"Hand, you have held that stone." - James Wright
"In my video for “Shade and Shadow,” the presence of the Ohio River connects with the imagery of the song’s lyrics: Seven hills in blue and gold and River swells with rain, sweet labor sleep, among others. I knew the location for this video had to include the Ohio.
And that’s why James Wright’s poetry hits deep with me. A poet along the river. And there is something about river towns. Something about being adjacent to such force. Its movement. Its pull.
Todd Lipscomb’s footage brings the viewer close, what I aim for during my performances. To create space and to draw the audience in. I was glad how well Todd’s footage captures the closeness I want my music to achieve.
A closeness to coarse twine. A chipped and weathered half-pipe. Stop-motion movements of rounds of maple branches. An abandoned bird’s nest. “Shade and Shadow” is about holding what is dear to us while also knowing some of what we love will outlive us. The world holds what we leave.
Most of the video was shot in the small town of Moscow, Ohio: a quiet village along the Ohio River. In the town, there's this skatepark adjacent to the shuttered power plant. Quite the perfect backdrop for skateboarding into the Anthropocene. And I’m not the best skateboarder, never was. Though that afternoon I had birds and two municipal workers on their lunch break as my spectators. And the Ohio pulling us downriver."
