3:27 On this map after you destroy the barrier, place a dam in its place. This way you will get a water reservoir for only 20 logs. This reservoir will not dry out during the grace period for droughts even on hard difficulty so you will keep a big part of your farming area. Even after you will build a dam across the river, this mini reservoir will be useful if you'll drink all the water in the dammed river. Unless you put pumps there, of course. 5:30 While planting mainly carrots is ok, you SHOULD plant some potatoes. Grill can be built using only logs so it's an early game building. Grilled potatoes give a Nutrition II buff that adds 30% strength to your beavers. Why is it important? Because 1 log weights 6kg. A beaver's default carrying capacity is 10kg. So it can only carry 1 log. But with the 30% buff beavers can carry 13kg, or 2 logs. So you will basically double your logging and construction speed. 19:18 Birches are not good for anything. They give only 1 wood per 9 days. If you're low on trees, plant some pines to get 2 wood per 12 days. But mainly plant maples (8 wood per 24 days). If you still have enough trees left in the area, plant only maples. In any case, phase out pines into maples after gathering them once. Maples are more space-efficient and more labor-efficient.

Very good tips, I learned a lot. Anyway the consumption of beavers is different than you stated, I checked it carefully by starting the game with 1000/1000 resources and just waiting 5 days. For settings of 100% and idle beavers: In total they consumed 60 food and 50 water. 2,4 food per day 2 water per day Food replenishes 16,(6)% less bar than water. Both bars disappear at the same rate. The actual consumption is even less, because when the strip is depleted you are actually saving food or water. This is most noticeable with porters when they have to walk a long way. Their consumption has dropped by 20%. Other beavers also tend to starve/need water for a short time too and it takes them a while to get there, so more realistic values are: 2.3 food per day 1.9 water per day Beavers eat/drink 3 units at a time when they are starving/ lacking water. When they are idle they eat one at a time without waiting for the bar to run out.

Tried this game for the first time a few days ago, really fun. I was just sort of guessing at the water and food requirements, so this helped a lot. Turns out my instinct for things worked out somewhat in line with what is suggested, but i didn't realize the huge advantage of having haulers. That would have made my first play through a bit smoother.

If you use a water dump and levees, optionally also stairs, you can irrigate the land much cheaper than with an irrigation tower, and lets you have all-season non-aquatic plants and always-irrigated land. That way, you only need to worry about proximity to the processing and storage buildings, and nothing else.

Actually, when you build your scavs at the end of the red line. Their individual range goes a pretty good ways past the district boundary. You might not need to move district center on that map to reach. Would have to test though. Cause builders can build slightly past the red line. They just won't be part of that district.
@ke6gwf

Yes, I can confirm that if you build the metal flag at the end of the red line, they can reach the ruins. I did not know until yesterday that you could simply move the district center, and man, that would have made life so much easier! Lol I put an upper dam in and than ran a levee around to turn that area where the metal flags can go into farmland, but I can only get the metal during the dry season by deleting a section of levee, because it's too far if you put stairs over the levee...

I always rush 4 things to research: Forester (obviously), Levee, Stairs, and Water Dump. You can build 4 Levees around an empty space, put stairs going up one Levee, and build a Water Dump on the Levee. The worker will fill the 1x1 square with water and will hydrate a huge circle of land around it. Then you can pause the building and still get the water effect. It's an early game Water Tower for both factions. A lot like blighted ground in WC3. Make sure to assign workers and fill them all up right before the drought, and they will last through a 9 day drought.

made a tiny early game mistake: not attacking the forest to the left, and not placing the first dam on that early game reservoir that had the natural debris you disassembled. (put your first dam block where the debris was originally and that will keep a modest portion of your base lush during the first seven droughts so crops continue to grow.

Great game, just got into it. Although this video being about a year old, anybody picking up the game should be aware of a few changes: * You shouldn't get rid of all of the free time at the beginning of the game anymore, as the stats can now go negative, punishing you a bit. * There is now a priority system for working, so you don't have to micromanage pausing and unpausing workplaces anymore. * Nutrition has changed - foods are broken down individually rather than being categorized. So the more variety, the better. However, blueberries don't appear in the list, so they should still be treated as a starter food. * Large water tanks are now a thing. Very useful. * Personal opinion, you probably don't need to micromanage so much unless you're playing at the harder levels. * Not sure why he edited out the second drought? It's really important to know that once you've dammed the river, it will last much longer. It can still dry out, but it takes a few days. That means your land is fertile longer and you can get away with less water tanks. However, since the water stops flowing your water wheels will stop. That said - most of the advice is still good, I still learned a few good tips.

Heck when I saw that I lost one of the beavers, I freaked out and thought that I was doing something wrong. and my pro tip is to build out your roads with intent on how you plan to build out your industry areas (Always place power cables on platforms above roads as often as you can... use "adjuacenet building" layouts to minimize gears and power posts needed, and use different levels to your benefit to arrange things in a way that maximizes efficiency in both cable usage, pathfinding, and producer-storage-distance.

Instead of spending 4x20 logs on storage tanks you could spend 6x20 on dams or a combination of dams and levee if you have the excess science points early for a reduced wood cost. If the goal is to only secure drinking water during drought as cheaply as possible without as much concern for green space you could destroy the block and spend 20 logs on a dam and put your pump there. How far away a beaver can build - so far I've yet to determine a maximum distance which a beaver can build below them. You can be 12 blocks up and still build directly down. You don't have to move the district center for scavengers to reach the metal. Put them at the max distance from the district center. The ruins is still within range of the scavenger flag.

i get not wanting to put production buildings on fertile land, but making a huge snake of gears over the same fertile land kinda defeats the purpose. early production bulding have a 6 squares footprint and if you have more than 6 shafts in order to move your production you are actually losing land trying to save up land. since production isn't ground only i usually start with a water wheel powering a temporary lumber and gear shops and then, when drought becomes longer making water wheels useless i make a production space away from water and finally when i'm late game i terraform a water dump spot (8/9 of them) in order to make enough flow to make waterwheels turn all the time. you can put all the water wheels you want with the 9 beavers dumping water. it's a nice puzzle to solve lategame

I think my mistake is that I go for too many beavers too quickly rather than being better at stopping and starting various jobs. I've given up on several settlements because I just end up with too much food / wood, and I don't want to build more districts. One of my main wishes for the game is that it will notify you if anyone is hungry/thirsty, because I get fixated on one district and forget to check in on the others.
