Thanks for the mention. Yeah if one is not so comfortable then work up to it, We also drop cut all brace stock, the whole batch of braces are set out and the saw guy goes down the row doing the same repetitive task, sometimes there is a second guy just handling the braces so the saw guy can focus on handling the saw without setting it down after each cut, And that knot deserves a good drop cut.

It requires a little flexibility, but a more controlled alternative to a drop cut on a square end is to knee down and cut upward. One could even sit on a stool or bucket and have excellent stability.

Drop cutting is a perfect way to cut the cord off your saw!!! Don't ask me how I know! LOL

I hear you! Performing a drop cut requires handling the saw in an awkward position - errors are most prevalent when working in awkward positions. Drop cut can save time but need to be well staged for success

For those who cannot afford or justify the exorbitant price of a Mafell, there are other tools out there that also do a very good job! I have a friend who is a professional timber framer and much of his arsenal is Mafell and fun to use. I am not a professional and I own no Mafell and I get by okay. If you're cutting beams for a living then perhaps that alone can justify the 2x, 3x or 4x prices.
