). That piece at the end sounded kind of like Angel Eyes, but I think it was something else, but can't identify it.

Wow - you are barking up my alley. I've been playing for several decades and I played a fair number of restaurant/coffee house gigs in a duo/trio setting (some larger groups as well). When I moved to my current locale, I wanted to get back to that, but I found the economics were driving it towards solo players, except that almost all of the solo players just play with backing tracks, which to me is cheating (or listening to someone practicing). So I went on a quest to learn solo, and I quickly realized that many of us grew up in the era where all bands had a lead player, a rhythm player, a bass player, and a drummer, and it was always about "staying in your lane". So I'm constantly amazed now that I'm reimagining music differently. Chord melody, to me, kind of comes down to block chords. It's ok for the melody, but how many of those players can solo well? And if you can't solo, how many tunes would you need to fill up a 2-3 hour gig? (a lot, not to mention, getting bored with yourself). I listen to a lot of piano players and I love the idea that they have instant polyphony, so that's what I've been working toward: bass lines melody, and harmony, but not in block chord style. It's surely a different world.

its not a difficult concept (chord melody) and in my opinion a very useful term ..in describing a "particular" approach ( ie playing the melody as accentuated within the harmony (Ted Greene's sheets are very good examples (on a clear day.. comes to mind etc) a piano style with all fingers and "particular grips and voicings" (its not solo guitar... a more problematic term) one can have a bass spelling out the bottom... pianists DO play chord melodic (but often their right hand is spelling melody line...and left hand the bass and bottom end....so its not quite the same thing..(ie.. the sounding of a chord and highlighting a particular melody note simultaneously (Im not sure classical guitarists would need the term) one might say Wes.. is a good example.. I would NOT consider playing all three parts at once (B H M) (Chet or Tommy E ) as Chord Melody.. . to me.. its a fine term..and more specific.. "playing the melody...via particular chord voicings.. and particular grips" (which are particular to guitar) .. Ted Greene is the person.. I most admire for this (Ive never witnessed better guitar scores)...why even use the word Solo ?.. just play Guitar
@TimLerchGuitar

Ted Greene made one record. The title of the record is Solo Guitar. Ted would occasionally use the term Chord Melody but he used it to describe a particular style. I’m not suggesting that Solo Guitar is a description of a style, but rather it’s a description of someone okaying unaccompanied.

There are endless numbers of books teaching “chord melody” that seem to mean solo guitar. Sometimes we have to realize the world isn’t necessarily interested in adopting our preferred lingo.
